22 Must-Know Rules For Getting Healthy Natural Hair

1. Make sure your hands aren’t in your hair.

First and foremost (and this is a tough one): Keep your hands as far away from your hair as possible! While it’s natural to stroke your curls or even have a little fun with those ringlets now and then, letting them alone can help prevent damage to your hair’s ends. As much as possible, avoid touching your hair during style and wash day.

2. Don’t forget to deep-condition your hair.

A must-have! There’s no excuse not to deep condition these days: It takes at least five minutes, you can multitask (and #multimask! ), and you definitely have some important ingredients in your kitchen cupboard (dare we say coconut oil?) if you run out of your favorite product. There are no excuses, and your curls will appreciate the extra moisture.

3. Get your nightly routine down pat.

You’d be astonished at how much damage your hair may sustain when you’re sleeping. Develop a nighttime routine in addition to your natural hair care routine to maintain both your hairstyle and the overall healthy look and feel of your hair. To preserve the moisture in your hair and reduce unwanted friction on strands when sleeping, we recommend sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase or wearing a headwrap.

4. Apply moisturizer on a daily basis.

Sorry if I seem like a broken record, but we’re all about maintaining the health of those strands! Curly hair is usually dry by nature. As a result, adding moisture on a daily basis is critical. You can probably get away with doing this every other day, but the idea is to hydrate your strands on a regular basis.

5. Every 6-8 weeks, trim your hair.

A proper trim, in addition to moisture, is essential for a happy curl. Don’t be scared to use the scissors; curls are usually at their best when they’re free of damage or split ends. You’ll avoid a greater chop down the road if you get your hair trimmed on a regular basis (every 1-2 months). You can’t blame the hairdresser for being too eager with the scissors; split ends spread higher, so the longer you wait, the more hair you’ll have to trim.

6. Make good use of heat.

Many women with natural hair may tell you not to use heat on their hair at all. Let’s face it, there are times when you just want to flaunt a straight hairstyle like everyone else, and you should! If you opt to use heat styling equipment to style your hair, make sure to use a heat protectant to keep your curls safe.

7. Change up your hair care routine according to the season.

Pay attention to your hair in the winter because what works in the summer may not work in the winter. Because the weather can affect how our hair behaves, modify up your hair care routine as the seasons change if necessary.

Include oil treatments in your hair care routine during the winter months, when your hair may seem unusually dry. Use natural hair oils that penetrate the hair shaft hydrating from within, such as coconut oil, and others that cover the shaft, such as argan oil, to help seal in moisture.

Obey the guidelines and learn to appreciate your hair! Which of these natural hair care tips are you incorporating into your routine?

8. Take Care of Your Hair

Don’t know how to keep your hair in good shape? It cannot be overstated: healthy hair begins on the inside. We’re not suggesting that you go vegan, but if you want a healthy scalp, you should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water. If you have a hard time eating vegetables, making a fruit and veggie smoothie is a quick and delicious way to get your daily intake. This will provide the nutrients that your hair follicles require to help each hair strand thrive.

9. Remember to take your vitamins

If you’ve ever wondered, “Do hair vitamins work?” we’re here to tell you that they do! A vitamin supplement can actually help boost your general hair health when it comes to understanding how to keep your hair healthy. It’s possible that you’re not getting enough important vitamins and healthy fats in your diet if your hair isn’t growing. A daily vitamin supplement, such as our hair vitamins, will supplement your diet by filling up any nutritional gaps and promoting healthy hair development.

10. Heat Should Be Handled With Caution

Too much of a good thing, as the adage goes, may be harmful. Make sure to utilize a heat protectant when building a healthy hair care routine to avoid hair breakage and damage. Heat tools should be used sparingly if you want to encourage a healthy scalp and avoid split ends or dry hair. Too much heat applied too frequently can cause damage to your hair, which can eventually prevent it from returning to its natural state. Furthermore, regardless of hair type, too much or wrong application of heat can result in dry, brittle hair, breakage, and split ends. If you want long hair, you don’t have to give up heat for good, but you need be careful with your technique and how much you use to avoid dry hair. Here are some pointers:

Use heat instruments with explicit settings (rather than just “on/off”), and only use the low or medium settings.
To ensure that your hair is adequately moisturized, prepare it for heat styling during the cleansing and conditioning step.
Always use a heat shield! This will protect your hair by acting as a barrier between your hair tool and your hair.
Mielle’s Mongongo Oil Collection is designed to prime hair for heat styling even before it’s cleansed and conditioned, leaving it soft and manageable. Plus, this set includes a Thermal & Heat Protectant Spray, ensuring a stunning finish without the risk of harm.

