1) triethanolamine (TEA)
What is Triethanolamine?
Triethanolamine, also known as TEA, is a reactionary byproduct of two toxic substances: ethylene oxide and ammonia.
This is used for several purposes in a variety of cosmetics and personal care items. Its main purpose is to balance the pH level of products, but it also helps to emulsify ingredients that usually do not blend well.
This ensures they spread smoothly on skin and hair and prolongs shelf-life.
Additionally, Triethanolamine is a sometimes a foaming agent and adds fragrance to products.
2) Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate
Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate is actually a skin and eye irritant. In both test animals and humans. Even after washing with water it can burn your eyes.
Polysorbate starts out as harmless sorbitol, but then it’s treated with carcinogenic ethylene oxide.
It’s called Polysorbate 20 because it’s treated with 20 “parts” of ethylene oxide. The higher the number, the more ethylene oxide it has been treated with. This substance is then combined with various fatty acids.
The Skin Deep Database rates it as only a “one,” and doesn’t pick up on the risk that it could be contaminated with ethylene oxide, and subsequently, 1,4 dioxane. In addition, it can be laced with heavy metals.
Types of products it’s found in:
Facial cleanser, body wash, toners, moisturizer
4) Tetrasodium EDTA
Tetrasodium EDTA (which stands for ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a water-soluble ingredient used as a “chelator,” which means it binds to certain mineral ions to inactivate them.
Through this action, it can prevent the deterioration of cosmetic and personal care products, as it stops the growth of mold and other microorganisms.
Tetrasodium EDTA also helps maintain clarity, protect fragrance compounds, and prevent rancidity. One of its main uses it to help personal care products work better in hard water.
Fragrances are used in a wide variety of products to impart a pleasant odor, mask the inherent smell of some ingredients, and enhance the experience of using the product. …
Consumer research indicates that fragrance is one of the key factors that affect people’s preference for cosmetic and personal care products.
6) Yellow 5 – tartrazine
Tartrazine is found in a LOT of products, cereals, desserts, snack foods, shampoos and even cosmetics can all contain this harmful colorant. All you have to do is check the labels before you buy!
Certain food additives are dangerous to our children, but who would have thought that the dyes used would be dangerous? I grew up using food coloring in frosting, decorating cookies and cakes…I don’t even know what else my mother used it on. So the fact that artificial coloring is so dangerous to our health was a surprise.
