What exactly is hair conditioning?
The act of “training” your hair to only need to be washed once a week or never is known as “hair training” or “scalp training.”
The theory is that the ingredients in traditional shampoos dry up strands, therefore going back on washing can restore your hair to its natural, healthy state.
“The purpose of hair training is to make the hair less oily — including the scalp,” explains Tonya S. Lane, a formulation chemist who specializes in natural hair care.
Is it effective?
Some experts aren’t convinced: Hair training, according to Dr. Trefor Evans, a cosmetic scientist, and director of research at
TRI-Princeton is merely another beauty craze with no scientific backing.
“When you think about oily hair, I guess the first thing that comes to mind is the buildup of natural sebum on the surface of the hair and the scalp,” he adds.
“A sebaceous gland is located inside each follicle on your head, and it secretes onto your scalp and hair.”
Evans explains, “There is this belief notion that [sebum] is a natural conditioner, yet it is created all the time.”
“If you let it take its course, it will pile up and make your hair feel oily. You can’t truly change it because it’s part of your body’s basic physiology.”
However, shampooing your hair less frequently isn’t always hazardous, so if you’re interested in giving it a try, keep reading for the best advice for your hair type.
20 Ways To Make Your Hair Less Greasy And More Fabulous
1. Try a messy top knot bun.
Make the most of your “slightly” unclean hair by opting for beautiful yet purposely untidy hairstyles. The grease will add texture to your hair, making the look easier to achieve. Messy top knot buns will always save you, no matter how many horrible hair days you have.
2. Don’t use conditioners on your hair.
Applying conditioner to your roots will undoubtedly weigh down your hair and make your roots oilier. Instead, apply a small amount of conditioner from the mid-shaft to the ends of your hair.
3. Make use of dry shampoo
Yes, dry shampoo will not only absorb oil from your roots, making your hair appear less greasy in the short term, but it will also allow you to go longer between washes, making your hair less greasy in the long run.
Ingredients for a homemade all-natural dry shampoo:
2 tablespoons arrowroot/cornstarch + 2 Tablespoons cocoa powder OR 1/4 cup arrowroot powder or cornstarch (for dark hair)
In a glass bowl, combine the ingredients and store in a glass jar.
Apply the powder to the roots and oily areas of your hair with an old make-up brush.
Comb the powder through your hair if you don’t have a cosmetic brush.
Apply before bedtime or at least 2 hours ahead of time to provide time for it to absorb.
4. Don’t go overboard with the brushing.
Brushing insufficiently prevents natural oils from being disseminated, causing them to accumulate on the scalp. Brushing too hard, on the other hand, can increase oil production. Simply ensure that your hair is in a healthy equilibrium.
5. Purchase the appropriate goods
Make sure you’re not using too many mousses or gels, as this can lead to a buildup. Also, stay away from “shiny” hair products, which can make oily-prone hair look even greasier. When at all possible, stay clear from these goods.
6. Don’t straighten your hair

Apply the mixture to your hair and scalp.

Select the appropriate shampoo. It’s possible that a shampoo designed for greasy hair is too harsh for everyday use. Choose a gentle shampoo, such as Pure Fiji’s coconut milk shampoo. 10. Do not over-wash
You believe that washing your hair as frequently as possible will reduce the amount of oil in your hair. It will, unfortunately, backfire on you. When the oils in your hair are stripped too regularly, your scalp produces more oil, resulting in greasier hair faster. Try washing your hair every other day if you’ve been doing it every day.
Weather, sweating during a workout, or dancing the night away can convert anyone’s locks from a cascading, glistening, stunning head of hair to a limp, damp-looking, greasy mess. However, by following these ten simple steps and using natural products, you can rest assured that you’re providing your hair with enough of nutrients.
11. Use a sulfate-free shampoo to wash your hair.
Breaking news: Sulfates, which are found in most shampoos, are sudsy detergents that can over clean and dry down your scalp. 1 Your hair may feel squeaky-clean after the first few applications of a sulfate shampoo, but your scalp may overproduce oil to compensate for the dryness. To keep greasiness to a minimum, use gentle, sulfate-free shampoo solutions to cleanse your strands without depriving your scalp or hair of essential oils for strong, healthy hair. Polka believes that “anything clarifying will help control grease and extend your wash.”
It’s crucial to remember that if you’re attempting to avoid stripping your hair when using shampoo (with or without sulfates), the pH of the product is important to consider. “Look for a shampoo with a pH of 5.5 or less,” Emmanuel advises. “This manner, once the shampoo is washed out, the hair will not be as dry, and the scalp will not overproduce oil to compensate for what was lost.”

