The Must-try Loc Method For High Porosity Hair Sistas!
When it comes to high porosity hair is often characterized by the following:
- Extreme dryness
- Easily tangles
- Inability to hold a style
- Lack of shine or sheen
- Sucks up water quickly, but loses it just as quickly
Common Causes of High Porosity Hair
- Your hair was chemical processes or even overprocessing
- Thermal styling, particularly high temperatures and/or frequent use
- Using harsh products on your natural hair
The reason your hair will behave this way is because of your hair’s cuticles, which lay flat when healthy, have been lifted and are no longer in an optimal state.
If your hair is in this condition, getting it back into its healthy shape is going to take while and effort.
How to deal with High Porosity Hair
If your natural hair is already damaged it isn’t going to repair itself, and a cut, or at least major trim, is the best way to go about it.
To deal and treat high porosity you’ll need to drastically minimize your heat usage, and only have chemical treatments applied only in a salon setting.
Make sure you also take a look at the products you use.
Check if you own anything with sulfates that are not a clarifying shampoo, take them away.
Why? Your hair needs ultra-moisturizing cleansers that contain no harsh, drying sulfates.
Protein is Next!
Protein treatments come in different forms according to what you are experiencing.
If you’re experiencing severe breakage due to high porosity damage, you need an emergency product like ApHogee Two-Step Protein Treatment.
You may need to apply an intense treatment like this only once and you must follow all directions carefully to avoid further damage.
If your hair is experiencing less severe damage you can manage it with maintenance protein products like Ouidad’s Curl Quencher Moisturizing Conditioner.
What about your high porosity Moisture?
Our hair type requires a lot of moisture when it’s healthy, so when it’s high porosity, it needs it even more of that.
Learn to get into the habit of weekly deep conditioning, using mild protein treatments that can be applied about once/twice per month.
Your aim here is to manage your damaged hair strands while promoting healthy new growth that doesn’t become high porosity.
Now it’s time for the LOC method to introduce itseld
What is the LOC method for natural hair?
LOC stands for Liquid or Leave-in Conditioner, Oil, and Cream.
This method helps you know what type of products should be applied to your hair and also the order you should layer them to achieve moisture retention.
Each layer you apply locks in the moisture from the previous one.
Using the LOC method for your hair will help prevent water from escaping and will keep your natural hair moisturized longer.
When you use an oil followed by a thicker, heavier cream or butter-based moisturizer, it ensures the moisture remains in the hair shaft.
This method is great for all naturals who struggle to maintain moisturized natural hair.
How to do the LOC method
The LOC method is pretty easy to incorporate in your current natural hair regimen since it involves using products you already have.
What would change is the order in which you apply them to your natural hair.
Here is how to get started using the LOC method on high porosity natural hair
#1 – L (Liquid or Leave-in)
Start it of with the L, which is also known as liquid or leave-in conditioner. This step will add moisture to your hair that will eventually be sealed in.
You can apply a water-based leave-in conditioner as your liquid. Your conditioner should contain water as the first ingredient. You can even use some water in your spray bottle, or even Aloe Vera Juice!
Once you finish adding moisture to your natural hair, it’s time to move on to the next step.
#2 – O (Oil)
Go ahead and choose any oil to lock in the moisture. However, in order to select the best oil, you should know the porosity of your natural hair.
If for example, you have low porosity hair, using lightweight oils such as Grapeseed and Avocado would work best.
If you have high porosity hair you need heavier oils such as Olive and Castor.

#3 – C (Cream)
You can also use plain/natural butter to lock in moisture for this step (Shea, Mango, and Kokum butter work great).
Another thing you can do is use this step to apply a gel.
A gel can provide more definition and hold than creams, however, you must ensure your hair is properly moisturized before applying a gel.
How do I know if I should use the loc method for high porosity hair?
The loc method for high porosity hair will work great for women with high porosity hair or those who struggle with dry, natural hair.
If you don’t know what is your hair porosity, here is a video to help you out:
Your hair’s porosity can play a role in whether the loc method for high porosity hair will work for your hair.
Since high porosity natural hair has cuticles that are wide open and can lose moisture quickly, using this method will maximize moisture retention and help you go days without having to moisturize your curls.
On the other hand, if you have low porosity hair and use the loc method for high porosity hair, there’s a chance your hair may become limp or oily.
Low porosity hair has tightly sealed cuticles and is more prone to product build-up.
Know that everyone’s hair is different and won’t respond the same way to the LOC method.
If you find the LOC method doesn’t work well for you, there is another way you can moisturize your natural hair.
Here are some great oils to try for the LOC method
- Shea butter
- Mango butter
