What is Protective styling?
If you’re natural or just a woman in general then protective styling is a term you should be hearing on a daily basis. From what I know when you’re focusing on healthy hair growth protective styling is a good path to follow.
Your hair can get tired of many and different styles so protective styles allow your hair to rest from daily physical or chemical manipulation (hopefully you’re natural or transitioning).
What I love about protective styles is the fact that they tuck the majority of your hair strands safely and that protects it.
Isn’t Protective Styling difficult?
It all depends on the style you are going for. A true protective style is a style that protects the ends of your hair and by that way, it helps decrease the shedding, tangles, and most importantly breakage.
A protective hairstyle simpy hides the ends for your hair from exposure but should leave them in a detangled state.

How do you care for your hair while it’s in a protective style?
Although this depends on the style you decide to go for there are some pretty basic practises you can follow when it comes to caring for your protective style.
Here are few of them:
Moisture Baby Gurl!
Once you keep your hair in a protective style you will find out that you might not have to use moisturizers as often as normal.
Nevertheless, you should not neglect moisturizing your natural hair.

So how do you moisturize your hair in a protective style?
Simply use moisturizers and oils like Jamaican Black Castor Oil or you could go for lighter oils or serums as well to prevent dry and brittle hair.
Is Your Protective Style Clean?
If you don’t take care you can get lots of dirt, grease, and product when your hair is in a protective style (even when it’s not you could still experience that with product overload etc), so wash it regularly.

When Are you Taking Your Protective Style Down?
If you keep your protective style for too long it could lead to hair damage, tangling, and hair loss, yikes! We all know we should allow our hair to rest from over styling but sometimes we should give our hair a break from protective styles as well!
Where is Bobby? Bobby Who? Bobby Pin!
If you aren’t using bobby pins then gurl listens… they are a girl’s best friend, no joke! Thank God I do know how to twist or braid my hair when I can’t find some bobby pins but if you don’t then you should have them around.
Are Protective Styles for You?
I believe protective styles could do good for everyone with curly or kinky hair.
Why? Your hair needs to rest every once in a while. But if you are experiencing these few points you should consider trying some protective styles:
- Is your hair prone to breakage? Then you can reduce that by trying some protective styles!
- What’s the weather like over there? If you live in a cold, windy, highly-polluted, or harsh environment, Your hair could get some rest from the harsh environment.
- Struggling to style every day? Then why don’t you take a break and get a protective style?!
What Are the benefits of protective hairstyling?
- You protect your hair from the elements like rain, wind, sun etc.
- You somehow get to maintain your hair and keep the moisture in.
- I love this one, you get to retain your length! (Who doesn’t love that?!)
- You update your style and get a fresh look!
So now that you have an idea about protective hairstyles for natural hair growth let’s get into the styles!
