12 Super Hydrating Ingredients For Soft Natural Hair
Before we dive into these 12 hydrating ingredients it’s important to understand what s hydration.
To hydrate, your hair simply means to add water.
Our hair type is mostly dry so it will need additional water in order to stay hydrated.
That’s why you often hear them say that drink more water to keep your hair hydrated.
But I’ve noticed that you can drink all the water you want and it will have no effect on the hydration of your hair, here is why!
Your hair is made mostly of a protein called keratin which is the same as nails, hooves and feathers.
The process which takes a normal cell and makes it keratinized involves removing all of the water content and everything else that makes it ‘alive’.
So the hair above the scalp is dead and can’t regenerate.
All the products we use improve the condition or look and feel of each strand but for the most part, results are only temporary.
Water content of the hair is primarily based on the humidity of the air around it and will always aim to be in equilibrium. So if you live somewhere with low humidity your hair will be more prone to dryness.
How to Hydrate Natural Hair
There are ways to improve hydration by using humectants which will draw water into the hair shaft.
What is that? A humectant is a chemical that helps to retain or preserve moisture (such as water).
These are commonly used in hair products and are listed in the ingredients like glycerin or xxx-glycol.
Although these ingredients will add moisture to just about any hair type, remember that not all ingredients work the same for all hair types.
Your hair’s porosity level and thickness as well play an important role when choosing hair products.
Now that you have a general idea of what hydration is for your hair let’s get into these amazing hydrating ingredients!
#1 hydrating ingredient: Water
I guess by now you have realized but water goes a long way in restoring hydration to black hair.
If you avoid washing your hair frequently because you believe it’s drying, know that water’s not the problem but probably the sulfates in shampoos.
Hard water could also be an issue because it leaves mineral deposits on your hair, leading to dryness and brittleness.
Though alkaline water isn’t scientifically proven to be any more beneficial than tap water, it’s an alternative to using hard water.
Spritz your hair with water for a moisture boost!
Glycerin is a known ingredient that binds water together which means it’s instrumental in locking in moisture in addition with the other ingredients in your products.
People use glycerin to make soaps like those clear kinds of soap and even lotions ( that’s for the skin and in both soaps and lotions, glycerin helps moisturize your skin).
You might also see “vegetable glycerin” listed on a product label when you check the ingredient of some hair products.
Vegetable glycerin is a less obvious ingredient to look for in products, but it’s super necessary.
As a humectant, it attracts and retains moisture; therefore, it works best in humid climates.
You can add this to water in a spray bottle for instant hydration but don’t overdo it!

For once it’s great for helping your hair grow plus it also helps maintain your hair’s natural sheen and luster by locking in your natural hair’s natural oils.

It’s lightweight and won’t weigh your hair down. You can use it on its own, or mix a few drops into your conditioner or hair mask.
Pure organic coconut oil works wonders! You can use it as a leave-in conditioner or as a hair mask.
Warm a generous amount between your hands, and work it through from scalp to ends.
For deep conditioning, use extra, and leave it in for a couple of hours or overnight—the longer, the better.
Proceed by styling as usual.
Shea butter is a natural carrier of vitamin A and it can be found in almost any hair moisturizer because it physically holds moisture in well.
Shea butter is great for us natural queens because we tend to have thick, dry hair.
Pure shea butter is usually firm, but it melts easily and absorbs into dry hair pretty well.
It should be pale yellow and smooth but they also have the white version; if it’s gritty, white, dark yellow, or green, it’s either too refined or possibly even rotten.
As I mentioned in a previous post, olive oil is perfect for hot oil treatments (You can also mix it with rinse-out conditioners).
It’s packed with nutrition and antioxidants, such as vitamins A and E.
It penetrates easily into your hair and can provide the moisture needed, as well as being a protective defense for your skin.
One thing with Olive oil is that it can feel heavy in your hair so use it sparingly!
This oil is great for cleansing and detoxifying your scalp.
You can use it once or twice a week, but only a little at a time because no one has time for oily hair.
By now you may have heard of the Jamaican Black Castor Oil (also known as JBCO) which is believed to promote thicker hair growth.
This ingredient blocks and traps peroxidated free radicals and also breaks off the chain reactions, which, in spreading the damage induced by free radicals, can lead to the destruction of cell membranes.
So add a few drops of vitamin E into your homemade hair products and your hair will thank you!
Since honey is a natural humectant, it can add a boost of hydration to frizzy hair and smoothens the cuticle, restoring the shine.
You can add it into your homemade deep conditioner, wash it off and style as usual!
The “Tamanu Oil” hydrating ingredient
This oil has terrific antioxidant properties and some benefits as a UV block and you can Dilute it with a little jojoba oil which is more lightweight.
Tamanu oil can actually calm any inflammation that makes oily scalps worse and it’s antibacterial, which can help with flaking and dandruff.
