Start by drinking more water!
In order to know how to soften coarse natural hair, what you take inside will eventually show outside! Water is one of the source of hydration that we often overlook.
Storytimeee: I once downloaded a application to remind me to drink water,….yeah! I found out that the more i drank water the better my hair responded. (High five!)
Drinking purified water will allow your body to hydrate itself and focus on flushing out toxins stored in the body, without having to worry about adding in any additional toxins from the water.
So a good answer to the question “how to make natural hair soft and manageable?” is to try adding some water into your daily schedule or you can even get a cool water bottle that will motivate you to carry it along and drink water!

Detangle your hair when needed
I know, detangling takes forever!
Tell me about it. But look, the good thing with detangling your hair for soft and manageable hair is that it will help you in the long run. I mean how to make natural hair soft and manageable if your curls are all mixed up?!
If you don’t properly detangle your hair you might end up with a head full of matted hair. not cute at all!
and it will take you more time to detangle later on. I try to detangle on wash days. You can choose before or after your hair wash. Just make sure you have plenty of time to do that.
I totally recommend you getting a wide detangling comb! It’s a time and life saver!
I use a pink one that i have and it helps me pass through that rough hair of course coated with a moisturizing conditioner!
Steam your way to softer and manageable hair
I love essence definition: The steam lifts the hair cuticle allowing your treatments to penetrate deeply into the hair shaft helping to heal damaged hair.
How to soften coarse natural hair with a steamer?
Well, when you steam your hair you allow the treatment to easily penetrate your hair strands because the cuticles are lifted.

Shampoo your Hair for Less build up aka Clarify your hair
One thing i remember as i was relaxed i was afraid of water touching my hair! Ha, anyone that can relate?
Let’s talk shampooing your hair for less build up and i love this shampoos list i made with different sulfate free shampoos.
Why use sulfate free shampoo?
The ingredients that are responsible for that extra lather, sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, don’t add nutrients to strands.
Those common ingredients, found in many shampoos, can actually be very damaging to the hair.
using a sulfate free shampoo is the right way to about when you want to get rid of the excess build up!
Try some Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse for smoothness
First of all why should we use Apple cider vinegar on our hair?
chagrin valley soap and salve has a great article on ACV but what i want you to remember is that raw apple cider vinegar (ACV), packed with nutrients, can help with tangles and frizzy hair, bring back body and shine, decrease residue and clarify, stimulate the scalp, decrease dandruff, and unclog hair follicles which may help with excess shedding or hair loss.
Here is how to make natural hair soft and manageable with ACV rinces:
- Shampoo your hair
- rinsing your hair
- mix the apple cider vinegar, water, and essential oil (optional) in a plastic bottle
- Leaning your head back
- pour the rinse over your entire scalp
- allowing the mixture to run through your hair.
- Let the mixture sit on your hair for 1-2 minutes.
- rinse thoroughly.
Note: Be careful to avoid contact with your eyes!
Heat + deep conditioner = Soft and Manageable hair!
Deep conditioners need heat in order for them to penetrate into the hair shaft. There are two types of deep conditioners, protein and moisture. You need both for balance.
Protein based deep conditioners are designed to strengthen the hair, improve elasticity, equalise porosity, improve hair appearance and add body.
Getting the right deep conditioner can make all the difference in your hair. Since it’s used often i recommend investing in a good one. you can check this list of 12 amazing deep conditioners under 15$!
Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist Deep Conditioning Treatment is one of my favorite deep conditioners guys! You should try it out plus i love the price which is bellow 10$!
Amazon’s best choice Hydrating Argan Oil Hair Mask and Deep Conditioner is also a amazing deep conditioning treatment to try out!

Maintain that softness with moisture and sealing
I also add sealing with a oil because we might do the right thing by moisturizing it but not sealing in the moisture and we end up loosing everything much sooner!
For my DIY sisters you could also try this 15+ homemade natural hair moisturizers ! Now we are talking about softness !
Try a new protective style
Okay whoever that havent try a protective style needs to have a seat! like, right now!!
Haha, joking! But is a serious note protective style can help you keep your hair soft and manageable because you do less to it than you would normally do.
A protective style is any a style that keeps your ends safely tucked away. These styles can require very little daily upkeep and help strands stay moisturized.

Stretch those curls out honey!
But Queen, how to make natural hair soft and manageable by just stretching it?
Well, keeping your hair stretched after a wash day is a great way to keep your hair soft. I have come to notice that when i wash my hair and don’t keep it stretched it tend to shrink and kind of get a mix sensation.
This is what will happen if you don’t make sure your hair is well maintained mostly at night… (haha!)
Keeping my hair stretched by applying a good leave in conditioner after my was and sealing has worked for me.
Re-stretching daily by braiding helps me keep the hair stretched but that’s for the days that my hair is out.
Avoid too much heat
How to Make Natural Hair Soft and Manageable with less heat? By using excessive amount of heat can turn your lovely hair into a dry land so i totally recommend to minimize the amount of heat you place on your hair.
If you by all means need to heat style it try investing into some good tools for that case.
Here are 3 heat protectants that i believe are a great try. You can also read the review of each one of them on amazon and get the best for your hair!
