What is Havana twists?
If you ever wondered what exactly is havana twists i reassure you that you’re not alone in this.
With so many protective styles it’s easy to get lost in them.
Havana twists are hair extensions similar to marley twists but are created using havana hair. Havana twists are large, chunky twists that can also be installed using the invisible root method. Havana twists have the texture of natural hair but it can also be installed with marley braid hair although havana twists hair is softer and much fuller since it’s chunkier.
Does havana twists make your hair grow?
Okay so you’ve heard that protective styles are perfect for hair growth and you’re wondering if havana twists also will do the trick.
By wearing them you’re giving your hair the nessesary break that it needs in order to grow.
In one word, yes it can help your hair grow but remember that too much of everything is not good.
As we go on I’ll share the recommended time span that you should keep your twists and also how to properly maintain them.
Now let’s get into the fun part:
How to do havana twist?
If you’re like me and love doing most of your hairstyles alone this one will be no exception.
Havana twists can look easy to be done but there is a specific technique you need to follow in order to not end up with a mess!
For real, I always believed in the word “read the manual”.
Now we don’t have a manual of hairstyles but we can always learn from others that have done it and succeed.
For my visual Queens here is a really detailed and helpful video on how to install them.
If you’re more of a reading type of Queen let me break the steps down for you:
- Fold Havana hair piece in half.
- Comb one end of hair piece, starting at the end.
- Comb the other end of hair piece
- Havana hair piece is now ready to be styled with
I totally recommend watching the video in order to get a good picture of how it’s done.
What are some good havana twists hair tips?
Yes you went ahead and got them done on your own.
Say what?! Way to go girl 🙂
Now let me share few tips that will help you along the way (note that the first tips are for those that are in the process of installing them):
Comb the Havana hair.
Now this is for those that haven’t even started but before adding the extensions to your hair, comb the synthetic hair pieces with a narrow tooth comb.
Start combing the one end of the hair piece until you reach the center. Next, comb the other end of the hair piece.
Moisturize your Havana hair.
I love this spray bottle because it’s affordable and works great.

