Dryness, excessive tangling as a result of shrinkage, and other issues can occur when Type 4 hair is characterized by beautiful and densely-packed tight coils (usually related to retaining moisture). NaturallyTemi, a Youtuber, recently released a video titled “7 Reasons Why Your TYPE 4 Hair is NOT Growing” in response to the numerous questions she receives from 4c naturals who believe their hair is not growing or retaining length at the expected rate. Take a look at her detailed response after the break.
Everything You Need To Know About Why Is My 4c Hair Not Growing
1. Detangling your hair with tools too frequently.
Temi mentioned it briefly, but combing through your hair on a regular basis may not be the best way to detangle. You may prefer to avoid using any tools at all, in which case finger detangling will be your best friend. Yes, it will take longer than simply combing through, but you will likely lose less hair and experience less breakage using this method.
I set aside one (sometimes two) days a week to detangle wet hair thoroughly, mostly by finger detangling and, if necessary, by using a very wide tooth comb to detangle from ends to roots. Pay attention to how much hair sheds and how much of that hair is broken when you detangle; this is a good indicator of which method works best for you. More information on finger detangling can be found here.
2. Using the incorrect product combination for your hair.
Of course, this is a personal preference, but whatever products give your hair slip and/or make it easier to pull apart and detangle should be kept on hand. There will always be new products and suggestions to try, but if they don’t work, stick with what works.
Shea Moisture is one of my favorite products. Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey Shine Pomade, Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Leave-In Conditioner, Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Leave-In Conditioner, Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Leave-In Conditioner, Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Leave-In Conditioner, Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strength Don’t forget that water is the most important moisturizer; don’t neglect it.
I believe we’ve all gone through this stage in our natural hair travels, especially Type 4 naturals. You already have to battle with breakage and dryness, so why would you want to make things worse by over-washing your hair? And there’s a grain of truth in it.
Excessive washing of Type 4 hair will most likely result in greater dryness, but a lack of washing and product buildup can also be a problem. A clean scalp is vital in maintaining healthy hair growth, as product buildup can cause hair to cling together and form knots. It’s best to use shampoo or a cleansing product that removes grime and buildup.
On sectioned/twisted hair, I cleanse once every 1 to 2 weeks with Garnier Fructis Curl Nourish Fortifying Shampoo, focusing on the scalp. If you’re having trouble washing your hair without acquiring knots, consider twisting your hair. You choose the time range for washing your hair; you’ll know when it’s time!
4. Not using a deep conditioner or mask as part of your hair care routine.
Deep conditioners/hair masks may appear to be a time-consuming optional step, but they can make a significant impact in keeping moisture, especially during the cold months. In the end, your regular routine will benefit your hair the most, but if your hair appears to be a little more dry than usual, it might simply require an extra kick for more hydration. Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Treatment Masque is my holy grail. It has a thick, heavy consistency and works quickly, leaving your hair soft and manageable in about 10-20 minutes.
5. Using hairstyles that cause your hair to tangle or cause it to be stressed.
Wash and go, that’s what I’m talking about! Any style that makes it more difficult to care for your hair is one you should avoid or save for special occasions. It could be tightly pushed back or slicked down fashions that cause damage to delicate hair.
One of those styles is definitely a wash and go for me, as my hair is usually dry and shrunken afterward. Although rocking shrinkage is cute, it leaves too many knots in my hair for me to detangle later. Of course, many Type 4 naturals swear by wash and gos as well; it all depends on how your hair responds. In the end, if it doesn’t seem to be working for your hair, don’t force it.
6. Drinking insufficient amounts of water.
In addition to being a phenomenal moisturizer and base for hair products, drinking water also does wonders for your hair. This is a rather simple suggestion, but it’s easy to ignore when you’re concentrating on perfecting your hair routine. A healthy body will produce healthy hair, and ensuring the hydration of your hair starts with what you put into your body. Here’s where you can learn more about the importance of water.
