If you check around type 4 coily hair is fine and thin or wiry and coarse, with densely packed coils.

Coily hair may often seem robust, but it is actually the most fragile hair texture! Why? Because it has the fewest cuticle layers to protect it from dryness and elements in general.

We all have hair struggles but queens with type 4 coily hair have some pretty similar coily hair concerns that can be broken into three categories:

  1. Maintaining moisture
  2. Avoiding tangles
  3. Counteracting shrinkage (oh yeah sis!)

Okay now that you know why you feel your hair dry all the time with a tone of tangles and shrinkage like no other let’s take it easy madam!

First of all, what is coily hair and what exactly do you need to know about coily hair?

All About Your Coily Hair

Let’s describe coily hair in a pretty awesome way!

coily hair Can be described as fun, free and filled with volume type of hair.

Our type of hair can add style and definition for women who love to try out new things (Like me! High five if you agree, ha!)…

… simple my queens that just want to rock their natural God-given hair.

The good part? you can ditch the hair spray, because the natural shape will give a ton of volume, without a ton of effort, cool right?

Let’s look into things that make coily hair Amazing!

Things We Love about Coily Hair

It Speaks Volume Volume Volume!!

From what I see other types of hairs don’t really have super duper volum but that’s not the case with our coily hair, with coily hair, volume is rarely an issue.

Despite the fact that we all like that hair that falls on our shoulders (okay if you don’t like that it’s still ) but most coily hair types most of the time stand on their own.

It can also be styled to perfection by using the right hair products so you will rarely ever need hairspray at the roots because your s-shaped and z-shaped patterns do all the work.

Leave a comment saying “Gurl no Hairspray!” if you can relate!

You Cant Get Bored With Style Options!

Wow, There are so many beautiful styles that you can create with coily hair.

From mini braids (take too much time tho!), big braids, dreads, Just the natural you, or a fro, there are numerous ways to style your coily hair and girl you sure will get a compliment for every single style, trust me!

Sunny day? coily hair Cotcha sis!

Now if your scalp is sensitive fear not, coily hair is built to naturally block the sun’s rays from the scalp.

What is the benefit of this? Your scalp won’t overheats during the summer plus it also protects your scalp from those harmful rays and elements. Your beautiful coily hair acts as a natural barrier.

Now that you know why your coily hair is so awesome here are some things you need to do in order to maintain your beautiful coily hair:

How to Maintain Coily Hair

  • It’s all about the products. Coily hair is typically more fragile than curly, wavy, and straight hair, because it has fewer cuticle layers. So, straightening it is not usually the best way to go. But he right hair care products will do wonders. When deep-conditioned, hydrated, and gently treated to perfection, coily hair looks its best.
  • Style it up. Coily hair may be prone to shrinkage, but there are several styles which can lengthen the look of the hair. Small braids, dreads, and even a smoothing treatment can combat shrinkage and give the hair length.
  • Just know the routine. At the end of the day, coily hair just needs to be hydrated and kept well. Keep shea butter, thick oils like almond, argan, and olive oil on hand for deep treatments, and sleep with a silk pillow or scarf (this will keep the hair from getting tangled) to keep coily hair naturally gorgeous.

Coily hair also changes based on the variance of its s-shaped and/or z-shaped patterns. Below are the three types.

Your dense, springy coils are either wiry or fine, and have the circumference of a crochet needle. They are tightly coiled, with a visible S pattern.
  • Use thicker natural emollients like mango and shea butters to maximize your wash-and-go, twist-out, or bantu knot-out style after washing.

Types of Coily Hair

Type 4A Coily: This type has tightly coiled s-curls, and it can range from wiry to finely-textured. The strands are densely packed together, giving it an appearance of thickness.

How to wear it: au naturale. This hair has strong curl definition, so with simple upkeep, it’s easy to let the curls go wild. You can cut it short, keep it long, or style it in any shape you think will naturally flatter your face. These curls were made to be worn just how they came.

Instead of curling or coiling, your hair bends in sharp angles like the letter Z. The curl is tighter and less defined – about the circumference of a pen – with strands that range from fine and thin to wiry and coarse.
  • Pre-poo with coconut oil or castor oil to help retain natural oils in your scalp.

Type 4b Coily: This type of hair has a prominent z-shaped pattern and can range in thickness as well. Several have described it as having a “cotton-like” feel, soft to the touch (but very fragile). This type of hair has up to 75% shrinkage.

How to wear it: short dreads. Did you know that dreads are back in style? Keeping dreads short and stylish is a great way to get a fun look with little maintenance. The matted coils need to be maintained once or twice a week for clean edges. Other than that, dreads can be worn loosely or tied back, with a few strands hanging out for a soft and sophisticated look.

Your densely packed hair is similar to a 4b, but experiences less definition and more shrinkage. The tightly coiled strand texture ranges from super fine, thin and soft to wiry and coarse. It is very delicate.
  • Use a creamy humectant as a leave-in to maximize protection from the elements.

Type 4c Coily: This type of hair is similar to Type 4b, in that it has a z-shaped pattern. Since there are so many zig-zags in the hair, it appears to have one shape.

How to wear it: as big as it gets. This type of hair is meant to be embraced. Since it mostly stands on its own, it’s the perfect candidate for a full-blown afro. This classic hairstyle is a powerful symbol of self-expression, and has been worn by many trendy icons.

If you have coily hair, there are special considerations to make sure your hair stays healthy and beautiful. Whether you are new to being a natural or just looking to tweak your habits, here are a few tips on keeping a successful coily hair care routine.

    1. The most important part of any coily hair care routine is moisturizing. Coils need moisture more than other textures so keeping them moisturized is paramount. Most naturals with coils know the importance of using a daily leave-in conditioner to avoid dryness. A few good ones for coils are Aunt Jackie’s Curls & Coils Quench and Fantasia Curl and Coily Leave In.
    2. Oils are your best friend. While moisture is important in the form of daily products use, natural oils are also essential to the health of your coils. Certain oils can offer moisture that is heavier than most products, such as coconut oil, so it has an easier time penetrating the cuticle, but more importantly, oils help to seal strands. This will keep moisture locked into your coils for soft, healthy hair! A few great oils for sealing coils are almond, argan, and olive which you should apply anywhere from once a week to every night, depending on the state of your hair.
    3. Learning to perfect the wash and go method is a lifesaver. The wash and go will ensure proper cleansing, conditioning, and give you a great style on busy days. Here’s a quick video on how to master this element of coily hair care routine.
    4. Safeguard against breakage as much as possible. Breakage is a real problem for coils since they tend to be thinner. A few things to avoid that make hair more prone to breakage include the overuse of heat tools which weakens the keratin bonds, and brushes that tug at strands while detangling. There are also products that are designed to fortify strands again breakage such as Shea Moisture Anti-Breakage Masque which will help safeguard hair against breakage.
  1. Consider following the LOC method for your coils. This is a must-know routine for all curlies, but especially for naturalistas with coils. It consists of a method leave-in, oil, and conditioner. Find out more about it here,

Scientific Structure of Coily Hair (Type 4)

Coily hair, also known as Type 4, develops its structure from the shape of the cortex. The fibers of the hair are flat, and the flatter the hair shaft gets, the more disulfide bonds occur between hair proteins, making it squiggle in “s” and “z” shapes on the sides of the scalp. Coily hair has strong hooks at the end of the follicle (bulb), which keeps it from growing at an angle. In some cases, hormones and certain medications can change the texture of the hair, making it grow in a different way than originally formed.
