Here are some helpful tips that will help you build a natural hair regimen to promote growth and why not happiness!

Shampoo, condition, and detangle your hair

Oh yes, When we use shampoo, the focus should be on our scalps, since that’s where the dirt sits.

So, apply some shampoo to your roots and scalp, scrub with the fingertips, and the lather will make its way down your hair.

Let’s talk about Moisturizing shampoos

Go ahead and use a moisturizing shampoo (once or twice a week) that don’t have ammonium or sodium lauryl sulfates, by that way it will not leave your hair feeling tangled, stripped, or squeaky clean.

What about Clarifying shampoo’s?

If you are a swimmer or have hard water at home, you should utilize chelating shampoos.

You can use it once a month or twice if you use hair grease and other heavy oils on your hair quite often.

This type of shampoo will strip your hair of the product build-ups!

After clarifying, your hair will feel squeaky clean.

If you use a lot of oils and styling gels, you will need to consider using a clarifying shampoo every once in awhile to occasionally remove this product build-up.

Deep condition and strengthen your hair.

You’ve gone ahead and washed your hair, conditioned and then what next? After rinsing out the conditioner, proceed with a deep condition to ensure every one of your curls becomes supple enough for future styling.

Steaming your hair while deep conditioning is a great idea.

Why? When you steam your hair, you’re causing the cuticle layers to lift up and allow the deep conditioner’s ingredients to penetrate the strand.

Try and steam the hair between 5-15 minutes, depending on the type of steamer you have.

Note: If your hair feels gummy or stretchy after using a moisturizing conditioner, be sure to add a protein based conditioner to your next cleaning session.

Moisturize every hair strand and seal your ends.

You need to be moisturizing every hair strand with a nourishing formula that won’t dry your hair out.

A good thing to do is to be moisturizing your hair once or twice a day before bedtime and in the morning.

Protein-based Treatments and Conditioners

These are primarily used for rebuilding the hair strands, and work best when they are integrated into an already high-moisture hair care routine.

The frequency of using protein-based conditioners and treatments will largely depend on the strength of the product you’re using and the amount of hair damage you’re trying to correct.

If your natural hair feels dry or you notice breakage, then you should hold off on using protein conditioning.

Choose a protein treatment on the mild end of the spectrum for light touch-ups.

Remember, a protein treatment on the mid-to-heavy end of the spectrum is meant for more intense protein conditioning and is ideal for color-treated hair and/or relaxed hair.

Protein re-constructors should be followed by a good moisturizing deep conditioner in order to restore the natural pliability and moisture of the hair.

4. Leave-in Conditioner

A leave-in can be a helpful component of your healthy hair care regimen.

Leave-in conditioners usually help with your hair detangling especially after shampooing and conditioning, and can actually be used as water-based moisturizers for daily use.

Try some Natural Oils

Natural oils are commonly used to seal in the water-based moisturizer products and to help enhance the shine and pliability of hair.

You simply need to first apply a small amount of the oil on the ends of the hair and then work your way up the hair strand.

Some examples include

  • olive oil,
  • neem oil,
  • argan oil,
  • emu oil,
  • coconut oil,
  • jojoba oil,
  • rosemary oil,
  • tea tree oil,
  • safflower oil,
  • lanolin oil,
  • sweet almond oil,
  • vatika oil,
  • carrot oil,
  • amla oil,
  • and castor oil.

Go for Protective Styling

If your goal is to grow long hair or retain your existing length, protective styling is an important part of any natural hair growth regimen.

What is a protective style? A protective style is any style that reduces hair combing or manipulation, keeps the hair up, off the shoulders, and cuts back on the use of heat.

Spiral curls, buns, braids, and twist outs are good examples of popular protective styles.

Sis, Heat Reduction

Reducing the use of heat is another key component when it comes to your healthy hair growth.

Heat is very destructive to the protein bonds in the hair, and even depletes the natural moisture content in the hair.

Using heat styling tools frequently on your hair, even with heat protectants can be disastrous to your hair.

Only hooded dryers offer the safest amount of heat, but they too have hot spots that can damage your hair over time.

So, limit the use of heat on your hair to once a week, or less where possible; especially if you’re just starting out on your healthy hair care routine.

Try some Scalp Stimulating Essential Oils

Essential oils that stimulate the scalp and improve circulation can be applied directly to the scalp using a carrier oil, or added to your shampoo and conditioner.

  • Thyme Oil – an antibacterial oil that supports hair growth, helps with the delivery of nutrients to the scalp and improves circulation. It can also improve hair thickness.
  • Burdock Root Oil – a stimulating oil that helps improve circulation in the scalp, relieve scalp irritation that could clog the scalp, and stimulates the hair follicle. The oil has been used traditionally to reduce shedding and thinning hair, and it commonly used in hair restoration treatments.
  • Rosemary Oil – a powerful oil that is best known for its ability to improve thinning hair, stimulate hair growth, and improve blood circulation.

Vitamins and Supplements can spice things up

Adding vitamins and supplements to your hair care regimen is beneficial for supporting hair growth and fullness.

Vitamins such as Biotin, Iron, MSM, Saw Palmetto, and Vitamin D are all popular for their ability to encourage natural hair growth and help with increasing hair density.

Vitamins are recommended for fortifying and strengthening the hair while promoting growth.
