Note that these tips should work best for natural hair types 3 and 4.
Always wash in lukewarm water only
Hot water must never, ever touch natural hair. The hotter it runs, the worse it is for the health of your tresses. Therefore, the first rule of preventing frizz is to keep the water as cold as you can take it. Lukewarm is a good compromise and if you can, turn the temperature down some more when rinsing.
Also, use microfiber cloth or towel to dry your hair very gently. Never rub your wet tresses as this will make them frizz like crazy. Even good product would struggle to remove the problem afterward.
Use keratin treatments on steroids
If you want to not only combat the annoying frizz but also to straighten your hair, keratin treatments are your new best friend. In fact, nearly all your hair care products should be keratin-based. However, you need to go beyond the basic formulas available in the nearest shop.
Instead, choose professional-grade treatments that can strengthen and hydrate your beautiful natural hair on every level. Keraterm is one such treatment, which contains keratin with macadamia oil and shea butter. This combo hydrates natural hair deeply and literally infuses hair shafts with keratin sealing the cuticles. Because of the potent effect, the product can transform any hair, be it natural or one already subjected to chemical straightening.
The treatment activates with heat. Therefore, you need to use it before blow drying or using a flat iron to style your hair. As a result, you’ll get full luscious locks that shine and are silky to the touch.
Remember that keratin treatments are not only about straightening. They literally help infuse your hair with keratin protein. If you aren’t aware, human hair is made up of 90% natural keratin. Styling and poor hair care damage it, which is why it becomes brittle. Keratin treatments help restore the structure of hair and make it look like it should.
Use oil treatments
A good keratin treatment is a must if you want to make your locks sleek. But you also mustn’t forget that natural oil treatments are essential for your hair. You should get one once a week at the least. If frizziness is a major problem, try doing it twice.
The best oils for this are the ones that hydrate best, which means coconut, jojoba, and castor. However, any type of hot oil hair treatment will have a good hydrating effect. Therefore, you can experiment, or simply use what you have easily available.
Admittedly, it’s best to splurge on professional-grade keratin treatments. But for oil-based hair care, the more natural it is – the better. This means that you can use the same oils you use for cooking or simply buy pure cosmetic oils online.
If you are out of time, money, or desire to bother trying to combat the frizz by improving the structure of your hair, you’re lucky that you have natural hair. This type is uniquely suited for hairstyles that will make this problem all but invisible.
Braids and weaves are the best styles if you want to avoid looking frizzy. However, remember that if your hair is very damaged and brittle, it won’t look good even in those styles. In fact, styling this way could damage it further. Therefore, it’s imperative that you heal and restore your tresses before you put them up in tight braids.
Embrace the frizz
On most occasions, the frizz is your enemy. But if you are going for a voluminous style today, lucky owners of 3C-4C hair can use it to add some volume.
Styling this way will take some practice and you’ll need to add finishing touches with extra-strong moisturizing gel. But in this case, frizziness would only help make your hair look amazing. Consider saving this style for wet weather days when your locks are particularly unruly.
