If you haven’t know already, low porosity means your hair strands have a tightly bound cuticle layer that lays flat and tends to repel water.

Depending also on your texture, low porosity hair can be shiny and tends to be stubborn with chemical processes.

Your hair can switch to high porosity over time with more mechanical, thermal, and chemical damage, so moderation and trims are important.

Let’s have a look at few characteristics of low porosity hair:

Characteristics of low porosity hair:

  • Your hair pores are closed and moisture does not enter easily / anti to moisture.
  • Hair product remains on the head does not go inside your hair.
  • It does not absorb product, like hair color or moisturizing product.
  • Your hair looks moisturized automatically.
  • Also looks shiny but its very weak.

Quick tips on how to handle with low porosity hair:

  • Use heat to open the cuticles must do the moisture( water, oil, or any type of conditioner) inside the porous.
  •  Get a  dryer for heating your porous while drying your hair.
  • Lighter products like light oils, argon oil, grape seed will work best on your hair type
  • Don’t forget to remove hair build-up.

1. Do not forget your shampoo

Since your hair type is more prone to product buildup. using only cleansing conditioners or co-washing more than shampoo may not be the best regimen for low porosity hair.

Try a clarifying shampoo and incorporate shampoos over co-washing to see if that makes a difference.

Shampoo opens the cuticle for optimal deep conditioning after so do not rely on co-washing.

2. Don’t skip the heat with your conditioners

You should try using heat caps and hooded dryers for deep conditioning.

They are great tools to help certain ingredients adsorb onto the hair shaft and makes your curls,.

3. Don’t use leave-in conditioners too often

Most leave-in conditioners are usually formulated with proteins to help strengthen the hair cuticle, so your hair might become stiff from protein overload.

Try alternating your leave-in conditioner with a lightweight moisturizer for soft curls, coils, and waves between wash days.

4. Don’t use heavy butters and oils

Thick butters and oils are too heavy for low porosity hair, especially for those with fine strands.

Thick products accumulate quickly, causing product buildup up that leads to dryness, especially with multiple applications between wash days.

If you like sealing your hair at the end of your regimen and refreshing your hair through the week, then consider light oils and light refreshers to rejuvenate your curls.

5. Take Steam

Steaming is a great tool for a low porosity natural because it lifts the cuticle layers strand with moisture. You just simply sit under a hair steamer.

Be sure to use a steamer or some type of heat when doing deep treatments, as the heat will help open up the cuticles. And make the deep treatment more effective.

6.Shampoo your hair twice a day:

Commonly nature are taught us to shampoo sparingly or no shampoo at all. But low porosity hair may benefit from lathering twice.

Shampooing your hair twice remove product buildup and improve moisture absorption.

7.Moisturize on damp hair:

It’s best to style on damp hair.  As hair dries, water droplets on and in the hair strand begin to disappear. So it will be beneficial for low porosity hair

8. Avoid to  use humectant:

Avoid humectant like glycerin in the winter. As it will draw moisture out of your hair, but you can use them in the summer in order to bring moisture to your hair.

Sun will make hair more porous, so you want to make sure to cover your head in the sun and in cold.

9.Rinsing:

the most important thing, is With low porosity hair rinsing with warm water after taming, prevents the cuticles from closing so you may be able to follow up with a moisturizer or leave-in that will still be able to go through the hair shaft.

10. Use a pre-poo treatment.

You can use an oil, a mix of oils, a conditioner containing oils, or a butter.

A pre-poo treatment is very beneficial for low porosity hair because it can add softness, slip, and weight (which helps with frizz).

Penetrating oils like coconut, sunflower, olive, avocado, or grapeseed are good choices. Some recommend applying this treatment hours before washing your hair.

But if you don’t have that kind of time (and many of us don’t) you can use a thermal heat cap or steamer for ½ hr and let it work its magic. After the treatment, wash thoroughly.

12.Seal in moisture with an oil.

Low porosity hair usually responds better to the L(liquid/leave-in), C(cream), O(oil) method rather than the famous LOC method.

You should always use your liquid/leave-in first, and your oil last.

After my leave-in, I apply a lightweight moisturizer before I apply my favorite oil mixture.

Some may even want to forgo the cream and apply the oil right after the leave-in.

13. Try bagging or using the GHE (green house effect) method on your hair

These methods are great for bringing back moisture to very dry strands and encouraging growth.

Your hair will be damp after these sessions, so, place my hair in a high puff and rock those natural curls.

14. Make satin your best friend.

Whether you sleep with a satin cap or use a satin pillowcase, satin does not rob your hair of moisture the way cotton does.

For extra good measure, especially during these cold winter months, find yourself a satin lined hat.
