So we are gonna dive into some pretty simple low porosity hair routine ideas for absolutely beautiful curls and kinks!

Let’s start with the basics of caring for low porosity hair!

You should always remember that your cuticles are compact so you want to avoid heavy butters or oils that do not absorb into the cuticle.

Those products will just further dehydrate your hair!

Your low porosity hair routine should consist of water-soluble products to reduce build-up.

Try and apply conditioner to your hair when it is already wet, then work it into the hair in sections, while continuing to add water.

By diluting the conditioner it helps it get more easily absorbed by the cuticle.

Another thing to remember is to stay away from protein heavy treatments and conditioners since protein tends to sit on top of low porosity strands, and can cause them to feel more brittle. Instead, opt for more hydrating and moisturizing treatments.

You can and should do the same with stylers. Apply them in sections with plenty of water, cream based stylers will likely be your best bet.

To finish, use a hooded-dryer or steamer – as these methods utilize heat, which keeps the cuticle open, allowing more hydration to feed into the hair. But the key here is to slow down the drying process as much as possible – the longer your hair is wet, the longer it has the opportunity to absorb more moisture, which in turn, lets your wash and go last longer.

1. Steam your hair: If you are battling low porosity hair your best friend is going to be indirect heat.

You are going to want to steam your hair 1-2xs a week for 10-15 minutes to help open up cuticle of your hair. I find it is best to choose to steam your hair the days you are choosing to cowash or remoisturize your hair so that the process of remoisturizing is easier.

2. Clarify with Bentonite Clay: Shampoo (even the sulfate free kind) can strip/dry your hair and make it harder to moisturize. Your cortex is already laid down compactly shut, so you want to focus on gentle ways of cleansing. Using a bentonite clay mixed with carrier oils as well as ACV would leave a clean refreshed feeling without being stripped. You also want to rinse this mixture out of your hair with warm water to help keep the cuticles open as you proceed with your wash day regimen.

3. Stay away from too much protein: Low porosity hair usually is protein sensitive and does not require too much protein in your hair care routine. This can be tricky as many products do contain protein without necessarily being a protein based treatment. Go for moisture based/ moisture replenishing/balancing products instead of protein products that will have your hair feeling very dry and straw like. This will also lead to damage and breakage.

4. Water Based/ Humectant/ Emolient products: You want to focus on using products that list their first ingredient as water. If the first ingredient isn’t water chances are it is not the best moisturizer for you to be using. Besides that you also want to focus on products that contain humectants like aloe vera gel/juice and emollients like honey. What you should avoid using are products labeled as butters/puddings because they will be too thick and lay on top of the hair instead of being absorbed into your strands.

5. Lighter Oils: Because low porosity hair struggles to allow moisture in, it will also struggle to allow oils to penetrate the shaft. In most cases the oil will sit on top of the strands and weigh it down causing your hair to feel heavy, lifeless ,and look greasy. This will also clog your scalp which will affect the growth and health of your hair. Instead of using the holy grail oils that naturalistas rave about such as coconut oil, avocado oil, and olive oil you’ll want to focus on lighter oils like grapeseed, almond oil, and babassu oil instead.

6. Deep condition with heat: Deep conditioning is truly a must for low porosity hair. It is a crucial way of getting moisture to penetrate the shaft of the hair. However just as I stated with the first step adding indirect heat will help open the cortex and make it easier for moisture to enter. Even if you can not sit under a dryer, you can steam your hair while deep conditioning, use your hand held blow dryer, or count on a little body heat. Also warming up your deep conditioner will help the process as well. When you are done you can rinse with cool water to seal in the moisture that your hair has taken in.

Lower porosity hair requires different care than the hair of medium or high porosity. You need to learn some tips on how to get moisture absorbed into the hair shaft and how to keep your strands healthy and beautiful.

Deep conditioning treatments: Deep conditioning, at least once a month, is crucial for infusing low porosity hair with necessary moisture. To get the most benefit, apply your conditioner to clean, damp hair. Apply mild heat to make deep treatment more effective. The best way to help moisture enter the hair shaft is to incorporate a steamer or with a heated gel cap into your hair care regimen. Using a hair steamer for 15-30 minutes helps loosen up tightly closed cuticles, allowing the conditioning ingredients to penetrate the hair shaft and infuse your strands with moisturizing nutrients. If you don’t have either of those tools, sit under a hooded dryer with a plastic cap on for 10-15 minutes. Wait for about two hours if you are using a plastic cap and your own body heat.

Bentonite clay is a great natural deep cleanser for low porosity hair. It has strong absorptive properties that attract the impurities and remove excess product buildup. A bentonite clay hair mask softens resistant hair, making it more manageable and receptive to styling products.

Wash your low porosity hair with warm instead of cold water to help the cuticle open a bit, allowing moisturizing ingredients from the conditioner to enter the hair shaft. After conditioning, rinse with cool water to close the cuticle and seal the moisture inside the hair.

Use a water-based, leave-in conditioner on damp hair after every shampooing. Liquid-based leave-in conditioner, that contains little to no protein, will infuse your non-porous hair with hydration and lubricate the hair shaft, without coating the hair with too much product.

Protein-filled conditioners: Avoid protein-heavy and creamy, thick conditioners which can weigh down your hair. Use a lightweight or diluted rinse-out conditioner to provide good lubrication.

Protein-enriched styling products: Protein-rich leave-in products may not be beneficial for low porous strands because there are not many tears or gaps in the cuticle layer that need to be filled. Protein particles that bind to the hair can block already tightly closed cuticles preventing moisture from getting in.

Heavy oils: Also avoid using heavy hair oils for styling purposes, as these can’t be absorbed and will sit on the hair’s surface. Use hair oils in smaller doses and choose lightweight moisturizing oils such as jojoba, argan, baobab and sweet almond oils, which can easily penetrate the hair shaft. However, heavier oils work well for hot oil treatments because they can be absorbed when warmed up.

Co-washing: Washing your hair with a cleansing conditioner will lead to build-up over time. If you stick with the co-washing method, you need to regularly cleanse your non-porous hair with a clarifying shampoo.
