I won’t go through it all but I will share with you some important things you need to have in mind when it comes to your natural hair!
How To Master Natural Hair Care For Beginners!
Before we all begin its good to know what your hair type is
Our natural hair has various curl patterns (3C, 4A, etc.), textures, density, porosity and elasticity and so on. Let’s get into each one of them so you can better understand your hair!
What is a Curl Pattern?
This is #1 in my natural hair care for beginners list!
The is the most common system used to describe curl pattern. Essentially, most Black women have curly (3) or kinky (4) hair. The A, B and C refer to the diameter of the curl. (Although some women refer to their hair has “G” or “Z” hair.

Let’s talk Texture
Hair Texture refers to the thickness or diameter of the hair strand. Your hair can be fine, medium (normal) , or thick (coarse).
Fine hair is delicate –with less protein structure — and doesn’t hold curls well.
It is more prone to breakage, especially if it is also prone to dryness.
Medium (normal) has more protein structure than fine hair, but it is more pliable than coarse hair.
Coarse hair is a thicker hair strand, holds curls well, but it is less pliable than fine or medium hair.
Let’s talk Density
Density has to do with the number of strands on your head. If you have low-density hair you are more likely to have issues with scalpy twists.
High density means you have a lot of hair strands.
Let’s talk Porosity
Porosity refers to how hair strands retain moisture.
If you have issues moisturizing your hair then you need to know your porosity level. Low porosity hair is difficult to get moisture into the hair.
Normal (Medium) porosity hair is pretty easy to get moisture into the hair and retain that moisture.
High porosity hair has a very difficult time retaining moisture because water enters and leaves the shaft easily.
How to do the Porosity Test
- Fill a glass or bowl with room temperature water.
- Take a couple of strands of your clean hair and put them in the water. (Make sure your hair is clean because if you have oils or products on your hair, it will alter your results.
- Watch it for 2-4 minutes.
- If your hair sinks immediately, it has high porosity. Your hair absorbed the water quickly and sank quickly.
- If your hair is still floating 4 minutes later, it has low porosity. I have low porosity hair (see my float test pic below).
- If your hair is slowly sinking, you have normal porosity.
Elasticity refers to the “stretchiness” of your hair, which is how much you hair will stretch and then return to its normal state.
If your hair is healthy, when wet, it should stretch 50% or more and return to its normal state.
Hair that is not elastic is more prone to breakage and it is also harder to curl with rollers or heat styling tools.
To test for elasticity, pull strands from at least four areas of your head. Determine how much it springs break, how quickly it springs break, and whether your hair breaks.
Now that you know your basic hair details I believe you need to know how to stretch your natural hair.
I find that my hair acts better when it’s stretched rather than when it’s in its shrunk state.
How to Stretch Your Natural Hair
Here are some great options when it comes to stretching your hair while you prepare it for an awesome style!
Try the Banding Method
The Banding method is you using ponytail holders to gently stretch your wet natural hair. Be sure to use ouch-less elastics made without the metal piece that can snag your strands.
Another thing is you need to be careful with this one because it can lead to breakage and thinning edges if you use too much tension.
Here is how it’s done:
This is similar to the first option but you use tread and wrap it around sections of your hair.

This is just you blow-drying your natural hair in order to stretch your hair.
Then you maintain the stretched look till your next wash. You need to be extra careful with this method because it involves heat so use it in moderation.
Twist and Braids
I love braiding my hair in order to stretch it. In fact I’m in braids while writing this right now!
Braids create a little more stretch or tension than twist in my opinion but they both elongate your natural hair which is better than keeping it shrunk.
This is a pretty basic way to stretch your natural hair although I haven’t been using this method since I went natural. Many naturals prefer this method so you need to try it before you conclude.
This method is done when you take a section of hair and wind it in one direction. Take the wound section and continuously wrap it around and around, forming the knot. this way your hair dries in that state and before you take it out it surely must have stretched your curls.
Now that you know the basics of stretching your hair another thing I would love to show you is how to keep your hair moisturized.
Your hair needs to stay moisturized in order for it to not break, here are some great moisturizers that you could try (Don’t forget to always seal the moisture with an oil).
Great Natural Moisturizers for Your Natural Hair
Water is the best moisturizer you could use.
Water must be present in your daily hair routine and diet in order for you to have and retain moisture.
That means you need to apply it on your hair and also drink enough water!
You can also use water-based products to help you combat frizzy dry hair.
Humectants naturally draw moisture from the environment into the hair. One of the most common is glycerin.
Check that humectants are present in the first 5 ingredients of the hair products you’re about to apply on your hair.
Aloe Vera (You can use the juice or gel) is a natural moisturizer and pH balancer for hair. Aloe vera contains something called proteolytic enzymes which repairs dead skin cells on the scalp. It also acts as a great conditioner and leaves your hair all smooth and shiny.
Now that you know how to moisturize your hair lets get into the basic styles you can do that will help you grow your natural hair. I say go for protective styles!

Why should you do protective styles often? Here are some great benefits of implementing protective styles into your hairstyles:
You need to give your hair time to repair so doing a protective style ensure that you are preventing breakage while your hair is being repaired for constant manipulation.

When you’re practicing a low manipulation regimen it is very important to still clean, condition and moisturize your hair while allowing it to improve in health!

How to Grow Your Natural Hair
I know that’s the dream of every lady, to grow her natural hair so here are some pretty basic tips for beginners that will help you reach your natural hair goal!
Shampoo, Co-Wash, and Rinse As Needed
A clean scalp promotes healthy hair growth by removing build-up, dead skin, and other unwanted dirt.
Cleansing more frequently than once a week or twice a week is perfectly ok if you’re using a gentle sulfate-free cleanser or cowashing your hair.
Pay Attention To Those Ends
Check your ends and see if you need to trim those split damaged ends ( to avoid too much trimming always moisturize and seal your ends!).
Low manipulation or protective styles like twists or braids, protects your hair from manual breakage and moisture loss so give your hair some break and try any of these cute protective styles for hair growth.
Work In Sections
To make it easier for you and especially if you have thick hair you should be working in 4-6 sections, from shampooing to conditioning to moisturizing to detangling.
Never Skip the Leave-In Conditioner
Your leave-in conditioner helps you add additional moisture into your hair. I wasn’t using a specific one when I first went natural but once I added it into my hair regimen I saw a huge difference!
Take A Multivitamin
A simple multivitamin and well-balanced diet is all you need for healthy hair. Taking a multivitamin can give back to your hair what you’re not giving it through your diet.
If you are on other medications ask your doctor before you take any multivitamin.
Drink More Water for Hydrated Hair
Moisturize and nourish your hair and skin from the inside out by drinking water will be of great benefit to you.
You will notice a huge difference in both my hair and skin when you drink more water daily.
