How To Moisturize Natural Hair At Night For Beginners
Sometimes, particularly during the fall and winter months, my hair needs more than the “usual” to be moisturized.
My hair can still be dry the next morning though I slap on a moisturizer and wear a simple satin bonnet at night. Doing a LOC routine the night before may do nothing to prevent parched strands the following day.
So, sometimes, I have to rely on certain nighttime techniques to transform my hair from dry to moisturized. Here are a few that work for me:
you can avoid all of this with a simple but consistent nightly regimen. Your regimen will depend on your hair’s unique characteristics and the styles you wear on a daily basis, but here are NaturAll Club’s 4 main pointers.
1. Moisturize and seal.
Curly hair dries out easily overnight. Prevent this by moisturizing your hair before bed, either with a spritz of water or a leave-in conditioner. Seal in the moisture with an oil, such as our all-natural Jamaican Black Castor Oil Growth Serum.
2. Depending on your hair length and the style you’re wearing, put your hair in a low-manipulation style overnight.
- If you’re rocking a twist out or braid out, take a moment to re-braid/twist your hair before going to sleep. This will decrease frizz and keep your style looking good when you take out the braids/twists the next morning.
- If you’re wearing a wash n’ go, try a pineapple to protect your curls for the next day. Gather all your hair to the top of your head and secure it with a loose hair tie. This leaves your curls loose on top of your head so they won’t get crushed under your head overnight.
- To preserve a stretched style, tie your hair in loose, chunky twists/braids, buns, or bantu knots under a scarf.
3. Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase
- Silk is a natural fiber used to make cloth, while satin is a weave that can be made from a variety of fiber materials. You can usually tell the difference because silk has a shimmery appearance, while satin is glossy on one side and dull on the back. (Not sure? Check the label!) How much does the difference matter? Depending on the fiber used in a satin fabric, satin will usually be cheaper, but not quite as effective as real silk. Use silk if you can, but for all intents and purposes, they have the same benefits.
- Satin/silk pillowcases are slick and create very little friction. While other fabrics are prone to snag and tug on your hair, silk/satin allows your hair to move and glide around freely. The result: less breakage, and less frizz in the morning!
- Silk/satin also absorb far less moisture from your hair than other fabrics. Sleeping on a satin/silk pillowcase will prevent your hair drying out overnight.
4. Use a satin/silk scarf or bonnet.
Especially if your hair tends to dry out overnight, a scarf or bonnet will protect your hair just like a satin/silk pillowcase, but it has the added benefit of holding your hair in place throughout the night and trapping moisture.
Double or triple up the satin with heavy moisture
Of course, all of this would be in vain without first heavily moisturizing my hair. (You can consider this a modified version of the baggy method, but with satin instead of plastic.)
Seal with hair grease
When a whipped butter or creme no longer seals my strands (which is rare, but it does happen), going back to hair grease can sometimes do the trick.
Personally, I like Softee Indian Hemp because it also contains oils like jojoba, safflower, and rosemary.
I prefer to layer the grease on top of the whipped butter or creme for extra sealing rather than to do a full-on substitution.
Turn on the humidifier
Some of you may have heard about this technique before, but I cannot stress it enough. Running a heater while you sleep may be necessary to stay warm, especially during this time of year, but it can also be drying to the air around you.
Turning on a humidifier overnight will help to replace that dry air with moisture, which will not only be better for your hair but your skin as well.
Wet the hair, seal, and twist or braid
When I say “wet”, I don’t mean a simple spritz with my favorite moisturizer. I mean “wet” the hair so that it is literally damp to the touch.
(It does not have to be dripping wet.) I sometimes do this before bed to replenish my dry strands.
Stopping at this point, though, would be futile so I follow up with oil then twist or braid my hair to help the moisture stay trapped overnight. Also, doubling or tripling up on the satin adds that extra layer of help.
Protect: This step is so crucial and so often forgotten (especially when we’re in a rush or just too tired to get up/move). You have to protect your hair while you sleep. Throw on that trusty bonnet, satin-lined cap, headscarf…etc.
Whatever it is that you use, don’t forget to put it on. You have to do this… because if you’ve taken care of steps 1 and 2 and you skip out on 3…
all of your work was honestly and truly for nothing! I particularly get lazy when I have in a protective style and all of my hair is tucked away. WRONG!
Don’t do this either. By protecting even your protective style you are keeping the style fresher for longer thus increasing the wear of it.
You are also still preventing unnecessary friction to occur to your natural hair as well!