12. Use Dry Shampoo Between Washes
If you can’t imagine going a day without washing your hair because your strands have accumulated far too much oil, resist the desire and forego your daily hair wash. Although it may seem contradictory, the less you wash your hair, the better. If you’re short on time, spritz some Batiste Dry Shampoo on your roots to keep your hair looking clean (even if it isn’t). If you usually use an unfocused spray of dry shampoo, try this instead: Spray the product at the roots of your hair in small pieces from ear to ear to ensure your entire head is covered. If your roots become excessively greasy, Friedman recommends using dry shampoo right after you’ve washed your hair: “After a fresh blowout, I apply dry shampoo directly to my roots so that as the hour’s pass and your scalp begin to produce oil, the dry shampoo will begin working immediately to combat that oil. And you can reapply as needed over the next few days to keep the oil at bay and your blowout looking as good as new.”
But what if you exercise? Of course, working out at the gym causes your hair to get oilier faster (and will need some freshening up). Thompson recommends using a sweatband to absorb sweat at the hairline in this case. Then, at night, spray your hair with dry shampoo to absorb any excess oil and tie your hair up in a bun on the top of your head. “I only recently started doing this,” Thompson says, “and it definitely helps lengthen the life of a blowout!” If your hair is in dire need of a rinse, bathe it in simply water in the shower and then apply the dry shampoo once it has dried.
13. Try a Texture Spray
Dry shampoo, as wonderful as it is, might cause more harm than good for certain hair types. “Avoid over-dry-shampooing if your hair is continuously oily,” Polko advises. 14. Wear Your Hair Up

A low, loose chignon, tied with a hair tie or clipped in place with a Kitsch small claw clip ($8), is one of our favorites. Alternatively, work with the grease rather than against it by attempting a slick-back wet appearance on the final day before a wash. To do so, mix equal parts gel and cream to make a styling balm that has a soft, touchable hold, then rake the product through your hair with your fingertips. No one will be able to tell that it wasn’t clean, to begin with.
15. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse
We’ll let you cheat a little on day four or five by doing an apple cider vinegar rinse in warm (not boiling) water—hot water may be too drying. Many individuals feel that raw, organic apple cider vinegar, such as Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar, is acidic enough to restore your hair’s pH balance and remove buildup while remaining gentle enough not to rob your strands of key nutrients. It’s also soft enough to use on color-treated hair, according to Thompson. Pour some apple cider vinegar into your hair while you’re in the shower, rub it through your roots, then rinse it out. It will not only remove the oily buildup but will also leave your hair incredibly soft and lustrous. Win-win. To make the ACV mixture, combine 2 to 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with a bottle of water to help balance the acidity.
16. Keep Your Product to a Minimum
Depending on your hair type and texture, you can go as long as you want between washes, but try to go as long as you can (anywhere from every other day to once a week). After that, keep two things in mind: Use as little product as possible, and don’t overdo it with dry shampoo or styling products. “You overwork your scalp, which increases oil production,” Polko explains. Hairspray and lotions can promote buildup on the scalp, which can lead to excess grease, so avoid them if at all possible.
Friedman recommends using only one style product on the scalp and only if your hair is flat and needs volume. “When your hair is damp, the only product you want to use on your roots is a mousse or a root lifter before blow-drying.” Living Proof Full Thickening Mousse ($29) is one of our favorites since it offers hair tremendous hold without leaving a sticky residue or weighing it down over time.
17. Use Clarifying Shampoo
Though it’s recommended to keep product use to a minimum when “training” your hair, if you see buildup over time, apply a clarifying shampoo every now and then to refresh your scalp and style as needed. Gentle shampoos are excellent for everyday usage, but when your hair seems thick or clogged, a clarifying shampoo works to deep clean your scalp, roots, and strands.
18. Exfoliate Your Scalp
Scrubs are fantastic for keeping your hair and skin on your head looking healthy and clean, as well as feeling great on a greasy, itchy scalp: “To remove product buildup and oil, I like to use scalp scrubs. “Blow-drying your hair too much can also cause your hair to produce excess grease,” Polko explains. “Try letting your hair air-dry instead.” Although air-drying takes time, there are techniques to speed up the process. “Rather than applying an oil on your ends after washing, I recommend using a leave-in conditioner on your ends because it keeps your hair looking fresh while reducing dry time.” Touching your hair too much before it’s dry can cause frizz, especially if it’s wavy or curly, so apply your products and leave it alone until it’s completely dry. Kristin Ess Weightless Gloss Air Dry Creme ($10) adds shine and definition to air-dried strands while also minimizing frizz.
20. Take a Vitamin Supplement
“What you put into your body is reflected in your hair, skin, and nails. Supplements are an excellent technique to produce healthier, shinier hair “Polko agrees. It’s worth noting that hair supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA, so take their claims with a grain of salt. Still, some individuals swear by hair supplements, so if you’re interested in giving them a shot, start with one meant to combat an oily scalp. Nutrafol, which is “strong in omega-3s and B vitamins,” is a favorite of Polko’s. Before adding any supplement to your diet, always check your doctor.
