A good thing to do is to have a regimen that includes deep conditioner for curly hair, but  you should also know it’s possible to overdo it.

Let’s get into little bit of the basics so you can better understand why your 4c hair needs to be deep conditioned.

What is deep conditioning and why is it so important?

Deep conditioning helps improve the look, feel, and manageability of your hair.
If you do it often your hair will produce healthier, softer, less damaged hair but know that in order to maintain healthy hair, there needs to be a balance between protein and moisture.

What is Protein?

Protein treatments are a vital part of keeping your natural hair healthy because your hair is mostly made up of a protein called keratin.
If your hair lacks it, it can feel and look brittle and have low elasticity.
What should you do about both? Striking this balance is going to create a healthy environment for natural hair to grow and prosper.

How to deep condition 4c hair

A good way to start is by picking out a deep conditioner. Here are 5 things you need to have in mind when it comes to learning how To Deep Condition 4c Hair:
  • Conditioning works best after using a clarifying shampoo so your hair will be super clean and absorb better the nutrients.
  • Remember to section the hair after washing while you remember to distribute the conditioner and focus it on your ends because they could always use some extra attention.
  • Wrap your hair in a plastic cap and leave it you can either apply heat. I like to use a blow dryer. Or if you’re in the shower, just enjoy the steam.
  • Leave the conditioner on for up to 30 minutes, then rinse it with the first warm then cold water to seal in the moisture.
  • Make sure to deep condition at least once a week!

Since 4C hair has the tightest curls of all hair patterns, with hairs forming tight s’s, z’s or coils here are some of the defining qualities of 4C hair:

  • 4c hair dries out quickly or struggles to maintain moisture more than other curl patterns (that also depends on your porosity)
  • You can experience extreme shrinkage!
  • Tangles and matting can appear if not properly cared for and regularly detangled
  • Your hair is fragile and prone to breakage

how to deep condition 4c hair with these Quick Tips

Stay in step. Deep-condition your hair regularly, but don’t overdo it. Depending on your hair’s moisture needs, once per week or every two weeks should do the trick.

Dont forget your ends. Your ends are the oldest part of your hair and typically more prone to breakage, therefore, they should be treated with the utmost respect. Applying deep conditioner to your ends first allows the elder part of your curls to get full nourishing benefits.

Warm it up. Since your hair better absorbs deep conditioner when it’s heated up to at least 95 degrees Fahrenheit, you can sit under a dryer to help your deep-conditioner to penetrate your strands with a plastic bag, or by warming the conditioner before applying it increases its effectiveness.

Alternate between conditioner and protein treatment. To keep your hair nourished and properly moisturized, alternate using a deep-conditioner and a Protein Treatment will help you have balanced between moisture and protein.

DO KEEP IT REGULAR. Your hair will be more manageable, softer, less prone to breakage and frizz, and is able to retain length.

If it still feels dry, pump it up to twice a week.

Try a steamer. Steam is one of the major ways to keep your hair hydrated and give yourself a moisture boost during deep conditioning sessions. Steaming hair while covered in deep conditioner also helps improve elasticity and moisture retention.

Things to not do while deep conditioning…

Don’t deep condition overnight or for hours on end. The obvious exception to this rule is treatments like henna, that require hours to take to the hair.

If your deep conditioner doesn’t work after 30 minutes, find another one what will be more effective.

Don’t use your DC to co-wash or as a leave-in conditioner. Deep conditioners are specially formulated to be especially adept at what they do – providing intense conditioning to the hair. And while they may feel nice in the hair, and can in some cases make pretty sweet curl definers, using them to cowash or as leave-ins is generally a no-no. Deep conditioners tend to contain higher concentrations of cationic surfactants (their primary function is to stick to the hair), and will likely lead to even more buildup if used as a cowash or leave-in.

Don’t let your DCs sit in storage long-term.

If you are trying a DIY mix of avocados, greek yogurt, and Hello Hydration, or you tried mixing your two favorite conditioners together, it is never a good idea to keep mixes for longer than a few days because they may end up doing more harm than good.

Keep your deep conditioner for a good amount (a reasonable amount of time) and get a new one or create a new mix
