The Ultimate 4a Hair Care Regimen Strategy
The Ultimate 4a Hair Care Regimen Strategy

You might ask, why do you need a  4a hair care regimen? Because knowing your hair texture has the benefit of trying stuff that other ladies with similar curls like you have tried.

So let’s get into the basics in order to help you know if you have 4a hair!

What Is 4A Hair?

You can know by checking if your curls have an S shape to them. 4A hair has an ‘S’ shape and is tightly coiled.

These coils are quite defined and are the width of a pencil.  4A hair retains moisture well but is still prone to dryness.

It is tighter than those 3C curls.

4A hair has a well-defined curl pattern, which is why most women choose a wash n’ go look. Let’s get into the basics of what you need to do to better take care of your 4A hair.

I’ll break it down into the important stuff:

  1. Cleanse
  2. Condition
  3. Detangle
  4. Moisturize
  5. Seal
  6. Treatments
  7. Oils
  8. Styling

Let’s break each section into easy bites for you!

Cleanse

When it comes to keeping your hair and scalp clean is good to use a cleansing shampoo.

A shampoo is meant to lift the hair cuticle, break up oil and dirt, and suspend it so it can be rinsed away.

Shampoos make sure that your hair is clean without stripping it of moisture. You can also use sulfate-free shampoos.

Don’t wash your kinky hair every day. Shampooing every day can strip your hair of its natural oils.

How To Master The Lco Method For Low Porosity Hair

Use a cleansing conditioner to cleanse your hair without stripping it of its moisture.

Use shampoos that are specially made for damaged hair as curly hair dries out fast.

Limit the number of times you wash your hair in a week. Try not to wash it more than twice a week.

So when you use shampoo, the focus should be on our scalps, since that’s where the dirts at.

Apply the product to your roots and scalp, scrub with the fingertips, and the lather will make its way down your hair.

Recommended cleansers:

Use Apple Cider Vinegar to clean your hair

The acetic acid in ACV removes the build-up of hair products from your hair and imparts shine to it. Use it after shampooing and before conditioning your hair.

Condition

Conditioning the hair closes the cuticle, making it smooth, slippery and easier to comb through. A conditioner is supposed to coat the hair.

I love this conditioner: Aussie Moist Conditioner

Leave-In Conditioner
Leave-in conditioner is your savior that keeps your hair moisturized and fresh until the next time you wash your hair.

Detangle

Your conditioner should be moisturizing and have a good slip so that knots will detangle easier and quicker.

A good conditioner to try is TGIN Replenishing Conditioner.

If you don’t detangle your hair well you will end up detangling, even more, the next time!

Untangling your hair with a detangling product will prevent breakage.

You can detangle your hair in sections because this prevents breakage and damage.

Detangle your hair by running your fingers through it. If you want to comb your hair, use a wide-toothed comb to do so.

Detangle your hair when it is wet as it’s easier.

Remember, brushing natural hair can lead to hair loss.

Moisturize

If you have kinky hair, moisturization is a priority. Your hair can be prone to dryness, which leads to hair breakage and damage.

The natural oil from your scalp cannot coat the entire hair strand due to its shape. So, moisturize your hair regularly.

Recommended Moisturizers:

When searching for a moisturizing product, water must be pretty high up in the ingredients list.

Many moisturizers also contain vitamins and oils that can be soaked into the hair and scalp.

Seal

You must use an oil over all that moisture to keep it in!!

Sealing ensures that the moisture you put into your hair stays there. Moisture is lost when the cuticle is raised and water leaves the hair.

By laying a sealant on top of the hair, moisture is locked in, keeping your hair soft and shiny all day!

Recommended sealants:

Many popular ingredients in natural hair products are great for adding moisture to your hair.

You can even add your favorite oil to the spray bottle of water and knock out steps 3 and 4 at the same time!

Treatments (aka deep conditioning)

Deep condition your hair. Your hair health depends on it.

Curly hair gets dry faster than straight hair due to its coils. Deep conditioning your hair helps moisturize your hair.

Apply conditioner to your hair just before you get into the shower and cover it with a shower cap.

The steam produced from the hot water will help keep the moisture in your hair. Rinse afterward with water.

Natural hair that has not been processed (color, relaxer, etc) usually don’t lack protein, but the curlier the hair, the more moisture it needs.

So to start off, try one of these tasty deep conditioning treatments.

This step of your healthy regimen should always be done to clean hair, so all the nutrients and benefits of the treatment are received.

Protein Treatments

Protein masks or treatments contain high levels of nutrients and proteins that help to strengthen and restore curls.

You can get protein hair masks at a pharmacy or a local beauty store.

If you don’t know if you need one check this post out.

Oils (Extra oils to add to your regimen)

Using moisturizers is a must if you’re natural. Quality oils will strengthen, protect, and stimulate your scalp to grow hair.

You can use the oils as a healthy part of the LOC method, and you can add any of the oils to your shampoo and conditioner bottles.

Here are a few awesome oils to try:

  • Coconut Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Jamaican Black Castor Oil
  • Avocado Oil
  • Almond Oil
  • Peppermint Essential Oil
  • Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Let’s break each one of them down:

Coconut Oil
Massaging coconut oil on your hair can help boost scalp circulation. More oxygen and nutrients are sent to hair follicles which, in turn, helps stimulate growth.

Coconut oil has natural antioxidants and nutrients, such as vitamin E, vitamin K, and iron.

Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil moisturizes your hair follicles without leaving behind any residue. It also helps the hair cells reproduce and is a great hair conditioner.

It contains vitamins B and E and minerals such as silicon, copper, and zinc. It is antibacterial and antifungal, which keep dandruff at bay.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil (love it)
Castor oil contains omega-9 and omega-6 fatty acids that improve blood circulation to the scalp and encourage hair growth.

They also strengthen roots and nourish thinning hair.

Avocado Oil
Avocado oil improves hair growth and It contains oleic acid that moisturizes the scalp and vitamin D that is crucial for new hair follicles.

It also provides deep moisturization and fights dandruff – thanks to the monounsaturated acids.

How to Care At Night for your 4A Natural Hair

Make sure you cover your hair with a scarf at night to protect it from damage. Use a silk or satin bonnet or pillowcase. This prevents frizz and lengthens the lifespan of braids.
