Biotin for Hair Growth is a nutrient that helps to promote hair growth.
Biotin’s hair-growth benefits have been reported in numerous anecdotal accounts. Regrettably, scientific research on the subject is limited. What’s more encouraging is that studies on the benefits of biotin, particularly biotin for hair, have yielded very promising results.
1. Keratin production is enhanced by biotin.
Biotin is required for the production of keratin protein from the proteins in our food. Keratin is the main component of hair. It forms the structure of hair, skin, and nails. It strengthens them and, in the case of hair, helps to prevent breakage and shedding prematurely.
Many protein sources (from both plants and animals) contain biotin, which is quite remarkable.
Find more info about keratin, protein, and the protein-moisture balance, here: Natural Hair Care: Protein and Hair – 7 Questions Answered.
2. Hair follicle growth is aided by biotin.
Hair follicles are found in the dermis, which is the layer of skin beneath the epidermis. The only living hair cells are found in the follicle. (The hair we see growing out of our skin is actually made up of keratinized and hardened dead cells.)
Because of its role in keratin production, biotin has been shown to contribute to the healthy growth and function of the hair follicle.
The hair follicle plays an important role in hair growth phases, rate, and the likelihood of premature hair loss.
3. Biotin is not stored in our bodies.
Biotin is easily excreted (passed out) in urine because it is a water-soluble vitamin. Excess biotin is not stored in the same way that fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin A and vitamin E are. This is why biotin should be consumed on a regular basis.
4. Biotin’s RDA is 30 micrograms.
According to the Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of biotin for adults 19 years and older is 30 mcg (micrograms) (micrograms). For breastfeeding women, the dose rises to 35 mcg.
For comparison, 17.5 mcg of biotin is found in 100 g (or 3.5 ounces) of roasted peanuts.

5. Biotin can be found in many foods.
Biotin is found in a variety of tasty foods. A well-balanced diet will provide you with the recommended 30 mcg per day.
The following are some of the biotin-rich foods.
Biotin-rich animal foods for hair growth examples
Livers de poulet
Lungs of beef
a chop of pork
Breasts of turkey
Examples of biotin-rich plant foods for hair growth
Sweet potatoes are a type of potato that is used
Bananas that are ripe
6. Our gut bacteria make biotin, too!
We produce our own biotin in addition to the biotin we get from food. The gut flora (aka bacteria) in the large intestine is responsible for this. These intestinal helpers are said to produce about the same amount of biotin as we get from food. Cool!
7. Biotin deficiency is extremely uncommon.
Biotin deficiency is a relatively uncommon ailment. Because biotin has a 30 mcg RDA and is found in so many foods, it’s safe to assume you’re getting all the biotin your body requires.
So, who is affected by biotin deficiency?
If you eat plenty of raw egg whites, then you could become biotin deficient. Biotin absorption is blocked by a substance found in raw egg whites.
It is also possible for someone to have a genetic disorder that makes them biotin deficient.
Biotin deficiency can be caused by inflammatory bowel disease, cirrhosis, and excessive alcohol consumption.
Signs of biotin deficiency include a skin rash, brittle nails, and hair loss. This could explain why biotin supplements and hair care products containing biotin are so popular.
The use of biotin for hair loss has been researched. The results of those studies, though not conclusive, show plenty of promise.
Gummies containing biotin
8. Larger doses of biotin are available in supplements.
If you do a quick online search for “biotin supplements,” you will see that they are very readily available. Biotin is available alone or in combination with other nutrients. It also comes as capsules, tablets, and chewy gummies – whichever you prefer.
You’ll also notice that many supplements provide far more biotin than the recommended daily allowance of 30 mcg. In fact, supplements with doses of 10,000 mcg are not uncommon.
There is a general idea that larger dosages of biotin offer protection against hair loss and may even assist with re-growing hair. However, there is a shortage of scientific evidence supporting the benefits of biotin for hair regrowth.
While an overdose of biotin is unlikely (since we excrete it in our urine), if you do decide to take a biotin supplement, keep the following points in mind:
Check the decision with your doctor, first. Your thinning hair or other hair problems could be caused by something other than a biotin deficiency.
Biotin can cause false lab test results.
Some medications can cause biotin to cause problems. Certain medications, on the other hand, may cause biotin absorption to be impaired.
Biotin for hair growth is best obtained through a well-balanced diet of whole foods.
Biotin’s Hair Growth Benefits
9. Biotin is found in a variety of hair-care products.
There isn’t a lot of scientific evidence about how effective biotin-containing hair care products are. However, many users swear by these products. So, what should you do if you’re considering purchasing a biotin-enriched shampoo, hair mask, conditioner, serum, or other product that contains biotin?
Examine the rest of the ingredients. If they’re also good for your hair, it’s worth a shot.
