13 Best Natural Hair Wash And Go Tricks You Didn’T Know!

Many might agree and others might not but wash-and-go hairstyles can be achieved on 4-type hair.

In order to get some more help, here are some tips to achieve and maintain a 5-day wash & go for your natural hair:

Tip #1:Start with Soaking Wet Hair!

I know… Styling on super soaking wet hair can feel a little weird but when trying to achieve a wash & go on any type of hair, it’s best to style on wet hair rather than damp.

Here is why, your texture is most prominent when wet, so manipulating it during this stage in your routine will help achieve the best results.

Tip #2: Give the Shingle & Coil Method a Try

Actually, it is debated whether or not shingling and coiling the hair to achieve a style can exactly be considered a real “wash-and-go”, but you go ahead and do what best works for your hair and preferences!

For many naturals shingling and finger-coiling my hair allows them to keep theirnatural texture while clumping several strands for a more noticeable pattern.

Let’s talk about time, the more you practice the faster styling becomes.  Also, don’t forget that sectioning the hair also helps immensely.

Tip #3: Use a Good Styling Gel

In order to style your wash-and-go, use a styling gel ( dont go for an edge control) whether you’re choosing the shingle/coil method or simply finger-combing product through each section of your natural hair.

Remember that some styling gels have a lighter hold or more hold, so pay attention to what your natural hair likes to establish a preference.

If you have low porosity, try a lightweight gel; for high porosity, try a heavier gel with more hold. 4-type naturalistas tend to find gel with extra hold more effective especially when trying to enhance or create texture.

Tip #4: Let it be and Don’t Disrupt The Drying Process

It is very important that you do not disrupt your drying process! After styling your wash-and-go, leave your curls to set on their own without manipulation.

Here are a few drying methods to try:

    • Blow-dry with a diffuser
    • Sit under a hooded or bonnet dryer on low to medium heat
    • Air-dry it the natural way

Tip #5: Preserve it with the Pineapple Method

In order to maintain your wash-and-go, preserving the style at night is a must. Sleeping on a cotton pillowcase can easily mess up your style and create frizz overnight.

If you have a bad habit of not covering your hair, invest in a satin or silk pillowcase. Otherwise, pull your hair into a “pineapple” with a scarf and repeat nightly.

You can even pineapple your lovely curls and coils during the day as a quick up-do style.

Tip #6: Revive Your Curls with a Refreshing Spray

The next morning you can revive your style with a refreshing spray especially if you live in a dryer climate.

If your climate is humid, you may not need to do very much refreshing. Remove all scarves and bonnets, then spritz your natural hair in the morning with the spray and fluff as needed.

For an all day hydfration go ahead and carry a small bottle of diluted leave-in conditioner or spray in your bag!

Tip #7: Make Sure Your Hair is Clean!

There are so many methods to washing your hair!

I’ve heard about women using water only, washing their hair once a month and those who exclusively co-wash. If popping curls are what you want it is imperative that shampoo is used to cleanse your hair.

Not only is shampoo important, but clarifying shampoo is an absolute necessity for every curl friend’s hair regimen. The shampoo process sets the stage for your end results and if you have eliminated it from your regimen your wash and go is not going to have curls that POP!

Tip #8: Product Overload??

After your conditioner, some of you are layering on 95 million products and you’re pilling them on to every single individual curl.

The more product you use, the longer it takes for your hair to dry and the more money you spend trying to keep these products in your arsenal to make your wash and go happen.

At the very most you only need 1-2 products beyond the cleansing and conditioning process to create a wash and go as opposed to a wash and no.

Tip #9: Switch to a New Product!

Every single product in your collection needs to be re-evaluated, down to your cleanser and conditioner.

Most people are not aware that the cleansing and conditioning process lays the foundation for your styling.

This means that you should be choosing products that are rich in botanicals that give you well-defined and hydrated curls.
