So, What is a protein treatment?
Do you really know what is a protein treatment for natural hair?
I love the fact that our hair is made of protein (called keratin), did you know that? (That’s according to Wikipedia).
So in simple English, a protein treatment for hair loss is the action of adding various products to your hair in order to add protein and strength back into your hair.
Why might you need a protein treatment?
What happens is when you feel that your hair is kind of dry and brittle?
Split ends and curls that are no longer popping and lively could also be a sign that your hair is craving for a homemade protein hair mask.
See when you do all these amazing styles your hair is subject to elements like your environment and nature which can cause damage to your hair.
Simple actions like cleansing and styling can also cause stress to your hair.
In these cases, a protein egg hair treatment for damaged hair can restore the strength back into your hair.
What are the Different Types of Proteins for Natural Hair Growth?
There are two types of proteins but they both have a different kind of effect to your hair.
You must know that before you go ahead and pick a homemade protein hair mask you need to check the current condition of your hair, the intensity of the protein treatment you’re going for or even how frequent will your protein treatments be.
Let’s have a look at the different types of proteins:
- Keratin Protein
- Wheat Protein
This treatment is the most popular because it keeps the hair strong by mending your hair strands which have been broken due to heat and generally chemical damage. It’s the strongest type of protein and comes in a form of Hydrolysed Keratin.
These are moisturizing proteins and are water soluble.
strengthens hair and increases the level of moisture received into the hair.
When you get a mask from any store or you see it being applied into your hair at the hair saloon could be this type of protein masks.
They result in adding hydration and shine into your hair strands.

Since too much of everything is bad, using too often protein treatments could lead to hair breakage, so, use it wisely!
But Why Should Eggs, Yogurts and Coconut milk be used as Protein treatments?
Egg, greek yogurt, and coconut milk are super rich in protein, very high in fats, making it great for moisturizing and strengthening.
Let’s break it down, an egg contains proteins and nutrients that will encourage hair growth and reverse any hair damage (if possible).
It also contains lots of rich fats and protein that can help treat and moisturize your natural hair.
On the other hand, yogurt is a natural hair conditioner that can make your hair soft and reduces frizz.
If you’ve been experiencing dry hair, It prevents dryness and it can reduce hair fall and premature graying of your hair strands.
Last but not least, Coconut Milk repairs split ends and frizziness, resulting in making your hair soft and shiny which will eventually boost hair growth.
Super awesome, right?!
How much is too much when it comes to using protein treatments?
As mentioned in the above sections, too many protein treatments could cause hair to stiffen and break off. It is recommended that women and men with curly hair use protein treatments about once or twice a month not over to process the hair.
Too much of anything, even necessary processes like adding protein to the hair, could turn into a problem and could potentially reverse your progress.
What are some great home protein treatments?
There are many items that are located in your home that can be used as a protein treatment.
If you’re lazy to go to the saloon but you know that it’s time for a protein treatment this is for you.
Here are some great homemade protein hair mask ingredients that you can find actually right now!
Did you know that eggs are rich in protein? but may need to be added to other products because the protein in eggs may be too large to fit into the tiny gaps in your hair follicles.
Don’t forget to rinse any egg protein treatment with cool water else rinsing with warm to hot water will cause the egg to scramble in your hair. (Trust me, no one want’s fried eggs on their head!)
Warnings about eggs:
Try to use a fresh carton of eggs to avoid an unpleasant surprise (the smell) when breaking open the eggs.
Don’t like eggs? Here is an alternative:
If you don’t like the idea of an egg on your hair, other simple treatments to condition your dry or damaged hair is doing a hot oil treatment with olive-rosemary or sesame-ginger oil or an apple cider vinegar rinse.
Avocado is rich in fatty acids and protein treatments with avocado that has been mushed could add moisture to your hair.
Non-fat, plain Greek yogurt strengthens curly strands and adds additional moisture to the hair. It must be a staple product in your protein treatment.
Doing a homemade protein hair mask with greek yogurt should be easy since it’s already ready and the protein should be able to enter the hair follicle easier than most other products.
Raw honey, mayonnaise, and olive oil would also be great products to use in your homemade protein mixture.
This post will help you learn how to use yogurt for hair growth.
How to make a protein treatment for natural hair by yourself.
Now let me show you how to get started with your first protein treatment.
You need to combine as many products as you want into a small bowl.
You can use whatever you have at the moment. Quantity, in this case, doesn’t mean an awesome result!
Apply your preferred mixture (I’ll list some recipes soon).
Cover your hair with a plastic cap or plastic shopping bag and let the mixture sit on your hair for 30-45 minutes.
One thing to remember is to not let the mixture sit on your hair for too long.
Else it may cause your hair to harden and break off (Yikes!).
Once your time is up, rinse the mixture out of your hair with cool to lukewarm water and shampoo/condition like normal.
How to make a protein treatment for natural hair at the saloon.
