How To Master Natural Hair Care In Winter Like A Boss!
But that does not mean you have to give in to winter breakage. Here are a few great tips for winter care that everyone can give a try!
Natural hair winter care: Your Hair Moisture is so Important
Too much heat draws out moisture and can cause dryness.
Constant dry, parched strands can lead to breakage and kill your dreams of length retention.
Increasing the frequency of deep conditioning and moisturizing daily can help your hair to stay hydrated during those cold winter days.
You can adopt co-washing into your regimen can also be helpful at keeping dryness at bay.
Increase your deep conditioning sessions to once weekly versus once bi-weekly and cowashing sessions from twice per week to three times per week.
Sealing that moisture is a must!
Using light oils during winter won’t do the trick ( oils such as olive, coconut, grape seed, jojoba, apricot, etc.).
They may not be able to protect your strands from those heaters that take away your hair moisture.
Heavier oils, like castor oil, and heavy butters like shea, mango, murumuru, cupuacu and the like, can provide greater protection.
Increasing your moisturizing frequency is virtually pointless if you neglect to incorporate an effective sealant.
The whole point is to slow down the evaporation of the moisture from your hair.
Heat makes water evaporate at a faster rate, therefore, you want to protect your tresses and seal in as much moisture as possible.
Hait Tools minimized (If you can!)
Adding blow dryers, flat irons, even hood dryers turns moisture retention into more of a chore in the winter months.
Air drying is just as effective for drying your hair, but it takes longer, it won’t deplete your hair’s moisture as fast as heat tools.
Natural hair winter styles: Protect, Protect.. did I say… Protect?
If you are not able to co-wash or deep condition your hair frequently but being in a protective style helps (Keeping your hair moisturized also)!
A simple moisturizing spritz mixed with oils can offer great hydration and protection when used daily.
Protective styling is also great for length retention. Putting your hair up will help you keep from playing in it.
Length retention by keeping your hair moisturized and putting it away sounds like a win-win situation to me.
Wash Day? Use A Milder Shampoo
If you’re not already using sulfate-free shampoo, then you may want to make the switch during the winter months.
If you’re still having issues with dryness, try adding cleansing co-washes to your hair regimen.
They are milder than sulfate-free shampoos!

Less is More (Wash)

To protect your hair from the drying wash process, pre-poo your hair with your favorite oil and/or conditioner.
You can try a coconut oil pre-poo. It is the best and prevents damage during your shampoo session.
A Good Deep Conditioner Goes a Long Way
Don’t deep condition your hair using a regular conditioner. When searching for a deep conditioner, look for words such as “treatment” or “masque”. Deep conditioning your hair is a big deal!

You don’t need to deep condition overnight or an all-day, 20-30 minutes with heat will be more than enough.

Steaming Your Hair Can help
This is Important, did you know that the key to moisture is water?
During winter months, the dry, winter air can leave your hair strands thirsty and dry. You can avoid that by saturating your hair on a regular basis, try steaming your hair.
Don’t sit under the dryer if you don’t have time. You can simply steam your hair while taking your shower just skip that shower cap. Or, you can use a handheld steamer, like the QRedew.
Hats are cool too! (With Silk Lining Or Silk Cap)
Wearing a hat is a great way to protect your hair from the cold winter. Just make sure that you either line with silk or wear a silk cap when wearing wool or cotton hats.
Don’t skip your Trims!
Make sure that your ends are healthy by trimming away any split ends to help during the dry, winter air that can result in dry, brittle hair. (Trims also give a fresh feeling to your hair!)
Don’t forget to Seal Your Ends too!
Trims are great, so after you’ve trimmed your ends, seal your ends to reduce splitting and breakage.
Protect Your Ends
Remember to tuck your ends away when using protective styles. Styles like Buns and updos are great in the wintertime.
If you braid or twist your hair, try and tuck your ends away for ultimate protection.
Massage Your Scalp With Oil
