19 Fantastic Natural Oils for Hair Growth and Thickness!
Although there is little evidence that you can promote new hair growth with essential oils I’ll share with you few oils that are considered essential oils for thicker hair because they condition your hair, soothe the scalp and promote a healthier environment for optimal hair growth which will result in making your hair look thicker and healthier.
But Queen, What are Essential Oils?!
Glad you asked girl, Essential oils are extracted from plants through methods like distillation or evaporation.
Essential oils are most famous for their aromatic capabilities but they also contain strong chemical properties that can be beneficial for your health and why not your hair.
Due to their effectiveness and low risk of side effects, essential oils have been used for ages in alternative medicines.
What are The Benefits of Using Essential Oils?!
One benefit some essential oils have is improving hair health. Different oils can do everything from helping hair grow to adding strength and shine.
Here are some other benefits essential oils have when it comes to your hair:
- Almond oil soothes and moisturizes your scalp.
- Cedarwood oil stimulates your scalp and promotes hair growth.
- Chamomile oil adds shine and softness to your hair while soothing your scalp.
- Clary sage oil promotes hair growth and stimulates your scalp.
- Coconut oil softens your hair and increases the shine.
- Geranium oil strengthens your hair.
- Jojoba oil moisturizes your hair, adds nutrients, and stimulates your scalp.
- Lavender oil deep conditions your hair while keeping it shiny, and can help control dandruff.
- Moroccan argan oil moisturizes, nourishes, and infuse antioxidants to hair.
- Rosemary oil stimulates your hair roots, improves your hair growth, and increases circulation in your scalp.
- Sandalwood oil helps you with dry ends, and adds fragrance to your hair, after all everyone loves good smelling hair!
Now that you know some of the benefits of using natural oils for hair growth and thickness let’s get into 19 of these oils and how you can use them for maximum growth and thickness!
Horsetail extract oil (I found this one that looks pretty good!) helps improve blood circulation to your scalp, which helps promote the ideal environment for hair growth.
It contains silica to help promote stronger hair and nails which makes it a great remedy for split ends and dandruff.
In order to use it for thicker hair, add a few drops of horsetail extract oil to 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil.
Massage gently into hair and scalp for at least 10 minutes.
Did you know that castor oil (this one here has some good reviews!) is good if you’re looking for an essential oil that is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial?
Try adding scalp massage with castor oil to help clear your pores and improve circulation to create a better scalp environment for hair growth.
Castor oil will absorb easily into your skin to clear the scalp of bacteria and irritants. The ricinoleic acid, and omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids in castor oil moisturize hair and scalp to reduce dandruff.
Lavender oil (I like this one plus it has the glass dropper!) can soothe irritation, dryness, itchiness, and dandruff which makes it a good antibacterial essential oil.
It has this relaxing scent that can help reduce stress and tension if you use it daily (girl I think I need it, lol).
Did you know that extreme stress has been known to cause hair loss? wow, be careful sis!
Like other essential oils for thicker hair, a scalp massage with lavender helps activate the scalp that will result in a better blood circulation, which leads to healthier hair growth.
Peppermint oil (this one is pretty affordable!) is an essential oil known for its benefits to the digestion and muscles, but it also has anti-bacterial properties so you can use it on your hair.
In order to use it, start by applying the peppermint oil to the scalp for a tingling, invigorating sensation that can help boost your scalp blood circulation.
You can also add three drops of this essential oil to your shampoo and your moisturizing conditioner for a rejuvenating boost to your morning hair care routine.
Chamomile essential oil ( this one i found looks small but it should do the trick) soothes and conditions your scalp, helping to prevent dandruff, brittle and dry hair.
Some people have a love-hate relationship with coconut oil but it’s a soothing, super-moisturizing essential oil that contains ingredients to help protect, nourish and moisturize your hair (it is also anti-fungal and antibacterial)!
Coconut oil (like this one here will work!) contains lauric fatty acid that protects your hair roots and helps prevent breakage.
When you apply it to the outside of your hair strands, the vitamin E, vitamin K and iron in the coconut oil will moisturize and improve your hair shine.
In case you are looking for an oil that absorbs easily into the hair shaft, give coconut oil a try! Plus it is an ideal ingredient that can be added into your deep conditioner.
It also helps to protect against damage from the environment and heat styling although I don’t recommend it as a solid heat protectant everyone has their preference.
Coconut oil protects the scalp against dryness, dandruff and even lice.
