How To Rock Mini Twists On Natural Hair
Oh yeah, protective styles can be worn any time of the year, but during the summer months is when the curly hair community really gets creative. While I am not a huge fan of styles that involve hair extensions for several reasons — unless they are installed the correct way — I love to mini-twist my own hair.
Mini-twists give you the same benefits you would get from any other protective style — you can simply put your hair away without constantly worrying about it. I also love that they can be worn on almost any length of hair and still look stylish no matter which way you wear them.
Pros of doing Mini Twists
Great for a fuller look
Mini twists are a great option for those of us with little density because they create the illusion of voluminous hair. Why? This is due to the smaller twists resembling loose hair and the fact that even though your twists stretch your hair there is still some shrinkage with them.
As we all know, for most of us, our loose hair can showcase super volume but can also mean more upkeep. With mini twists, you can get the volume and low manipulation all in one.
Requires Less time to install
For most of us, mini twists can take a shorter amount of time to install than mini braids. I said most of us because there are some women that have stated that mini braids actually take them a SHORTER amount of time to install than mini twists.
Most women state that it takes them between 1-3 hours to install mini twists (this, of course, depends on the size of your twists and or the density and length of your hair). I know some of y’all may be saying “This isn’t a short period of time!” but compared to the 4-12 hours that it can take to install mini braids, these can be a heaven-sent.
They are easy to remove
Compared to the removal of mini braids, mini twists can take little to no time to remove. This removal time can last between 30 mins-2 hours. We would suggest using some oil to coat your fingers and removing your twists being as generous as you would like to be cause the oil can act as a great pre poo.
Mini Twists Provides plenty of styling versatility
One great thing about mini twists is the number of hairstyles you can do with them. Besides wearing them with a side part or pulled back, you can also do many hairstyles that you would do with your loose hair such as halo braids, updos, and even Bantu knot and perm rod curls.
Cons of Doing Mini Twists
They can tangle easily depending on how often they are washed
Depending on who we are as individuals, the number of times that we wash our hair can range from daily to once a month. With mini twists, it is a must that you cut down on washing if you are a frequent washer.
For example, if you want to stretch your twists for 2 weeks then washing once during this time frame the maximum amount of times that you can wash your hair if you want to prevent extreme tangling.
Most of they time, they lasts for a shorter period of time
Even without frequent washing, the tangling of mini twists can still occur. This can be due to their ability to shrink more and the minimal amount of tautness that mini twists (or all twists for that matter) have.
With that said, its usually not a good idea to wear twists past the 4-week mark if you do not want to deal with tangles. For the ladies that are looking for a 6-week low manipulation/ protective style then mini twists may not be for you.
Mini Twists will show the length of your hair a lot less than mini braids
I know that many of us natural ladies at times love to show off our length. Unfortunately, while your hair would have more stretch than it would with a wash n go, I wouldn’t necessarily say that mini twists would be a top choice for showing length especially if you are trying to show your length without heat.
Frizz can occur
I may be in the minority here, but I adore my frizz. However, I know that many women may not. With mini twists, frizz can arrive much sooner than one would want.
This is even worse if you are a daily spritzer, so if you like frizz-free hairstyles, this may not be the hairstyle for you.
What to Watch Out when it comes to installing Mini Twists?
Here are some key things to keep in mind when creating your simple mini-twists routine:
- Although you will want your mini-twists to last, avoid installing them too tightly; your scalp and hair will thank you later.
- You may want to consider installing your twists in four sections. By dividing up your work, you’re less likely to lose your mind when it seems like the installation process is taking forever.
- Be sure to deep condition your hair beforehand. You will most likely keep your twists in for weeks at a time, so you will want to give your natural hair some love.
The Quick Mini Twist Guide
- Start off by grabbing a section, maybe about a 1-2 inch section of hair.
- Pin the rest of your up and out of the way.
- Within that small section, using your fingers grab a small amount of hair to twist.
- Apply the shea butter/coconut oil mix to those strands and once you’ve applied it, start your twist. Get as close to the roots as possible. When you get to the end, you can twirl it with your fingers – they don’t unravel.
- Keep doing this until you’re done, and that’s it!
These twists took me 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete. I’m very happy with the end result and plan on keeping these in for 2 weeks, at least. To preserve the style at night, I just sleep with a satin bonnet. Low-maintenance, protective style. If you have additional questions, feel free to ask!
How to keep your mini-twists looking fresh?
Just because you don’t have to style your hair each day doesn’t mean you should neglect your curls. Spray a light leave in-conditioner or moisturizer at least a few times a week.
One of the main ways you can keep your twists looking fresh is to tie them down with a scarf at night.
Keep track of how long your twists have been installed – you don’t want to keep them in too long where they begin to loc (unless that’s your goal). I recommend no more than a month, then follow up with a deep conditioner.
