When it comes to taking care of thick curly hair it can be overwhelming and filled with fear.

So many worries of tangles, breakage, and knotting, to the extent that they can completely ruin what started out as a great wash day.

Then you only find out that leaving you discouraged and your hair neglected.

I want you to understand your hair type and how it responds to moisture, manipulation and weather conditions, can cut the time you spend caring for your hair in half and lead to pleasurable wash days with no tears or fears in sight.

Here are 29 easy tips to keep in mind when caring for your thick natural hair:

Keep Your Hair Hydrated

By now you should have found out that moisture is the holy grail when it comes to manipulating thick hair.

When you mix Water with your favorite conditioner and some aloe vera juice you will get a bomb moisturizer for your daily hair moisturizing task.

Go ahead and spritz your hair with the mixture whenever you need to restyle, detangle or create a quick twist.

Your natural hair loves moisture and the thicker your hair is the more moisture it needs to stay hydrated.

Seal In Moisture that moisture!

Castor oil, vegetable glycerine, and flaxseed gel, to name a few, are great for locking moisture into thick hair for long stints of time.

Humectants such as these attract moisture, further promoting hydration and making for easy detangling and styling.

Keep Hair Stretched.

Keeping hair twisted and stretched makes manipulation and styling easier. Hair is less likely to become tangled and therefore less likely to break.

Stretching hair using twists or the pineapple method works well for on the go styling.

Choose Protective Styles.

Low manipulation protective styling works well with thicker hair types. Leaving the hair in one style for a week or two allows the strands to rest and maintains moisture.

This is especially true during the extreme winter and summer months, as hot and cold conditions are more likely to dry hair and cause breakage.

Try Not To Stress.

Thick hair doesn’t have to be stressful, and remember the more you stress the more you put your hair at risk of breakage and thinning. Try using hair products that contain lavender or jasmine before bed, as they are natural stress relieving scents that may help you to relax.

Nix shampoos with sulfates.

It doesn’t matter if you hair is natural or relaxed. Sulfates strip the hair of needed moisture and natural oils.

Pre-poo (pre-shampoo)

your hair with coconut oil or olive oil. Coconut oil helps hair retain its moisture and protein. Both natural oils protect the hair from being stripped (and from excessive swelling of the cuticle) when you shampoo.

Deep condition

your hair with a moisturizing conditioner after every wash.

Get a protein treatment. 

For maintenance, you can do this once a month or more if your hair is breaking.

Trim away split ends as necessary

but don’t get a trim for the sake of trimming. If your goal is to retain length, you’ll only be cutting off perfectly good hair. The less you do to damage your hair, the less you’ll need to trim it.

No microfiber or towel drying.

Contrary to popular belief, microfiber rips the hair out. It acts like velcro to our tresses! Towel drying frizzes the hair. Either air dry or use an old t-shirt.

Refrigerate your leave-in conditioner.

Now I didn’t know this but a cold leave-in will help to seal your hair’s cuticle after washing.

For all my ladies that don’t like cold water rinses, this will be helpful and increase the shine of your hair.

Lubricate your hair with a light natural oil daily.

When it comes to oils, no one wants oily hair so try some lightweight oils like Jojoba. It is light and helps keep the hair tangle free.

Seal your ends with Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

This oil is great for protecting the ends from splitting because it’s so thick and protective, causing the ends to clump together. Seal after every wash and before styling.

Massage your scalp to stimulate your hair follicles 2-3 times a week.

Some believe this encourages hair growth. I have not found it to do so one way or another, but it certainly can’t hurt and it does increase the blood flow to your scalp. So give a scalp massage a try!

MSM is believed to extend the lifespan of your individual hairs while also alleviating dry scalp (less hair shed).

Never sleep on your hair loose.

If you keep sleeping with your hair loose all the time then your hair will be more prone to tangling and breakage. So that brings me to my next point…

Make satin your hair’s best friend.

Sleeping in a satin scarf, bonnet or on a satin pillowcase prevents your hair’s moisture from being robbed. So pick one of choice and use them before bedtime.

Moisturize your hair as needed.

Use your sense of touch to tell. If it feels dry, moisturize. If you are chemically relaxed, you may need to do so 1-2 times daily.

Natural hair may only require moisturizing every couple of days.

Don’t use too many different brands.

When your hair begins responding, you want to know what’s working.

Keep it simple with the products and stick to the ones that work. That will help you not become a product junkie!

Eat a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.

Besides the fact that is so good for your hair, it’s good for your skin too, keeping both soft and pliable.

Try henna. 

People that do henna treatments see their hair health while improved along with amazing strength and shine so you should give henna a try!

Do Clarify your hair monthly.

Hair products build up on the hair and every now and then the hair needs to be thoroughly cleansed.

Especially, if you only co-wash (condition wash). You can either use a clarifying shampoo once a month or add a tablespoon of baking soda to your hair while shampooing.

Apple cider vinegar is another option.

Protective style your hair. 

Wear simple styles that offer little manipulation of your tresses and hide your ends which are the oldest parts of your hair. Buns and up-dos are classic.

Limit heat styling your hair.

Limit heat styling to rare special occasions.

Avoid combing or brushing your dry hair to style.

Now everyone’s hair is different but detangling with your fingers can help you minimize tension and tangles so while styling try to do less for more.

Comb hair from the bottom up!

When your hair is soaking wet and saturated with conditioner, you can comb it with a large tooth comb or Denman brush to detangle.

Always have time when it comes to combing so do it carefully, working from the bottom up.

Never ever tease your hair

I do it and I’m sure you also have done it but try to let your hair be and don’t tease it in order to avoid damage.

Don’t pull hair apart like a wishbone.

Let’s talk about tangles… if your hair is tangled, gently pull it up and apart instead of pulling it apart like would a wishbone.

Use hair accessories with no hanging parts or exposed metal.

Banana clips, Satin Scrunchies, Goodie Flex Barrettes, Ouchless bobby pins & Ouchless elastic bands are the best for styling hair so that it does not get damaged.

Avoid pulling hair tight at the hairline.

You should always keep your hairline loose, so you won’t recede your hairline and damage the follicles permanently.

Check your nails. 

Do you know that hanging nails can damage your hair? So, always make sure your nails are smooth and even before hair styling.
