Let’s look into the history behind rice water:

There is a tribe called Red Yao in a Chinese village called Huangluo, popularly known as the land of Rapunzels (yeah, you read it right!).

They are called so because, since ages, all the women in this village have been using rice water to wash and nourish their hair. No joke!

It even has a certification from the Guinness Book Of World Records as the ‘world’s longest hair village (You can check it here).

What happened was, the women of the Japanese Imperial Court in 800 AD were known for their beautiful long hair, and that’s because they washed their hair with rice water.

Now that you know a bit more about rice water and how to prepare it, the question is how do you get it done?

Here are a few methods that work well with natural hair. You can try any of these methods and keep what works for you.

Methods Of Preparing Rice Water

Here we have mentioned 3 basics and simple methods to prepare rice water for hair at home and how to use it for hair effectively.

1. How to make Boiled Rice Water 

Let’s answer this question… What Is Boiled Rice Water?

A pretty good and simple way of obtaining rice water is by boiling the rice. Due to the excess water left after cooking rice in water is called boiled rice water. It is a concentrated liquid that you can dilute to use as a face wash or a hair rinse.

II) How To Make Boiled Rice Water

  1. Take a tumbler
  2. fill it with rice (Any rice of your choice but preferably: white, brown, basmati, or jasmine rice).
  3. Fill it with more water than you usually use to cook.
  4. Boil the rice for some time. (You can either take the excess water that comes on to the top layer or wait till the rice is cooked and then strain the excess water in the tumbler)
  5. This water will be a highly concentrated cloudy liquid.

How To Use Boiled Rice Water For Hair

Boiled rice water is also an excellent conditioner, here is how you can use it:

  1. Take a cup of boiled rice water
  2. add a few drops of rosemary or lavender oil into it.
  3. Shampoo your hair
  4. then pour the rice water over it.
  5. Leave it on your hair for 5 to 20 minutes (depending on the time you have.)
  6. Gently massage your hair and scalp while in the wait.
  7. Rinse your hair thoroughly with regular water

How often can this be done? use it at least one time a week to see improvement in the health  & texture of your hair.

Who to make Fermented Rice Water?

Let’s answer your simple question… What Is Fermented Rice Water?

Fermented rice water is rice water that is left to ferment for a while before use. Fermentation turns the rice water into a potent liquid that needs to be diluted before use.

 How To Make Fermented Rice Water? 

  1. Take half a cup of rice and soak it in two cups of water. (Keep it aside for 15 to 30 minutes.)
  2. Extract the water by straining the rice.
  3. Transfer the liquid you obtain to a jar
  4. leave it there for a day or two at room temperature.
  5. When you notice a sour smell emanating from the jar, stop the fermentation and shift the jar to the fridge (I just leave it for 24 hours.. don’t necessary smell it all the time).
  6. Add a cup or two of warm water before you use the fermented rice water (why? it is highly potent and direct use is not recommended.)

Next, How To Use Fermented Rice Water For Hair?

In simple English here is a simple way of using fermented rice water for your hair:

  1. Prepare your fermented rice water.
  2. Add some olive oil or any essential oils to cover up the smell.
  3. Apply it into your hair using a spray bottle (much easier) or you can do the following method
  4. Rince your hair with the fermented rice water, leave it on for 20 minutes and then wash it off with a mild shampoo (preferably sulfate free shampoo).

I haven’t come accross any side effects of rice water rinses but I know it’s similar to protein treatmens so if you’re protein sensative you should be extra careful when using it!

INGREDIENTS

  • Approx. ½ Cup Rice
  • 2-3 Cups Distilled or Plain Water
  • Strainer
  • Saucepan
  • Large Pyrex Cup
  • Applicator or Spray Bottle

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Clean the rice in water until the water is clear. Discard water.
  2. Place water and rice in a saucepan and let it come to a boil.
  3. Remove the saucepan from heat and strain rice water into Pyrex cup.
  4. Pour the rinse into an applicator bottle after cooling or proceed with fermenting instructions.

FERMENTING INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Leave the rice water to sit in a warm room for 12-24 hours. A sour smell will form as the water ferments.
  2. Pour the water into a saucepan and re-boil.
  3. Pour it back into the Pyrex cup and let it cool slightly.
  4. Pour the rice water into an applicator or spray bottle for use.

If you’d prefer to use a no-boil method, the sequence is almost the same.

Place the rice and water in a container and swirl it with a spoon instead of letting it boil. Let it sit for 30-45 minutes, and then it will be ready to strain and use. Or, consider fermenting from this point to make a more potent recipe.

Add in few drops of lavender essential oil and stir. Pour the mixture in a bottle and use it as a shampoo once or twice a week. Store your prepared shampoo in the fridge for about 1 week.

  1. Wow there is a ton a great information in here. I didn’t know you could use rice water as a skin treatment. This is awesome!

    For hair growth though, I’m assuming the rice water is applied once per week but for how long? I’ve read it’s dangerous to do it more than 4-6 weeks. Any recommendations?

    1. Thanks for your comment Lesha! Yeah too much of everything is not good. I would recommend doing it for a few weeks like two or so and taking a break before starting. See how your hair responds and the next time increase the duration and always check how your hair responds.
