Wash And Go For Short Natural Hair: How To Get It Right This Time!

Before we even check how to get things right it’s vital to know exactly what are we talking about.

What is a wash and go?

What does a wash and go look like?

Since our hair is different in its own way, finding one that works for you takes trial and error with technique, products, and product application.

A benefit about the wash and go on shorter strands is you can do your whole head at once.

No need to part your hair into four sections and work on each one separately, so here is a pretty basic routine you can follow to get a good wash and  go result:

  1. Pre-Poo Prior to washing your hair (optional)
  2. Cleanse – wash your hair with a cleansing conditioner or shampoo, allow the water to completely wet your hair to help remove tangles using my fingers. I like removing tangles prior to adding shampoo but I will also check after as well.
  3. Deep condition – Take care of shower business before rinsing hair well and apply a deep conditioner. You can either stay in the shower for a few minutes as the bottle suggests or if you need a deeper treatment, cover hair with a plastic cap or leave the shower to allow hair to sit under a heat cap for 30 to 45 minutes. I opt for leaving the shower and coming back later to finish. I can be extra, but this is my life.
  4. Moisturize – Rinse out the deep conditioner and apply a leave-in conditioner or a regular botanical conditioner.
  5. Dry – Get out of the shower and wrap your hair in a cotton tee or towel, my favorite is the Hair RePear. Plop your hair to absorb the excess water. Then leave the towel on your hair for about 20 minutes.
  6. Style – Takedown the towel and add a styling product. Either rake it in or smooth it in. I rake and then I am done.

Try this Quick refresh routine

  1. Wet – Start off with soaking wet hair and not just damp hair.
  2. Moisturize – Slather in leave-in conditioner or regular conditioner and follow the steps above.
  3. Seal – Often I will add a few pumps of my favorite elixir, SheaMoisture Reconstructive Finishing Elixir, to the regular conditioner to help with sealing my hair on wash day or on a refreshing day. I also find it helps to keep the curls from frizzing when I use it too but a good botanical conditioner will do the job if it is a moisturizing one.

Things to remember…

The State: Soaking Wet Hair

Styling on super soaking wet hair can feel a little weird but when trying to achieve a wash & go on any type of hair, it’s best to style on wet hair rather than damp.

Why? Your texture is most prominent when wet, so manipulating it during this stage in your routine will help achieve the best results.

The Method: Shingle & Coil Method

It is debated whether or not shingling and coiling the hair to achieve a style can exactly be considered a real “wash-and-go”, but you should do what best works for your tresses and preferences!

Shingling and finger-coiling allows to keep your natural texture while clumping several strands for a more noticeable pattern.

The more you practice the faster styling becomes. Sectioning the hair also helps immensely.

The Gel: Use a Styling Gel

You can use a styling gel and pick a method like the shingle/coil method or simply finger-combing product through each section of hair.

Some styling gels have a lighter hold or more hold, so pay attention to what your hair likes to establish a preference.

If you have low porosity hair, try a lightweight gel; for high porosity, try a heavier gel with more hold.

You can also find a gel with an extra hold that might be more effective especially when trying to enhance or create texture.

The Drying Process: Don’t Disrupt The Drying Process

Do not disrupt your drying process. After styling your wash-and-go, leave your curls to set on their own without manipulation.

If your hair seems to be taking too long to dry, there are a few drying methods to try:

    • Blow-dry with a diffuser
    • Sit under a hooded or bonnet dryer on low to medium heat
    • Air-dry it the natural way (continue on with your day, let the windows down in the car, run errand, etc.)

The preserving options: Pineapple method

If you want to maintain your wash-and-go, learning how to preserve the style at night is a must.

If you want to mess up your style then sleeping on a cotton pillowcase can make it happen.

Invest in a satin or silk pillowcase or do the “pineapple” method with a scarf and repeat nightly. You can even pineapple your curls and coils during the day as a quick up-do style.

Bring it to life: Revive with a Refreshing Spray

If you want to revive your curls after a long night,  try a refreshing spray especially if you live in a dryer climate.

If your climate is humid, you may not need to do much refreshing.

Remove all scarves and bonnets, then spritz your hair in the morning with the spray and fluff as needed.
