The gray hair adventure begins with melanocytes, cells that stay around the hair follicle and produce melanin.
Melanin, of course, is the natural pigment in skin and hair. The melanin produced through melanocytes disperses into the cortex of growing hair strands, and the shape and concentration of that melanin determines the color and shade of your hair.
How To Make African American Gray Hair Shine
With age and other causes, your melanocytes slow down, stop producing melanin, and eventually die. This happens in a few follicles first, and eventually throughout your hair, resulting in hair without any pigment.
This is the process of going gray. While graying is affected by a range of factors including genetics, lifestyle, stress, and even ethnicity, the number one factor in graying is age.
But it’s not just the color and pigment of your hair that alters when you stop producing melanin- the structure and properties of your hair will also change. When melanocytes die, this can cause a slight change in the shape of the hair follicle.
Since your curl pattern is determined by the shape of the follicle, you may notice gray hairs will not follow the curl pattern you’re used to- they may be more or less curly than before.
Many people are under the impression that Black hair has different elements than non-Black hair. Actually, the components of all hair types are essentially the same; it is in the way the elements of the hair have structured that result in the differences in texture.
Often, the outer layer of the hair, called the cuticle, can be twice as thick for Black hair as it is for other types of hair. Black hair also tends to be drier because it is more difficult for the natural oil secretions to effectively penetrate the more tightly-curled hair.
Gray hair is also in general, more resistant to coloring and chemical treatments than other hair colors.
How to Care for Your Gray African-American Hair Type
Decide whether you choose to wear your hair in a natural or relaxed style. Decide whether you will let your hair “go gray” or color it hair to conceal your gray. Select your hair care products based on your decision for hairstyle and color preference.
Wash your hair no more than once a week, gently massaging your scalp. Carefully blot out excess water with a towel. Apply a leave-in deep conditioner.
Have your hair professionally cut at least every six weeks. If desired, color your hair with a hair color preparation made especially to cover gray. Use a hair moisturizing lotion, or shea butter-type oil daily.
African-American hair tends to be more fragile than other types; therefore, take special care when combing and brushing your hair.
Using a special shampoo designed for graying hair will help alleviate a yellow tinge in your hair. De-tangle your hair upward instead of downward strokes. Good nutritional habits will help to keep your gray hair healthy.
Gently mist your hair and scalp with a spray bottle in between shampooing especially if you sweat a lot or particular in sports and exercise. Tie or cover your hair with a satin scarf or cap every night to protect it from excessive breakage.
If you decide to both chemically relax your hair and color it, relax it first. Take care in the selection of hair color when covering your gray hair; try not change your natural color any more than two shades lighter or darker. Take particular cautions in keeping your gray hair moisturized with products specifically for Black hair types. Gray hair in African-Americans tends to dry out and break off more easily; choose your hairstyle accordingly.
Be more careful with your hair than you’re used to.
Gray hairs have reduced strength and elasticity, making them very breakable. Be careful of over-styling or using too much heat, both of which will be more damaging than before. You can also try protein treatments every 4 to 8 weeks.
Moisture is more important than ever before!
Gray hair tends to be drier, so be diligent with conditions and moisturizers. Always use oils to seal in moisture, use a daily leave-in conditioner, and if you’re still struggling with dryness, deep condition more often- even up to once a week.
Stay Away from conditioners or hair products with mineral oil.
Stay away from harsh shampoos and other chemicals!
Make sure you protect your hair from UV radiation.
Remember that A healthy body is a key to healthy hair.

Last Note About Melanin
One more thing, melanin is a protectant from environmental damage. With the loss of melanin, your hair will become more vulnerable to UV rays, and you’ll be more likely to experience broken hair, split ends, frizz, tangling, cuticle damage, and even yellowing.
