How To Grow Natural Hair With Braids Like A Nubian Queen!
Braid are often seen as one of the best way to grow out a bad haircut, transition from relaxed hair to natural hair or to let your hair rest from the daily styling, and manipulation.
Braid allow direct access to the scalp, which makes it easier to cleanse the scalp, apply hair growth oil or hair growth pomade, and strengthen the hair without having to handle the hair (I also go for twists).
Braids are a protective hairstyle but if you don’t braid your hair in the right way you will lose hair!
When it comes to braids you need to understand that braiding your hair will lead to breakage if:
- Your braids are tiny
- You neglect your hair while it’s in braids
To make sure your hair does grow when it is braided do the following:
- Deep condition your hair thoroughly before braiding
- Detangle your hair well before you go to the stylist as she will be less patient with detangling your hair for you; if your hair is all tangled she will break more of it than you would
- Don’t put a large hair extension on a small patch of hair because the pulling impact could lead to breakage
- Plait your hair without using extensions, e.g. by doing cornrows or single plaits and twists with your own hair only
- If you do use extensions, consider cornrowing the hair on the front edge. It tends to be more prone to breakage
- Ensure you treat your hair just as well in braids as you do when it’s not. This means washing, deep conditioning and moisturizing every 7 to 1o days
- Continue to spritz it with water twice daily. This will ensure that when you unbraid the hair it’s not dry and brittle
- When you take the braids out give your hair a break. I think two weeks is a decent enough time to assess the state of your hair before putting on a new set of braids.

Box braids are individual plaits that are usually divided by small squared off parts or boxes. It varies in size with both mini and chunky twists being popular hairstyle options.
Other types of braids to try
Very good for length retention but require more takedowns for proper maintenance of conditioning and washing.
These type of braids are the most dangerous for your hairline and hair health.
Micros are very stressful on your natural thirsty roots and can cause traction alopecia if worn too long or too often. So I just mentioned it to tell you to better avoid this type!
So What Is the BEST size for Braiding Hair?
When it comes to size what matters is the Weight and the Tensile Strength of your braids. Let’s break it down:
This is particularly important if you are using hair extensions.
When you braid a very small section of hair as in micro or mini micro braids and you attach to this section to hair extensions, you are adding stress to your follicles from the extra weight of the extensions.
A larger section of hair will be able to withstand the weight of hair extensions better than a small section.
Imagine if you will how easy it is to snap a single strand of hair as compared to snapping multiple strands joined together.
It’s the same concept they use when creating industrial ropes. By combining multiple strands they create stronger ropes.
Braids will withstand the rigors of your daily styling routine when they are thicker rather than thinner.
How to care for hair before and while wearing braids
Here sore some important steps that you have to not skip in order to have a great hair braid experience:
Do this before braiding Your hair
Make sure your hair is clean, deep-conditioned, and moisturized prior to install, to make sure your hair can actually go the distance without damage.
Additionally, make sure that your braids aren’t too tight since this can lead to breakage!
What to do After braiding Your hair
Continue to give your hair moisture by spritzing it with water one to two times a day.
You may also want to keep washing, deep conditioning, and moisturizing it just like you would without braids.
You can do this every seven to 10 days and consider taking your braids out every six to eight weeks (don’t go for too long ) and sleep with a silk or satin scarf on your head or invest in those types of pillowcases.
Things to remember…
While braids can be a great protective style they can also cause damage if not done properly.
- Do not put braids in too tight, this can be particularly damaging to edges
- If using extensions avoid using small parts and large amounts of weave, this can weight down your hair and cause hair loss.
- Moisturize your hair before braiding and continue to moisturize regularly to prevent breakage
- Keep your scalp clean and lubricated with light oil
- Use a satin scarf or pillow case at night to keep your braids from frizzing
Braids and twisting your thirsty roots is good for length retention and protective styling as long as you properly wear them.
Good routine maintenance of washing, moisturizing and conditioning is mandatory.
Covering them at night and avoiding tight styling options while rocking your braids are also required for maximum results.
This will help you maintain 1 to 1 1/2 inches of hair growth per month.
I know, braid hairstyles can be challenging because they can take more practice than some of the other styles.
