How To Moisturize 4C Hair With These Super Tips!

4C hair has the tightest curls of all hair patterns, with hairs forming tight s’s, z’s or coils. 4C hair shares many of the other characteristics of type 4 hair, and of course, individuals with 4C hair can have different hair densities and porosities, which changes how your hair behaves. However, these are some of the defining qualities of 4C hair:

  • Hair dries out quickly, or struggles to maintain moisture more than other curl patterns
  • Individuals can experience extreme shrinkage, sometimes up to 75%!
  • Hair is prone to tangles and matting if not properly cared for and regularly detangled
  • Hair is fragile and prone to breakage

5 Excellent Ways to Keep Your Natural Hair Moisturized

  1. Make sure water is the main ingredient in your moisturizer of choice.
  2. Use oil to help seal in that moisture.
  3. Limit your exposure to heat.
  4. Deep Condition.
  5. Sleep with a satin bonnet or pillow.

So how do you address the unique challenges (and enjoy the unique beauty!) that come with 4C hair? The trick is a natural hair regimen that keeps your hair healthy. Here are 7 tips from NaturAll Club.

1. RETAIN MOISTURE. Even if you have low porosity hair, 4C hair needs to be kept moisturized. The kinks and coils of 4C curls prevent the distribution of sebum (natural oil produced by your scalp) throughout your hair. This allows your hair to dry out faster than other curl patterns, so you need to take extra precautions to keep your hair moisturized. Find a good moisturizer AND a good sealant. Oils like coconut oil and olive oil, and creams like Shea butter are effective at sealing moisture in your hair. If you wear a protective style, don’t forget to moisturize regularly!

2. SHAMPOO MINDFULLY. Yes, you still need to shampoo regularly to keep your scalp and hair clean- but you can lengthen the time between washes to 2, 3, or even 4 weeks. Avoid shampoos that contain sulfates and opt for a mild, sulfate-free shampoo. If your hair gets dirty more often, alternate shampoo with cowash or follow shampoo with an apple cider vinegar rinse. Wash your hair in sections to prevent tangles.

3. DETANGLE. This is extra important for 4C girls because the tight curl pattern of your hair can cause hairs to curl and coil around each other, causing tangles. Tangles lead to breakage, which hinders growth. Detangle regularly and gently, using a wide-toothed comb on damp hair (don’t use a brush!) Use conditioners to add slip and help with the process. When you find knots, don’t yank- use your fingers to gently pull hairs out of the knot.

4. DEEP CONDITION. While we recommend most customers deep condition every 2 weeks, 4C hair, in particular, thrives with weekly deep conditioning treatments. This will keep your hair healthy, bouncy, and shiny, and will prevent snagging and tangles.

5. AVOID OVERSTYLING. Styling products dry out your hair, build up on your scalp, weigh down your hair, etc. Touching and styling your hair excessively can also lead to breakage. Explore styles that require less styling products, or alternate between high and low manipulation styles to give your hair a break.

6. STYLE WITH SHRINKAGE IN MIND. Shrinkage can be frustrating because it keeps you from seeing growth, and it can also make your hair more susceptible to tangles and single strand knots. You can explore heat-free styles that stretch your hair, such as twist outs, braid outs, and bantu knots. But don’t forget to embrace and celebrate shrinkage, and have fun with it! 4C hair lends itself to so many styling options.

Suggested 4c styles

  • Two strand twists
  • Twist outs
  • Bantu knots
  • Puff
  • Afro
  • Buns or space buns
  • As with any other hair type, you can use clip-ins, extensions, or crochet braids to switch up your look or add length.

7. LOVE YOUR 4C HAIR. Some people have grown up hearing that 4C hair is unmanageable, unattractive, or otherwise undesirable. These ideas are as far from the truth as it gets! 4C hair is not only beautiful but incredibly versatile, capable of infinite styles and looks. 4C curls are also easily managed and taken care of with the correct regimen and products. Celebrate your hair with pride

All About Your Porosity!

When we talk about porosity in terms of hair, we’re basically referring to your hair’s ability to retain moisture. Porosity is mainly genetic, but many factors can influence your hair’s porosity level. Those element include the environment, climate, stress, products and maintenance. Your porosity level dictates the methods and the products you use to keep your hair healthy.

Low porosity hair characteristics:

      • Hair takes a significant time to dry
      • Is resistant to moisture, because the cuticles are closed
      • Products seem to just sit on your hair
    • Your hair doesn’t have much volume or elasticity even though it may look healthy

High porosity hair characteristics:

      • Hair is often frizzy
      • It may feel dry and dull
      • Quickly absorbs and loses moistures
      • The cuticles get stuck on each other, so it tangles very easy
    • More often than not, it’s over-processed and damaged

Now, you should understand porosity and how it plays a very important role in how to moisture your 4c hair.  Use the test below to find your porosity level.

How to Moisturize 4c Hair Daily With the L.O.C Method

L.O.C. stands for liquid, oil ,cream and refers to the order in which you should apply these products to your hair. The L.O.C. method works best for those of us with high porosity hair. Remember, high porosity hair absorbs moisture very quickly, but the trade-off is, it loses moisture almost just as fast.

Step 1.

Using liquid is the first step of LOC. The liquid can be water or a water-based, leave-in conditioner. Also, this method works best when its applied to hair that has already been cleaned. Grab your spray bottle, if you’re using water, or you favorite leave-in.

You want to work the liquid into your hair, using a generous amount. Section your hair off into four to five sections, and work the product into your hair, starting at the roots and moving to the ends. By doing this, your hair is fully moisturized and easier to manage.

Step 2.

Next you’ll use oil to help lock in that moisture. They key here, is to apply just enough oil, based on you hair’s porosity level.  Usually, this is going to be a thin layer. Your going to work this into your hair the same way you did in the previous. Just be sure not to pull and tug on your hair too hard as you work the product in.

Step 3.

The final step is apply a cream to your hair. In our opinion, a butter based cream, free of mineral oil, dyes and artificial fragrances, works best. Rub the cream between your palms and work it into your hair, starting at the roots. In addition to adding more moisture, this final step should help define your natural curl pattern.

How to Moisturize 4c Hair Daily With the L.C.O Method

L.C.O stands for liquid, cream, oil. The obvious difference between LOC and LCO are the C and the O. Actually, it goes much deeper than just the order, in which you apply the cream and oil. The LCO method is better suited for low porosity hair. The theory here is, since low porosity hair is dry by nature, get as much moisture into your hair, as possible, before sealing with oil.

Step 1.

This step is the same as in the LOC method, so there’s no need to cover it again.

Step 2.

This is where the game changes. For this step you should opt for a water based cream. You want something that will add additional moisture to your hair without weighing it down. Apply the wet cream to you hair, from root to tip.

Step 3.

Now it’s time to seal in all of that moisture. We recommend using an oil that will helps to strengthen hair follicles and promote growth. Tropic Isle Living- Jamaican Black Castor Oil is an excellent choice This time you’ll apply a generous amount of oil. Work from the roots and cover each part of you hair.

In the comment section, below tell us how you moisturize your hair and if your hair is high or low-porosity.
