Before you start applying the tips on how to grow back edges with castor oil you need to understand what does castor oil do for your hair.

What Does Castor Oil Do for the Hair?

Castor oil can be used on the scalp to help prevent and remedy hair loss and it is effective at this for several reasons.

Actually, its antibacterial and antifungal properties make it beneficial against folliculitis, dandruff, and scalp infections and its ricinoleic acid content help increase circulation to the scalp and improve hair growth.

Did you know that ricinoleic acid is also said to help balance scalp pH which can also help replenish the scalp’s natural oils and undo some of the damage of harsh chemical hair products?

The antioxidants in castor oil also support the keratin in hair and help make hair stronger, smoother, and less frizzy.

So now that you know what does castor oil do for your hair the next thing you need to to know is what type of castor oil is good for your hair.

Know that unrefined and cold-pressed hexane-free castor oil is preferred when it comes to learning how to grow back edges with castor oil.

Castor oil is extremely thick and viscous so a good trick is to mix it with jojoba or argan oil in a glass dropper bottle for easy application.

What Type of Castor Oil for Hair?

There are three types of castor oil that are popularly used for hair care:

  1. organic castor oil
  2. Jamaican black castor oil
  3. hydrogenated castor oil.

While the castor seeds are originally from Africa, they made their way to Jamaica due to the slave trade.

Personally, I love learning how to use Jamaican black castor oil for hair growth because it has so many benefits as an oil.

I ordered two bottles like these from here.

21 Classy Protective Hairstyles For Natural Hair Growth

Organic/Cold Pressed Castor Oil

  • Extracted directly from the castor seed with no heat involved
  • Uses a mechanical and non-chemical method called expeller pressing
  • The cold pressing ensures there is no degradation of any of the nutrients present in the seed
  • It is pale yellow in color
  • If you have curly hair and an itchy or dry scalp that is prone to irritation, it is recommended that you use unrefined, hexane-free organic castor oil as it is less alkaline than JBCO.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO)

  • Initially roasted and then pressed for oil
  • The ashes of the roasted castor seeds are added to the oil, which gives it its black color
  • If you have straight hair and a healthy scalp, you are more likely to benefit from JBCO, which is better at penetrating and cleansing

Castor oil is extremely thick and viscous so I prefer to mix with jojoba or argan oil in a glass dropper bottle for easy application.

Hydrogenated Castor Oil (Castor Wax)

  • Made by hydrogenating pure castor oil with the help of a nickel catalyst
  • Unlike regular castor oil, castor wax is brittle, odorless, and insoluble in water
  • Mainly used in cosmetics, varnishes, and polishes

Now that you know some really good brands for your castor oil shopping the question you might have is how long does it take to see the result.

Usually, for the scalp, it will take around 5-6 months to regrow.
The growth period might vary based on your health and age group.
Now that we know about the duration your hair needs to regrow let’s talk about the thickness.

Science Confirms Castor Oil Does Not Thicken Hair Strands but it is often encouraged to lightly massage the oil into the scalp.
A scalp massage alone could possibly stimulate blood circulation, which may help the flow of nutrients in the papilla.
So a good practice would be to apply the castor oil on your scalp and follow up with a good scalp massage to help the blood flow.
Since 90% of castor oil’s nutritional content is made up of ricinoleic acid.
This, combined with the omega-6 and 9 fatty acids, penetrates the hair shafts and roots and nourishes it, restoring its optimum health and boosting hair growth.

How Often Should You Use Castor Oil On Your Hair?

Castor oil works differently on different hair types so it depends on your motive behind using this oil.

  • Those aiming for hair loss need to use the oil at least twice a week for a minimum of four weeks to see noticeable results. If it is convenient, you can use the oil 3-4 times a week.
  • On the other hand, for increased shine, use castor oil as a conditioner once a week. A pea-sized quantity is enough for this purpose.
  • For split ends, massage your hair with castor oil twice or thrice a week. If you can, leave the oil on overnight for maximum benefits.
