We’ve seen a few beauty bloggers and influencers discuss the benefits of rice water for hair and how to utilize it both naturally and synthetically. However, among the Yao women of China, who have very long hair, this is a traditional ritual that is still practiced. They swear by rice water to increase their hair growth and overall wellbeing. Rice water is now a common element in a variety of hair care treatments. We decided to seek a fast fact-check with an expert because the market and beauty industry are praising this substance. Dr. Kalyani Deskhmukh, a dermatologist at Traya Health, had the following to say.

Is Rice Water Actually Good For Hair? How?

“A few years ago, rice water for hair became a fashionable trend. It’s been used to grow long, thick, and straight hair in some South Asian communities. Although rice water includes 70% to 80% carbohydrate, it is high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Inositol, the most effective component, is thought to prevent hair loss and increase hair growth. The concentration in handmade rice water, on the other hand, would be insufficient, especially now that inositol pills are available. Rice water is thought to aid in the prevention of aging, oxidative damage, detangling, gloss, and volume. There is, however, no scientific evidence that it promotes hair growth. Like any other ‘dadi maa ke nuske,’ the sole evidence is anecdotal. “However, there’s no harm in trying it out as a fun DIY experiment,” Dr Deskhmukh says.


What Is The Best Way To Use Rice Water To Get The Most Out Of It?

Today, there are a plethora of tips and DIY recipes for incorporating this powerful component into your hair care routine. However, because there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution in the world of beauty, we discovered the dermat-approved (universally) best technique to utilize rice water for hair. “It can be eaten raw or fermented.” In either instance, be careful to properly rinse the rice to clean it. Then soak it for 30 minutes or boil it for a day or two and let it ferment. After you’ve rinsed your hair with shampoo, apply it. It’s great if you use it the same way you’d use a conditioner. “Yes, because rice water hasn’t been clinically proven to have any benefits, nor has it been formulated to perform a function in hair care.” Anyone experiencing hair loss should see a dermatologist to determine the root cause of their problem and receive a holistic treatment plan. This will include clinically proven solutions, root-cause treatment, and dietary and lifestyle changes to promote hair health,” Dr Deskhmukh suggests. While there’s no harm in using rice water for hair on a regular basis, don’t expect miraculous results.


How Can Rice Water Be Incorporated Into A Hair Care Routine?

“Like we said before, it’s just an after-shampoo rinse.” Some people also use it as a spray, but this may not be as effective due to the lower quantity and poor absorption, according to Dr. Deskhmukh. Rice water can also be used as a leave-on mask. Simply soak your locks and scalp in rice water and leave it on for 30 minutes before thoroughly washing it off. If it has to, the absorption of water in your scalp could boost hair growth as well as provide your mane luster and smoothness.

Who should avoid drinking rice water?

“It should not be used by anyone with low porosity hair.” Fermented rice water can be acidic, causing hair damage. Excessive use might cause stiffness, especially in dry hair.
