Let’s look into so helpful facts about the lco method for low porosity hair and all that you need to know about it!
How To Master The LCO Method For Low Porosity Hair
I always like us to break things down so let’s start by learning what exactly is the l.c.o method.
What is the l.c.o method?
If you’re already natural then it might have been that you’ve already tried this method without knowing it!
It’ a pretty simple method of applying certain products in a particular order to achieve a certain moisture result on your hair.
Did that confuse you? I hope not 🙂
In simple words the L.C.O method stands for:
• Liquid (Leave-In conditioner or Water)
That’s all that you need in order to implement the lco method for low porosity hair.
For example, you can use
- water (L)
- Shea Moisture’s Hold & Shine Moisture Mist, Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie (C)
- Nutiva’s Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (O)
as some of the product suggestion for your LOC method technique.
Why is layering products helpful in the lco method for low porosity hair?
By layering products on the hair allows you to control how much moisture is absorbed and how quickly it evaporates.
If you’re wondering if your hair can be styled wet or damp, with heavy or light liquids, creams and oils the answer is yes, it’s possible.
Here is how low porosity hair responds to the LOC method:
- Your hair is saturated with a liquid
- Your low porosity hair will slowly absorb and retain just the moisture it needs
- A cream is then added
- The cream will absorb the water content from the product
- Then your oil is applied
- The two outermost layers will mix and form a thicker barrier to protect the strands.
Take note that depending on how low your hair’s porosity is, this cream and oil mix can leave your hair weighed down and greasy.
Don’t forget that moisturizing your hair on hair that is freshly washed and damp, not soaking wet or dry will give you the best results (plus it won’t take forever to dry, trust me!)

I Love the fact that the Oil that you apply to your hair works as a sealant to close your cuticle and lock in all the moisture which I’m sure your hair needs.
If you have low porosity hair by now you know that it requires more effort to allow moisture into the hair shaft, therefore the lco method for low porosity hair is ideal.
The liquid in the lco method for low porosity hair should always be a watery leave-in conditioner, followed by a Cream which could be a leave-in conditioner.
Why? to further aid the moisturization process.
Can you break down the LCO method for low porosity hair and thick natural hair?
Start by parting your hair into 4 sections and even parted those four sections into another two because of the thickness of your hair.
Proceed by using the 3 products of your choice while detangling and finished off with styling your hair with the style of your choice.
Even tho it’s preferred on freshly washed, almost dried hair, it doesn’t matter if you use this method on previously styled hair, you should still yield the same moisturizing results.
Remember this tip
you can add some more cream after you have already applied the oil if you feel that you need more product for your style.
The oil and cream work together to bind and lock in the moisture that your leave in and water has provided.

It’s no secret that moisturized hair retains length, whilst dry hair breaks easily (yikes!).
To keep your hair moisturized, spritz your hair with water daily, following this step through with a moisturizing product.
Why sealing your hair is important
Sealing hair daily keeps strands lubricated which prevents friction, tangling and unnecessary hair loss.
Because you’ve worked so hard for that moisture, you should keep experiencing it!
Your hair can feel moisturized for up to a week or more depending on the weather or the hairstyle you’re rocking.
You should remember that the lco method for low porosity hair focuses on adding moisture into the hair then sealing it into the hair with oil.
Works well on hair with low porosity because the added moisture from an alkaline product like the Botanical Refresher will lift the tight cuticle layers and allow moisture to penetrate while oil will seal in the moisture.
Use this method if you are 4A-C & Type F-H

When it comes to sealing, you can go by sealing in the moisture with my chosen oil & covering your hair with my satin scarf.
You can go with a heavier oil, but it’s also safer to keep it light with coconut oil or any light oil & a little castor oil on your ends.
If you are close to washing day or using this method during the colder months then you can go ahead and use heavier oils.
The point is to keep the hair moisturized rather than to weigh it down with too many products.
