Hair gel is a lot easier to make than you might guess. Use this quick and easy recipe to whip up a batch. It can be customized to give you just the right amount of hold, and costs just a few pennies to make.

The Gelatin All Natural Gel

Making a batch of hair gel just takes a few minutes, though you will need to let it chill for a few hours before you use it. Make enough to last a couple weeks, so you don’t have to make it too often.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 1/2-1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin (the same kind you cook with)
  • 1 cup warm, distilled water
  • Essential oils (optional)

What You Do:

  1. Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of gelatin in the warm water.
  2. Add more gelatin as needed to reach the desired consistency, and stir.
  3. Cool your hair gel in the refrigerator for about three hours, or until set.
  4. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, if you’d like, and mix well.

To Use:

Simply style your hair as you normally would. Your homemade hair gel can be used on wet or dry hair. This homemade hair gel has a shelf life of around one to two weeks. Keep it in the fridge to maximize its shelf life.

Customize the Hold

This recipe is easy to customize to your styling needs. So, whether you prefer a light or stronghold (or something in between), you should be able to make this recipe work for you. It’s just a matter of tweaking the amount of gelatin until you achieve the right hold. Just select your preferred hold below, and follow the accompanying recipe. It may take a few batches to land on your perfect mix, but with the money you’re going to save, it’s totally worth it.

  • weLight Hold: use 1/2 teaspoon gelatin per cup of water

  • Medium Hold: use 3/4 teaspoon gelatin per cup of water
  • Strong Hold: use 1 teaspoon gelatin per cup of water

Use the ‘light hold’ gel to control frizzy hair. Use the ‘stronghold’ for spiking hair.

Customize the Fragrance

  • Chamomile –  Great for fine and normal hair. Chamomile has a light floral fragrance, and conditions hair.
  • Lavender – Used in many hair car products. Lavender promotes hair growth and balances oils. Perfect for all hair types.
  • Lemon – Great for oily hair because it helps balance oils.
  •  Ylang-Ylang– Promotes hair growth, and is perfect for oily hair. It pairs well with lavender or lemon.
  • Peppermint – Go easy on this scent, and combine it with others, or you may smell like a candy cane. Great for dry hair, and promotes hair growth.

Fragrances for Men

Most men don’t want to smell like a bouquet of flowers, but there are a number of essential oils that have a more ‘manly’ scent. Try these alone, or create your own custom blend.

  • Bay – Sweet and uplifting with a touch of spice. Pairs well with black pepper and juniper.
  • Black Pepper – Spicy and sporty. Pairs well with marjoram and sandalwood.
  • Copaiba Balsam – Woody and rustic. Pairs well with cypress and sandalwood.
  • Sandalwood – Sweet, woody and long-lasting. Pairs well with bergamot and black pepper.
  • Velvetier – Deep, earthy and uplifting. Pairs well with cinnamon and sandalwood.

Fragrances for Kids

If you’re making this hair gel for your kiddos, consider using an essential oil blend that contains tea tree oil. Bugs don’t like it, so it’s a good way to protect your kids from lice when you send them off to school.

Tips for Making DIY Hair Gel

  • Store your hair gel in small squeeze bottles. Use a funnel to get the gel into squeeze bottles, and store it in the refrigerator between uses to prolong its life.
  • Label the bottles. Be sure to label the bottles with the fragrance and date, so no one mistakes your hair gel for food.
  • Need more or less hair gel? Simply maintain the ratio in the recipe and you can make as much or as little as you need.

2. Chia Seed Gel for Natural Hair

Chia seeds contain protein, calcium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, niacin, potassium and thiamine; vitamins and minerals that help strengthen hair.

19 best natural hair products for fine hair

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of chia seeds like Viva Naturals Organic Chia Seeds or BetterBody Foods Organic Chia Seeds
    4 cups of distilled water
2 tablespoons of castor oil or sweet almond oil
10 drops of vitamin E oil
10 drops of lavender essential oil or vanilla essential oil

Directions

  • Mix the chia seeds and distilled water in a pot
Cover and let the mixture sit overnight
The next morning, place the pot on the stove and heat up for 10 – 15 minutes
Stir once, remove and strain through a piece of cheesecloth or colander like this one. Discard the chia seeds.
Add the vitamin E oil, lavender essential oil or vanilla essential oil, castor oil or sweet almond oil and stir thoroughly with a whisk.
Set the mixture aside to cool for a bit then pour into a clean and sterilized bottle. I use an empty glass bottle.

3. Flaxseed Gel for Natural Hair

Flax seeds contain omega-3, vitamin B1, selenium, manganese, and copper, which help nourish hair.

There are two kinds of flax seeds, brown and golden. You can buy either one but the brown variety has more nutrients.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of flax seeds like Terrasoul Organic Golden Flax Seeds or Food to Live Organic Flax Seeds
    4 cups of distilled water
2 tablespoons of castor oil or grapeseed oil
10 drops of vitamin E oil
10 drops of lavender essential oil or vanilla essential oil

Directions

  • Pour the flax seeds and distilled water into a pan.
Bring the pan to a boil until white sediment starts rising to the top. Watch the pot though. If you boil the seeds too long, it will be impossible to separate the gel from the seeds.
You should have enough gel within 20 minutes.
Remove the pan from the stove and immediately strain through a piece of cheesecloth or colander. You will need to really squeeze the cheesecloth or stir in the fine mesh colander to get most of the gel.
Add the vitamin E oil, lavender essential oil or vanilla essential oil, castor oil or grapeseed oil and stir thoroughly
Once cool, pour into the glass bottle and refrigerate.

Note: Flaxseed gel can be stored in the freezer and reused later on to make more gel. I use a batch up to three times before discarding.

4. Okra Gel for Natural Hair

Okra aka Lady Fingers contains potassium, vitamins A, C B & K, folic acid, and calcium. Okra also contains amino acids that make hair softer and easy to detangle.

Okra is used to make soup where I come from. As a kid, I didn’t like the soup and every time my mother made it, I would bellyache about the weird slimy texture. She usually rolled her eyes and told me I wasn’t going to bed unless I ate it. lol.

How to Use Homemade Hair Gel for Natural Hair

You can use your homemade hair gel in several ways for hair and skin. Below are the top ways naturalistas use their homemade hair gel:-

  • Curl definition after your wash and go. Because these gels are all-natural, they cannot dry out the hair so apply as much as you like to define your curls.
