How to Restore Extremely Dry Natural Hair to Full Health
This is not the kind of issue that will “resolve itself” given enough time.
If your hair is dry and damaged, it means that something you do regularly or something in your body is making it this way.
Therefore, without fixing the cause of the problem the situation is only going to get worse.
Find out what’s making your hair too dry
The first step to solving any kind of problem is to determine what’s causing it. With the dry hair it might be:
- The environment (do you live where it’s hot and dry and spend a lot of time out in the sun?)
- Water damage (how often do you swim in chlorinated pool waters?)
- Treatment damage (have you colored, permed, or straightened your hair recently? Do you do this often?)
- Unsuitable hair care products
- Styling damage
- Thyroid gland disorders
- Anorexia nervosa
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Hormonal imbalances
If there are no “cosmetic” reasons for your hair to be damaged, you should start with visiting a doctor.
Even if all tests turn out negative, it’s best to make sure that your hair issues aren’t a system of some hidden illness.
Upgrade your hair care products
To fix your extremely dry natural hair you need to provide it with consistent top-quality care. This means that every wash should be a treat for your locks.
To achieve this, you’ll need to invest in salon-grade treatment hair care products as they contain higher concentrations of active ingredients, which are essential for the recovery of your locks.
You will also need to read up on the effects of different hair care products’ ingredients. This is a mind-numbingly boring task, but you need to become adept in reading complex names of chemicals on product labels and understanding what exactly they can do for you.
This way, you won’t be fooled by “sulfate-free” and other similar claims that often amount to nothing more than clever marketing tricks.
Never put a product on your hair if you don’t know what it’s made of and what kind of effect it will have. In fact, doing this might have been the reason for your hair damage in the first place.
Embrace the olive oil
Hot oil treatments are very effective for natural hair care and recovery. Therefore, you definitely mustn’t skip them in your beauty routine. However, choosing the oil might be tricky as they have different effects.
Olive oil has some evidence for its efficiency in hair care, so you definitely should start using it first. It’s a great moisturizer, but most importantly, it helps protect your locks from further damage. It’s also rich in antioxidants and nutrients, which help restore your damaged hair.
Other types of oils you could try include Argan, coconut, almond, and castor. Any oil treatment will be more effective if you use heat.
Don’t cut down on washing
“Your hair is dry? Wash it less often!” is common advice on beauty blogs, but in reality, it can be harmful. Poor hygiene can be the cause of many problems, including dandruff and even hair loss.
And if, for example, you swim often, washing off chlorine or saltwater remains from your tresses is a must for keeping them healthy.
Of course, you shouldn’t wash your hair every day for no reason, but there’s no need to cut down your washes too much. Instead, you need to improve the quality of your shampoo and conditioner.
Washing your locks in cool water and being very gentle while doing it will also help. So will increase the quality of your towels.
Remember to never, ever towel-dry your hair or brushing it while it’s still wet. This will physically damage your tresses and result in an unruly mop instead of a head full of beautiful curls.
You also should reduce heat styling after washes and just let your hair air-dry and be natural. As it grows healthier, it will become a gorgeous complement to your natural beauty.
Seeing your locks get healthier, stronger, and more beautiful with every wash will no doubt be a boost to your confidence.
