How To Define Curls On 4c Hair Like A Curly Boss!
If you have 4c hair then you will notice that this hair type has different porosities and densities, which affects how it behaves.
Oh yeah, you got it right, one these behaviors is the fact that you don’t really see defined curls when it’s at it natural state.
So how do you go about it? You have some options to take! Doing styles that include or not include products could make all the difference.
So what products am I talking about? Glad you asked! When I mention products they can include curling creams, styling gels, and the list goes on and on…
In general, you should be trying styles that promote curls using different methods like shingling, braiding, curling, bantu knotting and so many more options.
So What Is A Curl Pattern?
When it comes to hair care you need to know that a hair pattern is a term that, that describes the shape in which your hair naturally grows in.
Base on your hair follicles the pattern is influenced primarily by that but there are also external factors such as weather, heat, chemicals or damage can alter your hair pattern.
You need to also understand curl patterns hair types which falls into four categories.
Each category is further subdivided into a, b and c. For example A means wide, B is medium, and C signifies tight.
Why Doesn’t your 4c Hair Have A Defined Curl Patterns?
This happens because your hair type has the tightest curls with hairs forming Z’s or S s in its raw state ( talking about no products on your hair).
You should also notice that many 4c naturals experience hair shrinkage of up to 70 percent.
Your 4c hair does not have defined curls, unless such defined curls are created so today we checking into that, can I get a Amen!
How To Define Curls On 4c Hair!
When it comes to defining 4c hair there are three popular methods for defining curls:
– The Curly Girl Method
– The Tightly Curly Method
– and The Maximum Hydration Method
CURLY GIRL METHOD
This method of curl definition was developed by Lorraine Massey and shared in her book
Curly Girl: The Handbook.
The main thing to do is to eliminate silicones, petroleum products, sulfates and heat.
In this case, to eliminate sulfates, shampoos are not used at all.
You can use a silicone free conditioner only to cowash your hair, such as VO5 Conditioners, Suave Naturals, Jessicurl Too Shea, or Kenra, Tresemme Naturals, etc.
Make sure your leave-in conditioners or gels should never contain sulfates, silicones, alcohols, petrolatum, mineral oil and its derivatives.
You could try Kinky Curly Knot Today and Giovanni Direct Leave In, etc. Gels include Ecostyler gels, Fantasia IC Hair Polisher, Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper and Kinky Curly Curling Custard.
Does it work on 4c hair?
Yes, it does.
Your curls may get tight and start popping. You may notice a texture different but if your hair is very tightly coiled, it may not improve curl definition but will definitely keep it feeling softer and less stripped.
TIGHTLY CURLY METHOD
This method was developed by Teri LaFlesh and is shared in her book Curly Like Me.
Her method is similar to the Curly Girl Method one but in that, you use mainly a conditioner.
This is how it works:
Use a sulfate free shampoo or cowash your hair.
Comb or brush your hair with lots of conditioner with slip.
– You can defuse your hair and trim if needed using no gel

This technique involves applying loads of conditioner to hair cleansed with a sulfate free shampoo or cowash and combing it through from tips to roots until the hair clumps visibly and the conditioner disappears.
Try using a conditioner that is thick with loads of slip to avoid damage from combing or brushing your hair.
You can use Alaffia Coconut and Shea Daily Hydrating Conditioner, Aveeno Nourish and Shine Conditioner, Organix Nourishing Coconut Milk Conditioner, Aussie Moist Conditioner, and Tresemme conditioner.
I would go for the Denman brush but you can also use a shower detangling brush with good results.
The point is the brush should have very smooth bristles and be well spaced. It allows the hair to clump beautifully.
It can work on 4c hair but if your hair has low porosity, the conditioner will just sit on top of your hair.
This method might define your curls tho but if you are not a friend of shrinkage, it can shrink your hair tremendously. So have that in mind!
MAXIMUM HYDRATION METHOD
This method was developed by Pinke Cube a member of Black Hair Media.
We all know how soft and curly our hair is when freshly washed and how it disappears when it is dry right?!
Well this method is designed to infuse the hair with so much moisture that it hardly has a dry moment.
With this method, you will avoid products with sulfates, petroleum derivatives, silicones and drying alcohols.
You also will avoid products with emulsified oils, aloe vera gel/juice and glycerine because they dry out some naturals’ hair.
The night before, you clarify with baking soda (if you have low porosity hair) or with Apple Cider Vinegar ( if you have high porosity hair).
Then you deep condition your hair and apply a shower cap overnight.
In the morning, you rinse out the conditioner, apply a clay treatment such as bentonite or rhassoul clay, wait for 15mins then rinse out. You then apply your leave in conditioner and seal with a gel.
If you shower early in the morning and again in the evening, this shouldn’t be tedious unless you come back home dead tired!
Since you detangled the night before with the D.C. you should have less tangles by morning which improves within the 7 days of the regimen.
You can try leave-in conditioners like Kinky Curly Knot Today, Jessicurl Deep Treatment, Kinky Curly Tiny Twirls, Giovanni Direct Leave In.
Some great gels to use are Kinky Curly Curling Custard, Giovanni L.A. Natural Styling Gel, Flaxseed gel, CurlyGirl Silky Custard.
The summary of all the methods are:
– use the right pH balanced products for your hair
– moisture, moisture, moisture
– keep those curls together