11. Cleanse your hair and scalp on a regular basis.

Yes, healthy hair begins on the inside, but it also requires a clean, healthy environment to thrive in. A clogged scalp with debris can obstruct pores and follicles, slowing down healthy growth. And, let’s face it, unwashed hair isn’t exactly sanitary!

It’s entirely up to you how often you wash your hair, depending on your daily schedule (maybe you work out every day), how many natural hair products you use, and so on. Our Mongongo Oil Exfoliating Shampoo’s cleansing power removes any build-up on the hair and scalp while leaving your hair’s natural oils intact. This product is suitable for all hair types and is an excellent supplement to any natural hair routine.

12. When cleaning, use your fingertips.

A nice scratch could feel pretty pleasant depending on how your scalp feels on wash day. However, using your fingernails on your scalp may create unneeded injury. All you need for a thorough clean is the pads of your fingers and a little pressure.

13. Use a shampoo that is free of sulfates.

sulfate-containing shampoos deplete the hair’s natural hydration. To gently cleanse while hydrating the hair, use a moisturizing shampoo like our Babassu Oil Conditioning Sulfate-Free Shampoo. For your natural hair care journey, using a sulfate-free natural hair shampoo can help enhance hair texture, minimize hair breakage, and promote hair growth.

14. Intensive Care

Because of the form of our heads, our hair needs extra moisture, especially if we have textured hair. Follow up with a decent deep conditioner hair product as the final step in your wash process to restore moisture to each hair strand.

15. Follow the directions for using the deep conditioner.

Although overnight conditioning is trendy, it is unneeded and may harm your strands. It’s not necessary to keep your deep conditioner on for any longer than the guidelines specify. To learn more, see our post on deep conditioners.

16. Gently detangle from the root to the end.

Curly and kinky hair needs a lot of attention. Start at the very ends of the tangles and work your way up to the roots carefully and gently to avoid breaking the hair.

17. Seal & Moisturize

Continuing the procedure, the most effective technique to preserve moisture is to apply hair product while it’s still damp. To maintain your hair healthy, silky, and manageable, use a leave-in conditioner or hair mask with your preferred styler, as well as an organic hair oil to seal in moisture. Hair product regimens can assist strengthen the hair shaft while also healing damaged hair.

18. Get Trims On A Regular Basis

Trimming your hair gets rid of broken and split ends that can lead to more damaged hair, which some people find counterproductive to growth. Trimming the hair once a season (or as needed) will prevent damage and keep it at its healthiest. To understand more, see our blog post on natural hair growth.

19. Put on protective clothing.

If you have curly hair, tucking your hair away in styles that require little to no manipulation for a few days or months will help you keep length and support healthy hair growth.

20. Keep your hair safe at night

Wrap your hair in a satin or silk scarf or bonnet at night to keep it hydrated and less prone to breaking. A satin pillowcase would suffice if you like to wear your hair down. For additional information, see our article on how to protect your natural hair.

21. Massaging the Scalp

A relaxing scalp massage once or twice a week will help stimulate hair follicles and increase blood flow to the scalp, promoting healthy hair development. After detangling your damp hair after a shower, rub it. Apply a hair mask for more moisture and enhanced protection.

22. Don’t Stress

Relaxing is easier said than done, yet it is the best thing you can do for your hair. Stress can show up in our skin and hair, whether it’s from fretting over your hair length or something else. So, if you want to have better hair, attempt to limit your stress as much as possible. Once again, the health of your hair takes precedence above its length. Concentrate on its well-being, and the length will appear before you know it!
