When it comes to type 4A, 4B and 4C one thing you have to know is that they all require moisture treatments and continuous maintenance. Let’s get to know the first hair type:

Type 4A Hair

Type 4A hair is coily or tightly curled hair that can look coarse but is actually very soft and delicate.

It has a clear, well-defined curl pattern (I’ll get into it in a minute), and it tends to look darker than it really is because it has a high density, which means that it’s usually very thick.

Well-Defined Curls with an “S” Pattern

Your type 4A hair is kinky and dry but has a curl pattern that is more clearly defined.

It’s like an “S” shape, which means that type 4A hair texture is not too densely packed.

If you have this type of curl then your can stretches better, leaving more room for styling than the rest of type 4 hair.

How to know if you have Type 4A hair:

  • Your hair easily breaks because it has very few cuticle layers, hence, no natural protection.
  • Your curls are more prone to dryness than other Type 4 hair types.
  • Retains moisture well.
  • You get less shrinkage than other hair types.
  • Wash and go styles will work great on your hair
  • Sulfate-free shampoos and rich, creamy butters will do your hairstyles justice!

Type 4B Hair

Type 4B hair does not have a clearly defined curl pattern, and it’s soft and fluffy.

It has a special pattern shape and I’ll get into it in a minute!

This hair type is also extremely prone to dryness because of the strand shape, the hair’s natural oils may never make it to the ends on this wild ride down the hair shaft.

The 4B Zig-Zag Pattern

This hair type has a less clearly defined curl pattern.

As such, the curl pattern in type 4B hair consists of sharp angles and assumes more of a “Z” shape.

Type 4B hair can range in its texture from fine and wiry to rough and coarse. That’s why this hair type is more susceptible to dryness and causes it to shrink in size.

How to know if you have Type 4B hair:

  • Your hair fluffy like cotton.
  • Your curls aren’t well defined, So you need to do more work to see your curl pattern
  • Even more prone to breakage because of its sharp edges.
  • Needs a lot of moisture and care.
  • Shrinkage is real, it can shrink up to 70% of its length.

Type 4C Hair

Type 4C hair has the tightest, coily-est curl pattern, and because it too can look like cotton, it’s often mistaken for Type 4B. It’s densely packed and can range from soft to very coarse.

How to know if you have Type 4C hair:

  • More tightly coiled that other Type 4 hair textures.
  • Even more susceptible to dryness because it’s so tightly coiled.
  • Tons of moisture is needed.
  • Your hair can shrink up to 75% of its length.
  • Protective styles means less manipulation which is great for your hair type

Tightly Coiled Curls with a Zig-Zag Pattern

In terms of its features, type 4C hair may resemble type 4B hair in a few ways. Its curl pattern has no clear definition either, and it assumes a “Z” shape as well.

Like type 4B hair, type 4C hair can vary a lot in its texture too, from softer to harsher ones.

What makes type 4C hair stand out, though, is its coils being much more densely packed. This distinct feature of type 4C hair makes it prone to extreme dryness and shrinkage. As a result, type 4C hair is the most fragile of all.

When it comes to our type 4 hair  it can often be:

  • Susceptible to breakage Its densely packed kinky texture puts type 4 hair at a disadvantage when it comes to withstanding damage and heat. Every sight of its hair strands that is kinky serves as a potential source of fragility. As a result, type 4 hair can tolerate much less bending and heat styling than other hair types.
  • Prone to dryness Type 4 hair has less natural hair oil than other hair types. It retains less moisture on average as well. Both the natural hair oil production and moisture retention, however, serve as natural protective factors for hair structure. Since type 4 hair lacks in them, it can tolerate less mechanical damage and exposure to heat than other types.

RETAIN MOISTURE. No matter what your type 4 hair looks like you need to be kept moisturized. The kinks and coils of your curls prevent the distribution of sebum (natural oil produced by your scalp) throughout your hair. So make your you learn how to moisturize your natural hair!

SHAMPOO MINDFULLY. Yes, you still need to shampoo regularly to keep your scalp and hair clean- but you can lengthen the time between washes to 2, 3, or even 4 weeks.

DETANGLE. Detangle regularly and gently, using a wide-toothed comb on damp hair (don’t use a brush!) Use conditioners to add slip and help with the process.

DEEP CONDITION. While we recommend most customers deep condition every 2 weeks, 4C hair, in particular, thrives with weekly deep conditioning treatments.

AVOID OVERSTYLING. Styling products dry out your hair, build upon your scalp, weigh down your hair, etc. Touching and styling your hair excessively can also lead to breakage.

General tips for natural hair care

  1. We have said it multiple times, but it bears saying again: moisture is essential for keeping natural hair healthy.
  2. You should cleanse your hair at least once a week and moisturise it with water-based products or even just regular water daily.
  3. Stay away from shampoos that strip away the natural oils from the hair. This means that there should be no sulphate in your hair products, and they need to be pH-balanced.
  4. You should also avoid products that contain mineral oils and petrolatum. While they might give your hair the appearance of being moisturised and healthy, they actually do absolutely nothing to keep the moisture locked in. In addition to that, they have a tendency of building up on the hair, which can only make it dryer.
  5. While water is the most important tool in providing water, it cannot stay in the hair by itself; it needs to be sealed in. For that purpose, you can use creams and shea butter to keep the moisture locked in.

As type 4 hair requires the use of many different products to make it more manageable, you should not forget about the clarifying shampoo that can help remove all the residual product that has been building up in your hair.

One of the things that makes kinky/coily hair look great is detangling, but it might do more harm than good if you do it wrong.

Use some conditioner or oil and detangle your hair with your fingers and a detangling brush/wide-tooth comb.

This can prevent the hair from breaking that would be inevitable if you detangle the hair dry or with a regular comb.

You might be surprised, but the material of your pillowcase is also important for the health of your hair.

If you are not using a silk/satin scarf to protect your hair during the night, you need to have satin pillowcases, as their smoothness can prevent your hair from frizzing.
