Before we get into how to get it done right I will try to break down what exactly is a oil rince.

What is Oil Rinse?

Often an oil rinse has been compared to a hot oil treatment done in the shower after shampooing and before conditioning your hair.

Oil rinsing is a technique women use to lock moisture in their hair while in the process of washing and conditioning.

If you have studied different methods, it is very similar to the LOC method, only that it is only done in the shower. It is most of the time done with one of three oils—olive, coconut or avocado—because they penetrate the hair shaft.

What Does Oil Rinse Do?

As I mentioned before, Oil rise is often compared with the  LOC Method which happens to be one of the best ways to moisturize even the driest of hair

But did you know the oil you use and in what order, in which you use it, really makes a difference.

Penetrative oils have the molecular structure that allows them to enter your hair.  Since penetrating oils can enter the hair shaft they can also bind to water inside the hair.  There are only 3 oils that have been proven to absorb or penetrate into your natural hair. These oils are coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil.

You can mix all three together, just two or use them separately.

Applying one of these three oils can help your hair hold on to water. It’s guaranteed to leave your hair soft and moisturize, without a weighed down feel.

    • You increase moisture retention because you are rinsing your hair with ample oil that penetrates the hair shaft to lock in water, leaving your hair more moisturized.
    • Oil rinsing is a great way to add more shine to your hair. Some do it, just to get rid of lackluster hair and increase shine.
    • You will have less single strand knots because oil rinsing combats dry ends, which prohibits single strand knots from forming.
    • moisture retention
    • easier detangling
    • less single strand knots
    • eliminates frizz
    • leaves hair smoother & softer
    • natural shine

There are many different ways that you can oil rinse your hair, but don’t be intimidated by this technique. The method that works for me is an easy introduction into the world of oil rinsing. And it’s easier than you might think.

Do you have dry hair?

Being that natural hair can be extremely dry, I like to do an oil rinse more often than not. For me, the best technique for doing this is after shampooing and during my conditioning process, instead of before my conditioning process like many do. In other words, I like to mix my oil of choice (i.e. olive oil) in with my conditioner.

I have tried the latter technique, shampoo, oil, and then conditioner. I have also tried shampoo, conditioner, and then rinse, but my hair often feels too heavy. By mixing my conditioner and the oil, I get extra moisture without the heaviness.

What are some great oils for Oil Rinses?

When it comes to choosing the right oils for oil rinsing natural hair, you want to look for oils that penetrate your hair shaft. So steer clear from oils like castor oil that coat the hair, but feel free to use them after to help lock in moisture.

Natural hair oils like coconut oil, avocado oil, and jojoba oil are all great options for oil rinsing as they all work their way into the hair shaft. If you want to increase the penetration, opt for heating up the oil until it’s warm before adding to your hair. Alternatively, you can use a heating cap for a few minutes, then rinse out the oil afterward.

Simple Ways Add Oil Rinsing Into Your Regimen

Oil rinsing is the last step of your hair wash routine. After shampooing, conditioning or co-washing your hair, be sure to rinse your hair thoroughly before adding any oil to your hair. To carry out the process, you simply have to pour or smooth the oil onto your hair, allow it to sit for a few minutes and then rinse out with water only.

On another note, if you want to remove some of the weight, you can shampoo instead. However, shampooing can remove a lot more oil than expected, so it’s recommended that you go easy on the oil application to avoid the weighed-down feeling.

Oil Rinse Directions

After shampooing, you apply a liberal amount of hair penetrating oils like olive, avocado, or coconut oil, followed by conditioner. Let it sit for about 3 – 5 minutes and rinse with cool water.  Repeat as frequently as needed.

Try a Conditioner oil mix

After shampooing, I condition as I regularly would, rinse, and then condition with the oil and conditioner mixture. To do an oil rinse, I take a bowl in the shower, add a half-cup of oil and three tablespoons of conditioner, and mix. I like to let this sit in my hair for a little while if I can, so that it penetrates the hair shaft.

Why Does Oil Rinses Work?

For those with low porosity, meaning their hair shaft is tightly bound, which makes it difficult for moisture to penetrate.

That being said, a regular oil rinse adds moisture to your hair strands. It does not feel as moisturized as it would if I added the oil to some conditioner.

Another thing, with a regular oil, rinse the remnants sit on top of my hair, which leaves it feeling coated. Mixing oil and conditioner for my oil rinse allows me to get deeply moisturized result.

Oil rinsing not only adds moisture, it also adds shine and makes detangling much easier for you. I have seen some rave about it and others who were not so impressed, but remember there is always a way to modify almost any hair maintenance technique to make it work for you.
