Why Is My Hair So Dry Even With Conditioner? Here is Why!
Keeping your hair moisturized every single day can be a challenge.
Aside from changing products for each new season, there are other ways to keep your hair fully moisturized and healthy year-round.
So we are answering this question: Why does my hair still feel dry after moisturizing daily?
There can be different reasons as to why your hair remains dry even though you moisturize daily. Here are a few reasons you are experiencing dryness and how to fix it.
Before you begin you need to know your…
Porosity refers to how open your hair cuticles are on your hair shaft.
If your hair cuticles aren’t open enough, moisture can’t get in (low porosity).
Your hair strands feel dry and straw-like if you use too much protein.
If the cuticles are too open, your hair can frizz and tangle easily (high porosity). High porosity often comes from heat or chemical damage.
Here are some ways to evaluate what is causing you to ask the question.. why is my hair so dry even with conditioner?
Are you deep conditioning your hair?
You didn’t specify if you were using a deep conditioner on wash day and that can be a simple fix to a recurring problem.
Deep conditioners fortify your hair with moisture or protein by penetrating the hair shaft.
Many women experiencing dry hair regularly may just be in need of deep conditioning treatment!
It may be time to clarify your hair
Often when you feel your hair is coated, dull, or just not feeling moisturized, it has to do with product buildup that your hair needs to remove.
While you may be washing diligently weekly or whenever needed, if you are not using a clarifying shampoo from time to time, that could be one of the causes of dry hair.
Using a clarifying shampoo will remove all the pollutants, dirt, and products that often get left behind with just a shampoo or cleansing conditioner from your hair.
Many ingredients such as silicones or heavier oils will just sit on the hair, and if not removed, all your efforts of moisturizing will be in vain.
Are you Over-manipulating your hair?
If you’re following all the moisture tips but your hair is still dry, it could just be tired from over-manipulation.
Exposure to the elements and too much of styling can both dry out your hair.
Let your natural hair rest with low manipulation or protective styles before going back to high manipulation styles and see how your hair reacts.
Maybe try a new product
Products for our hair should maintain and add moisture on and between wash days.
Their formulas contain herbal mixes, butters, and oils that not only help with hydration but will also tame frizz and seal in the moisture.
Does your washday need a lil tweaking?
Wash day is crucial to combatting dryness.
Make sure you have fully detangled your hair before or after you cleanse. Cleanse thoroughly will remove all the buildup, then proceed by deep conditioning, and apply your styler.
Take your time to wash your hair and know that if some products are not working, it may be time to try others.
Remember, Butters and Oils Are Not Moisturizers
Exceptions of coconut, jojoba and a few other oils that can penetrate the strand of hair – oils, and butters will sit on the outside of the hair as sealants.
What they do is they just help to hold in the moisture so they dont really bring moisture into your hair!
Try spraying your hair with water first, then you can apply your butter or oil on top to seal in the moisture.
What about the LOC or LCO method?
Something as simple as how you layer your products can be the cause for not giving your hair the required moisture you feel it needs.

Many go for the LOC (liquid+oil+cream) method to moisturize their hair, but there is also the LCO method that many prefer.
Both methods are moisturizing as long as water is applied first.
Go ahead and try both methods to determine which one you prefer and that may offer some help.
Experiment with different protein levels
Moisture and protein need to be balanced, too much protein tends to make your hair feel dry and stiff.
If your hair is stiff, hard, and dry, you probably have too much protein in your daily/weekly regimen.
Elements that dry your hair out!
Natural hair should never keep you away from the beach, a bike ride, or a walk outside with your friends, so go ahead and protect your hair if you’re going out in extreme weather.
Have in mind the wind and cold in the winter, and chlorine and sun in the summer.
Always try and use a hat, scarf, or swim cap to keep your hair moisturized.
You’re Not Feeding The Ends Of Your Hair
The ends of your hair the oldest, driest and most fragile part of your hair.
You have to place your moisturizer directly at the ends of the hair and seal in that moisture with a butter or oil.
Complete this task by tucking them away when you’re done for the added benefit of length retention.
When nothing works… Eliminate Hair Products!
Try and eliminate ALL hair products from your regimen and only use natural ingredients, oils, and DIY treatments for a period of 1-2 months.
Then, reintroduce your old products one by one to find which one was drying out your hair.
