What is hair porosity?

If the hair has closed pores moisture has a hard time penetrating the hair shaft, but once it has penetrated the hair shaft moisture tends to be locked in.

Normal porosity hair allows the right amount of moisture to penetrate the hair cuticle and is evidence of how well it will hold a chemical treatment such as color.

Porosity is your hair’s ability to absorb moisture can be categorized in three ways: low, normal, and high. Low porosity hair has tightly closed pores that resist moisture and tends to create protein-sensitivity.

High porosity hair is most likely the result of either damaged hair or chemically treated hair. It is characterized by large pores which leads to allowing too much moisture to enter the hair strand.

It’s important to note that protein is essential in repairing large holes and gaps in the hair strand. Knowing your hair’s porosity is critical in the natural hair care community because it will determine which products and ingredients are best to keep your natural hair healthy and moisturized.

Low porosity hair generally looks healthy and has lots of sheen because of the smooth cuticle layer.

HAIR POROSITY TEST

Natural hair has proven to be different from a person’s head, so you should use different strands of various sections of your hair to get a full analysis of your hair’s porosity. Secondly, you will place the strand of hair in a glass of water.

The best indicator for which porosity type your hair falls under is the hair porosity test. This test is easy and simple to conduct and doesn’t require any purchases.

Allow a few minutes for the hair to absorb the water at its own rate. Hair that remains at the top of the water is categorized as low porosity hair.

The strand of hair that flows midway in the glass is classified as average porosity. Lastly, hair that sinks to the bottom almost immediately would be considered porous hair or high porosity.

Try using heat caps and hooded dryers for deep conditioners. They are great tools to help certain ingredients adsorb onto the hair shaft and makes your curls, coils, and waves feel softer.

Clarify your hair. Low porosity hair is prone to having product build-up. Build up + shingle tight cuticles = sad dry hair. Use a clarifying shampoo to remove the build-up and give your hair a fresh start.Wash And Go 4C Hair: All You Need To Know!

Deep condition with heat. It is important to open your cuticle a bit to deep condition your hair properly.

By using heat you are assured that the cuticle layers will lift so the interior of your strands is moisturized.

Consider using or alternating your leave-in conditioner with a lightweight moisturizer or hair milk with humectants for soft curls, coils, and waves between wash days.

Use Indirect Heat. Apply deep conditioner to your hair, covering it with a cap (be sure it is made to withstand the heat) and applying indirect heat via hooded dryer.
Use Direct Heat. This is done by applying the deep conditioner to your hair and using direct heat from a hair steamer.
Avoid heavy styling products. Just adds unnecessary weight to the hair and contributes heavily to build up.
Thick products accumulate quickly, causing product buildup up that leads to dryness, especially with multiple applications between wash days.

If you like sealing your hair at the end of your regimen and refreshing your hair through the week, then consider light oils and light refreshers to rejuvenate your curls. What Does Low Porosity Hair Need In Order To Thrive?

Avoid moisturizing wet natural hair. Try moisturizing your hair while its damp for better results!
Do not use heavy oils. Why? Heavy oils sit on top of your natural hair, aren’t fully absorbed beyond the cuticle layer.
Use light oils. Lightweight oils are great for low porosity natural hair. Lightweight oils such as apricot kernel oil, argan oil, grapeseed oil, and sweet almond oil are ideal.

Here are some Products to Avoid

Silicones: You should avoid using products containing water-insoluble silicones because you already have a compact hair cuticle layer and don’t need anything that can coat the hair shaft.

Protein-enriched styling products: Protein-rich leave-in products may not be beneficial for low porous strands because there are not many tears or gaps in the cuticle layer that need to be filled.
