How To Three Strand Twist Natural Hair!

How To Three Strand Twist Natural Hair

When I saw a three-strand twists tutorial, I was a bit confused! It looked like braids, right? But actually it’s not.

It’s a twist with 3 individual pieces of your hair that intertwine around each other; to create one twist.

It looks like two-strand twists but when it comes to technique. Instead of getting small waves, your natural hair is set in more of a spiral curl look.

This technique enhances your natural curl pattern which is a perfect style for those that are natural or are actually transitioning. Remember, you can also add a hair roller at the end to keep your natural hair from unraveling.

If you want a detailed tutorial to know that a regular tutorial doesn’t really do it any justice, watch this tutorial with 3 different color strings.

This style appears to be difficult but if you really think about it, watch some helpful tutorials and keep practicing you will find out that it really isn’t difficult at all.

If you know how to braid or twist, you will catch on relatively fast.  [Quick tip: don’t watch your hands in the mirror, it’ll really confuse you.]

By now you know that our natural hair is not the easy type to manage, so when you come across a technique that gives excellent results when done right, you just have to pay attention.

Here are some of the reasons why you should give tree strand twists a try!

How To Rock Passion Twist Hair Styles Like A Boss!

3 reasons you should try a 3 strand twist out:

  • 1. The twists are tighter – If you have a looser curl pattern or if you just want to wear twists for a while before releasing the hair for the actual twist out, doing it in this manner almost guarantees that you hair will not unravel before it is time for you to separate them.
  • 2. The twist out is more defined – Because of how tight the twists are the twist out will have a ton of texture, so if that is what you are after then the 3 strand twist is the style for you.
  • 3. It’s cute! – Hey! I’m just saying, the style is really cute when done right, we would suggest trying it on both dry and wet hair to see which way gives you the most definition for your hair type.

In terms of making sure the style really turns out great, we would suggest making sure your hair is very moisturized prior to doing your twists. Apply a water-based leave in to your hair and try using butter to seal instead of oil.

Really great butters keep your twists feeling plump and soft especially if you plan to keep them in for a while before doing the twist out. A holding gel is also a good idea to ensure that the style lasts for a good few days.

Here’s my step-by-step guide to 3-Strand Twists:

Detangle Your Natural Hair Thoroughly

You can style in bigger sections with this style but make sure your hair is thoroughly detangled.  You should always keep your hair in a minimum of 4 sections.

This makes my life easier. Then detangle each section in the shower with a wide-tooth comb.  Aside from detangling, You can do the L.O.C method on damp hair, and whatever rinse-out or deep conditioner I’m using at the time.

How To Refresh Mini Twists For Longer Wear

Don’t want frizz? Give A Leave-In A Try for Moisture

When it comes to winter natural hair care, your leave-in conditioner is essential to retaining moisture.  If you can control Frizz then it is an added bonus of your leave-in conditioner.

Besides Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Leave-In Conditioner, You can try Earth’s Nectar Coconut Curls as an alternative.

If you have natural hair that is highly porous, you can do the L.O.C method in the shower and before styling your natural hair.

This is how to get it done: apply water-based leave-in, oil (coconut or olive oil can work) and cream (styling product) from ends to roots.  With this technique, your hair will stay moisturized for longer, be soft and well-defined.

Need some hold? Use a Styling Product!

We all love some pretty and perfect curls so this trick is perfect. If you want well-defined curls, Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Curl Defining Créme (can get it here) should work perfectly for you.

When it comes to this product, a little bit goes a long way. You can apply in sections from ends to root and start each twist with a braid because you don’t want puffy roots.

Each section can be smoothed with a curl defining brush like my Denman Brush.  This brush will help make your twists smoother with well-defined curls at the ends.

Cover and Re-Twist, Don’t forget to Repeat

If you want to maintain your twists, this step is highly recommended.  3-Strand Twists Out will last up to a week or longer with minimal frizz if you cover your hair nightly with a satin scarf and re-twist.

Your hair can become dry but re-twisting at night with a little water and light moisturizer will completely eliminate any dryness.  It also buys you extra time with this style. You can do 3-strand twists, but regular twists are good too.

Additional helpful notes: For better results, sit under a hooded dryer for thirty minutes to 1 hour to help your twists set.

I know many women that are natural are against heat but indirect from a hooded dryer won’t hurt at all so don’t worry about that.

You can style in larger sections but know that this increases your air-drying time. Stay a few minutes under the dryer will save you time and keep you from going out with wet hair.