Rosemary oil (this one is a good option to try) invigorates the scalp. The oil may also help you maintain your natural hair color and preventing graying, plus it reduces dry scalp and hair.
To apply and mix rosemary essential oil for thicker hair, try adding a few drops to extra virgin olive oil into the scalp and hair.
8. Organic Lavender oil
Lavender oil can speed up your hair growth because it has properties that can generate the growth of cells and reduce stress ( this info was made know by researchers on one animal study).
They found that this oil was able to generate faster hair growth in mice and also has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, which can improve your scalp health.
You can again mix several drops of lavender oil into 3 tablespoons of carrier oil (Such as olive oil, melted coconut oil) and apply it directly to your scalp.
Leave it in for at least 10 minutes before washing it out and shampooing as you normally would.

Cedarwood essential oil (I found it here in a good price!) is known to promote hair growth and reduce hair loss by balancing the oil-producing glands in your scalp.
It also has antifungal and antibacterial properties which can help with dandruff and hair loss issues.
Mix a few drops of cedarwood essential oil with 2 tablespoons of carrier oil of your choice (Again I would go for olive oil).
Massage it into your scalp and leave it on for 10 minutes before washing it out.
You might find it hard to find it in your local grocery stores, but you might be able to purchase it from smaller health food stores or find it online from here.
10. Lemongrass oil
If you’ve been having issues with dandruff, Lemongrass oil is an effective dandruff treatment due to this study: with one 2015 study finding that it significantly reduced dandruff after one week.
If you want to see results, lemongrass oil for dandruff is most effective when used daily. So, mix a few drops into your shampoo or conditioner daily, and make sure it’s massaged into your scalp.
11. Thyme oil
Thyme is particularly strong, even among essential oils, didn’t expect to find that Thyme could be used to promote hair growth!
Thyme can help promote hair growth by both stimulating the scalp and actively preventing hair loss.
Just like cedarwood oil, thyme oil was also found to be helpful in treating alopecia areata.
Put only 2 small drops in 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil before applying it to your scalp. Leave it on for about 10 minutes and wash it out.
12. Clary sage oil
Clary sage oil contains the same linalyl acetate that helps make lavender oil effective in increasing your hair growth.
(You can get it from here)!
It can improve your hair strength, in addition to increasing hair growth, making hair more difficult to break.
To try it, mix 3 drops of clary sage oil with your favorite conditioner, or with 1 tablespoon of carrier oil.
If using it daily, rinse out after 2 minutes. If using it once or twice per week, leave it on for 10 minutes.
13. Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil (get it here) has powerful cleansing, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties. When used topically, it can help unplug hair follicles and increase hair growth.
A mixture containing tea tree oil and minoxidil was more effective than just the minoxidil alone in improving hair growth.
You can mix 10 drops of tea tree oil into your shampoo or conditioner and use it daily, or mix 3 drops with 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil and leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing it out.
14. Ylang-ylang oil
If you have lack of enough oil it will cause your hair to become dry and brittle, there is when ylang-ylang come it, it can improve hair texture and reduce hair breakage.
Go ahead and mix 5 drops of ylang-ylang oil with 2 tablespoons of warm oil.
Massage it into your scalp, and wrap your head with a warm towel. Leave it in for 30 minutes before washing it out.
15. Black Seed Oil
I’ve heard so much about this little miracle oil, Black seed oil (this one here is affordable) is native to the Middle East where it’s used as a treatment for almost every ailment around.
For hair growth, there are many many testimonials of how this oil helped re-grow bald patches and receding hair lines.
It contains high amounts of fatty acids, amino acids, calcium, zinc as well as essential vitamins that are necessary for strong long hair.
Black seed oil is also contains thymoquinone, a strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent that protects the hair follicles and strands from hair loss-contributing free radicals and inflammatory conditions.
You can drink black seed oil and see miracles with stronger, longer and healthier hair!
How? Stir in ½ tsp of pure black seed oil in a tall glass of orange juice and drink up! Be careful as black seed oil can burn the back of your throat and make it feel irritated (Yikes!).
That’s why ½ tsp is enough but if you can handle it, go for 1 full tsp.
16. Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO)
Jamaican black castor oil (love it, this one will work for you!) is a special type of castor oil that is made by roasting castor beans far longer than for the regular castor oil, which produces more ash content, giving the oil a darker color.
It helps restore thinning hair, strengthen weak hair, stimulate hair growth in bald patches as well as reverse alopecia! It’s a very thick oil so a little goes a long way.
One of the best ways to use it is by combining it with coconut oil for a deep penetrating hot oil treatment.
