Awesome Benefits of using flaxseed gel hair

Flaxseeds have numerous benefits for natural hair.

It’s the omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseed oil and gel that make them super moisturizing for curly hair.

Using flaxseed gel is a great way to apply essential fatty acids topically.

Let’s get into some quick benefits and I’ll break a few others after these ones:

Flaxseeds are loaded with other nutrients that the hair loves (Such as Vitamin E, copper, magnesium, folate, vitamin B6, zinc, potassium, and protein).

You can also manipulate your curls for twist-outs, braid-outs, and bantu knots.

How long do I boil Flaxseed Gel?

You should boil Flaxseed Gel based on the desired thickness of the gel and based on your ratio of seeds to water.

If you want a thicker gel, boil for up to 10 – 15 minutes.

Something you should remember is that thicker Flaxseed Gels with no added ingredients often result in a flakier hair gel.

Flaxseed gel can last a week or two in the refrigerator without a preservative or a few days if left out on the counter.

Freeze your gel if you want to keep it longer but do not have access to a preservative.

If you’d like to add a preservative that can make it last appx. 6 months

The easiest way to apply flaxseed gel to hair is by using an applicator bottle (you can always use any plastic or glass container).

Here is how to make flaxseed gel:

  1. Place the water and flaxseeds in a pot and bring to a boil. Be sure to stir the mixture to avoid seeds getting stuck on the bottom of the pan, and for a more even texture.
  2. When the flaxseeds form a thick mucus, turn off the heat. Leave the gel to sit 30 min to 1 hour.
  3. After the gel has cooled, pour the gel into the cheesecloth or clean pantyhose and hold it over a container.
  4. Press your fingers against the pantyhose to squeeze the gel into the container. Discard the seeds.

#3 Flaxseed Gel Recipe

  • Water
  • Flaxseeds
  • A pot
  • Pantyhose or a stocking
  • A jar with a lid
  • Essential oils like rosemary, tea tree, or lavender
  • Scented oil such as jasmine

1. Mix together the quarter cup of flax seeds with two cups of water and heat in a small pot until it comes to a boil.

2. Keep an eye on the mix while it’s on the stove because the higher the heat, the faster it will thicken.

3. You can then lower the heat and prepare a strainer. The easiest trick and common way to get the most gel from the flax seed without burning yourself while still saving the seeds is with a stocking.

4. Once most of the liquid or gel is in the jar, take some tongs to gently squeeze out whatever else you can get from the flax seeds.

5. At this point, you have two options: You can either cover the jar and store it in the fridge until you are ready to use it OR you can add a few extra things to really give your gel some kick and maybe even have it last a little longer. Add a teaspoon of vitamin E oil, which helps to preserve the gel and have it last about 3 weeks as opposed to one or two.

Vitamin E oil is also beneficial because it helps to repair and build tissue due to its antioxidant properties.

6. After mixing thoroughly, store your gel in the fridge.

Cooling the gel will allow for your mix to thicken a bit and form more of goo or gel-like consistency.

Helpful Tips on How to use Flaxseed hair gel:

Use on Freshly Washed hair

If you have other product on your hair, the gel cannot penetrate your hair properly. Instead, it will just sit on top of the hair.

Apply on wet hair only.

Water activates the gel and enhances your curl. If you do not use it on saturated hair, the product will not spread as much as it can and your curls won’t be as defined.

Finger detangling or “shingling”

Finger detangling or shingling allows the hair to clump, giving you a more defined Wash n’ Go.

Brushes and combs aren’t the best for defining the curl with gel in the hair.

They usually succeed only in defining the ends of the hair instead of the strand from root to tip.

Work section by section.

To ensure you are distributing the gel, work section by section. If you have finer hair, you can work in larger sections.

Don’t manipulate your hair after you’ve applied gel in a section.

Any manipulation while wet will disturb your curl pattern and hurt your results so let your hair be!

Always keep your flaxseed gel in the refrigerator to preserve the life of the gel.

It expires after about one week, but you can prolong the life of your gel by adding Germaben to the container after the gel has cooled. Y

you’ll need to measure the amount you use to make sure it is only 1%.

Germaben is liquid and antimicrobial, so it is perfect for preserving the life of your DIY gels and conditioners.

Your hair can feel crunchy at a point but it isn’t drying or harmful.

The stiffness provides hold. If you find the flaxseed gel makes your hair too hard, you can experiment by using less or adding softening ingredients to your batch.