Lay the Havana hair on top of a towel. Spray hair lightly then squeeze moisture throughout hair.
Here is your simple Havana hair moisture mix recipe:
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1 tablespoon of oil
- 3-4 drops of essential oil
Use a pomade while twisting.
When adding Havana twists extensions to your hair, twist the hair with a pomade or a thick styling cream.
Pomades have a sticky texture that will make the hair smooth down, allowing the twists to have a good-looking finish.
Twist your hair lightly.
Add your Havana twists extensions by twisting your hair without applying too much pressure.
When you twist the twists lightly, the twists look bigger and more chunky when finished.
Reuse your hair extensions.
You can keep your twists in up to two weeks before washing. Save the hair extensions and reuse them one more time.
If you keep your twists extensions in longer than two weeks, do not reuse the hair as it will have more build-up.
What hair to use for havana twists?
Now there are more than these type of hair that you can use so make sure to do a good extra research when you’re ready
They all will do because they’re easy to detangle and twist.
How long do havana twists last?
So you went ahead and get them done and you don’t know how long do havana twists last?
You can keep Havana twists hair in up to two weeks before washing. If you keep your Havana twists extensions in longer than two weeks, do not reuse the hair as it will have more build-up And make sure to properly maintain your havana twists hair.
Let’s get into the caring part of your havana twists.
How to moisturize havana twists?
It’s really important to know how to moisturize havana twists because it makes all the difference.
You can moisturize havana twists by using any cream like Creme of Nature’s Argan Oil Moisture Cream.
Since I love things that smell good, you won’t be disappointed. With hints of amber and bergamot your hair will be smelling great. You can massage the cream into your scalp and twists.
Another way to moisturize your hair is allowing the steam from your shower to add in the needed moisture while you take your shower.
When to moisturize your havana twists?
You can moisturize them any time of the day but best is at night time right before bed a couple times of a week.
How to condition havana twists?
Who said you can’t condition your havana twists?
To keep your twists soft and tangle free your can spritz a little of Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-In Conditioner onto my twists. (This can be done once a week probably when you’re out of the shower).
By Adding the conditioner you give your hair the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and shiny.
How much does it cost to do Havana twists?
Now we are talking about money, money and more money…!
The cost of beauty, right?
Havana Twist Hair can cost anywhere near $12.99 per pack and going… meanwhile marley braid hair can cost from $4.99-$8.99 per pack and on going prices.
You can have a good look at Amazon prices which I believe are not bad.
There is also the Havana twists crochet version which is higher in price but as you know the work is easier and I’ll show you how it’s done below as we continue.
Also, another thing you could check with your local beauty supply in order to compare prices.
You will be surprised to find a cheaper pack over there (you’re welcome!).
How to maintain Havana twist?
Getting them done without maintaining them is a no-no thing to do.
Let’s look into ways you can maintain and care for your marley twists.
This video below is perfect for explaining these different strategic ways to maintain Havava twists:
This you will need
- Packs of Marley/Havana Twisting Hair Extensions (this )
- Rat Tail Comb (try this or this)
- Hair Comb (better get a wide one like this)
- Water Spray Bottle
- Hair Scissors
- Hair Gel
- Duck Bill Clips (this one should work fine)
- Blue Cold Wave Hair Rollers
- Bobby Pins (classic ones but you can get these ones)
- Dry Towel
Maintaining your Havana Twists of Marley Twists is simple and easy.
You can still shampoo, condition, and moisturize your hair in Havana Twists just as you can do the same with washing your hair in Box Braids, Senegalese Twists, and even Micro Braids and Sewins.
The trick to keeping your hair moisturized and healthy within your install is to water down all of your hairstyling products to effectively clean your hair and scalp and moisturize your hair.
Using an applicator bottle with added water to your products is a great way to distribute your shampoo, conditioner, and moisturizer into your hair and scalp without leaving behind product buildup.
Once you have finished washing and conditioning your twists, squeeze each twist really good with a thick t-shirt or dry towel and then seal your twist with your oil of choice.
Hair butters are optional to use but a liquid oil like coconut oil or olive oil would be a better choice for sealing in moisture.
So, How to keep crochet havana twists from frizzing?

If you have never deal with frizz then please, share some tips with us 🙂

With that being said let’s answer the question how to sleep with havana twists.
The video bellow gives some really good tips and visuals for those that love it.
You can also place your Twists in a loose ponytail plus lay your baby hair down with a little bit of Olive Oil Eco Styler Gel.
Proceed by covering your hair with a scarf to help set the gel in place.
Lastly, cover with your bonnet on top because your scarf may like to fall off in the middle of the night.
There you have it, Goodnight 🙂
Let’s talk about havana twist crochet hair, should I try it?
There are few reasons I think you should always try protective styles:
1. Low Maintenance
It’s really easy to get your hair done and prepare to go out when your hair is in twists.
I personally love mini twists and I can’t tell you how helpful and time saver they can be.
2. Long or Short
Now mini twists are limited to your hair length meanwhile they come in 24 inches or 12 inches, and also a wide variety of colors. My personal favorite is the 12 inches because it is the length of a classy bob.
I personally love bob styles and I you can also get it done with your mini twists as well.
Used in the video above: Janet Collection Mambo Twist Braid
4. Twists in any given color
Black is the preferred but the twists also come in literally every color of the rainbow. If you are a hair color lover then this is a option that you will love.
5. Budget Friendly
Now depending on the one, you will go for and the research you will make their prices may vary from a friendly point of view to a pricey one.
The choice is yours!
What about short havana twist styles?
I love bob looking styles and I like this style below is a good length for those that don’t really have time for long hairstyles.
Items used for the style above:
- 4 packs of Jamaican Twist Braid by Freetress Equal
- Let’s Jam Condition & Shine Gel, Extra Hold
- Creme Of Nature Argan Oil Perfect Edges
- Silk Elements Mega Silk, Extra Strength Edge Gel
- Filigree Tube Bead
- Smooth’N Shine Curl Activating Mousse
That’s a wrap and there you have it all you need to know about Havana twists hair.
