Dry natural hair can be you worst nightmare, trust me.

Why? Not only your hair is more prone to damage, but it makes your natural hair look dull and frizzy.

The only way to keep your hair from drying out is to pamper your natural hair with conditioning treatments which help seal moisture in.

On the other hand, deep conditioning treatments can be way too expensive to get done regularly, so, today I am sharing with you 3 homemade conditioning treatments that will help keep your natural hair healthy and moisturized.

There are many different types of conditioners available for you to get today ranging from after shampoo conditioners, to leave-in conditioners and even overnight deep conditioning treatments.

Whilst many of these hair conditioners are leave-in products, some of them may need you to do a really good massage to get them to work.

Deep conditioners use stronger, more penetrative ingredients to get deep inside your natural hair follicles.

Is it important to have a good deep conditioner? Yes, here is why:

Having a good deep conditioner is as important just as having a good leave-in conditioner for your natural hair.

If you have natural hair then deep conditioning is really important, especially if you have naturally frizzy or dry natural hair.

If you slack in properly conditioning your hair it can result is uncontrollable frizz, delayed growth and unwanted breakage that could have easily been avoided if an effective daily conditioning routine was put into place.

A hair conditioner not only conditions your natural hair, but also makes it strong, shiny, and smooth.

What Ingredients Should Be Used in A Homemade Deep Conditioner?

There is no specific ingredient that is best for our hair type, but there are certain kinds of ingredients that are more beneficial than others.

Ingredients should be chosen depending on your purpose for doing a deep conditioning treatment.

As the main culprit to breakage on 4c Afro hair is dryness, it is most likely you will be needing ingredients that help combat dryness.

Dry hair is a lightly damaged condition and in most cases, the causes are due to environmental factors, excess styling and lack of proper care.

It’s also possible that the condition or structure of your hair is causing the moisture to escape, which leads to dry hair.

As your hair is made up primarily of a protein called keratin, opt for ingredients that can balance both the protein and moisture levels.

I would personally stick to using mayonnaise, egg whites, avocados, shea butter, coconut milk, yogurt, and lemon juice or grapefruit juice to clarify.

Best Oils For Natural Hair Growth To Use in A Homemade Deep Conditioner for African Hair

I would advise you to stick to using: coconut oil, olive oils, castor oils, moringa oils. As the focus of the conditioner is for growth, also opt for the best essential oils for natural hair growth such as Rosemary oil, Nettle oil, and Burdock Root.

How to Use a Deep Conditioner in Your  Hair
You should aim to apply a deep conditioner on your natural hair at least every 2 weeks. If your natural hair is damaged, aim for every week.

Get that Manageability with Bananas, olive oil, glycerin, and honey

This homemade conditioner improves the manageability of your hair for post-rinse styling. The secret is in the banana, which has a way of minimizing shrinkage and softening the hair when mixed with the other ingredients.

While, glycerin, and honey, which are both humectants, and olive oil, which is known to penetrate your hair, all contribute moisturizing benefits.

Do not be alarmed if you notice a loosening of your coils or curls with this conditioner; the effect is temporary until your next wash day. This recipe is ideal for naturals who want to achieve easier blow-outs or better-stretched styles.

Ingredients:
1 large overripe banana (sliced) OR 7 oz banana baby food
4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 tbsp pure vegetable glycerin
2 tbsp pure honey

Instructions:
Place the sliced banana, extra virgin olive oil, glycerin, and honey all in a blender. Blend the ingredients thoroughly making sure no lumps or banana bits remain.

(Depending on your blender quality, you may or may not have to then sieve the mixture.

Another option is to use banana baby food, though the conditioner may not be as effective.) Apply to hair and let sit for 30–45 minutes under a shower cap.

Wash And Go For Short Natural Hair: How To Get It Right This Time!

The Detangler Avocados, olive oil, shea butter, and apple cider vinegar

This homemade conditioner is lubricating, thick, and heavy, all of which give my kinks slip, moisture, and hang for detangling.

The avocado’s meatiness and fatty acid content contribute to the effectiveness of this mixture.

Additionally, the fatty acids in the olive oil combined with the emollient properties of shea butter add even more lubrication and moisturizing benefits.

Lastly, the acidic pH of the apple cider vinegar helps to flatten the cuticles for easier detangling.  This conditioner is ideal for those with thick, dense hair and major shrinkage.

Ingredients:
1 overripe avocado (sliced)
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup unrefined shea butter
2–3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar

Instructions:
Place the sliced avocado, unrefined shea butter, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), and apple cider vinegar (ACV) into a blender.

(There is no need to melt the shea butter ahead of time.)

Blend all the ingredients thoroughly and add more EVOO, if necessary, until the mixture reaches your desired consistency.

When done, apply to the hair and let sit for 30–45 minutes under a shower cap. Detangle, rinse thoroughly, and style as usual.

Strengthening Coconut oil and honey Conditioner

This conditioner is ideal if you have natural hair that dislikes protein conditioners but needs a bit of strengthening.

The key is the coconut oil, it binds to the hair thus reducing keratin loss.

On the other hand, the honey is a humectant that is also added to the mix to impart moisture retention.

Through this mixture you get moisture and strength.

You will need:
4 tbs of extra virgin coconut oil
2 tbs of pure honey
(depending on hair density or length, you may use two servings of this recipe)

Go ahead and place the coconut oil and honey in a small cup and place the cup in a large bowl of hot water.

You should let the cup to sit in the water for a few minutes until the mixture is warm.

Next, pour the mixture onto freshly washed but towel blotted hair.

Put on a shower cap, and wrap with a towel to prevent the mixture from dripping onto your face.

Let it sit for 20 minutes, then rinse out 80–90% of the conditioner, and style as usual.