You can get a keratin treatment at the saloon which doesn’t require anything from your except of your money and time 🙂
What does a keratin treatment do? Keratin treatments fill in the porosity of your hair, as overly porous hair causes tangles, frizz, and breakage.
Since your hair is made up of keratin, what you’re doing is simply adding protein back into your hair, which is often lost due to age and chemical treatments.
What are some great protein treatment products?
There are a few protein treatments that you can purchase from beauty supply stores and online stores:
My favorite is Aphogee Intensive 2 minute keratin treatment. It’s fast, inexpensive and effective. I love it!
Here is a list of some of the best protein treatment products for natural hair:

Let’s look into 9 amazing egg protein treatment for natural hair that you can do on your natural hair:
1.The Basic egg protein treatment for natural hair
What you actually do is you beat one or two eggs.
Apply the egg mixture to clean, dry hair, working from scalp to ends and wait at least 30 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water.
You can follow the water rinse with a shampoo.
The apple cider vinegar (let’s try something different)
Apple cider vinegar helps to remove product buildup that dulls hair, while the argan oil nourishes and softens unruly strands and the rosemary pampers a dry scalp.
To use: In a blender, combine 1/2 avocado, 2 Tbsp argan oil, 10 drops of rosemary essential oil, and 1 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar, and pulse together.
Work the mask through dry hair from roots to tips (if your hair’s oily, skip your scalp). Clip hair in place and let sit for 15 minutes, then rinse and cleanse with shampoo.
Do this at least once a month.
The Coconut Avocado Egg Protein Treatment for natural hair
Mash half an avocado and mix with one egg yolk and enough coconut milk to form a paste.
Work it into the hair from scalp to ends, leave on for at least 30 minutes, rinse and shampoo.
This will add extra shine to your hair and will make the mixture smell better.
The Mayonnaise and avocado
Mayonnaise is made of oil and egg so it’s very moisturizing for your hair.
The high-fat content of avocados makes hair less dry and prone to breakage. Mix two tbsp mayonnaise and half mashed avocado in a bowl until creamy.
Apply this homemade conditioner through your hair concentrating on the ends. For even distribution, use a wide tooth comb.
The Egg and Henna Protein Treatment for natural hair
Henna adds auburn highlights while the egg counteracts the drying effect of the henna.
Combine a beaten egg, 1 teaspoon olive oil, 2 tablespoons honey, 23 ounces henna, 24 drops lavender essential oil and enough lukewarm water to reach the consistency of cake batter.
Work the mixture through your hair, cover it with plastic wrap, and leave on for one to two hours. Rinse and shampoo as described.
This post here will help you learn how to do a mayonnaise hair treatment in depth.
Coconut Milk Homemade Protein Treatment for Natural Hair Growth
Mix 3 tablespoons of coconut milk (30 ml) 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (60 g) ½ banana 1 tablespoon of honey (25 g) 1 tablespoon of olive oil (16 g) with the help of a blender.
Apply on your hair from the root to the tips. Leave on for 1 hour and rinse with plenty of water.
This hair treatment is ideal to do before dyeing your hair, as it counteracts the damage caused by chemicals.
Yogurt Homemade Protein Treatment for Natural Hair
Pour ½ cup of Greek yogurt (135 g) 2 tablespoons of olive oil (32 g) in a bowl and mix until a thick and uniform consistency is obtained.
Moisten the hair and apply the mask from the root to the tips.
Leave on for 30 minutes while giving a gentle massage to the scalp. Remove with plenty of warm water and wash your hair as usual.
Gelatin Homemade Protein Treatment for Natural Hair
Mix 1 bottle of shampoo (350 ml) with ½ pack of grenetina (7 g) perfectly well. Use this mixture 2 or 3 times a month and wash as usual.
Gelatin also encourages growth and brightens your hair.
You will gain a unique shine, with results similar to those of vinegar for hair and helps control the hair with frizz and rebels.
Aloe Vera Homemade Protein Treatment for Natural Hair
Combine 1 cup of hot water (250 ml) 1 teaspoon of gelatin (5 g) 1 tablespoon of aloe gel (15 g) until you get a homogeneous mixture.
Wash your hair and apply the mask. Leave on for 20 minutes and rinse. Repeat the process once a week.
Aloe vera is a plant rich in proteins and amino acids, which is essential for healthy hair , since the hair is made up of a protein called keratin, which needs more protein to help hair growth.
Few Final Tips!
Don’t forget It’s is best to rinse your hair in colder water rather than warmer water. You don’t want to bring out that pungent egg smell and have your hair smell all day.
Try to always use fresh eggs because expired eggs are less potent and they stink!
If you have a problem with that eggy smell, you can follow up the treatment with a nice apple cider vinegar rinse.
Just be careful not to use too much or it might lessen the benefits of the egg mask. A good tip is to mix a tablespoon or less with your shampoo.
