What is Protective styling?
If you’re natural or just a woman in general then protective styling is a term you should be hearing on a daily basis. From what I know when you’re focusing on healthy hair growth protective styling is a good path to follow.
Your hair can get tired of many and different styles so protective styles allow your hair to rest from daily physical or chemical manipulation (hopefully you’re natural or transitioning).
What I love about protective styles is the fact that they tuck the majority of your hair strands safely and that protects it.
Isn’t Protective Styling difficult?
It all depends on the style you are going for. A true protective style is a style that protects the ends of your hair and by that way, it helps decrease the shedding, tangles, and most importantly breakage.
A protective hairstyle simpy hides the ends for your hair from exposure but should leave them in a detangled state.

How do you care for your hair while it’s in a protective style?
Although this depends on the style you decide to go for there are some pretty basic practises you can follow when it comes to caring for your protective style.
Here are few of them:
Moisture Baby Gurl!
Once you keep your hair in a protective style you will find out that you might not have to use moisturizers as often as normal.
Nevertheless, you should not neglect moisturizing your natural hair.

So how do you moisturize your hair in a protective style?
Simply use moisturizers and oils like Jamaican Black Castor Oil or you could go for lighter oils or serums as well to prevent dry and brittle hair.
Is Your Protective Style Clean?
If you don’t take care you can get lots of dirt, grease, and product when your hair is in a protective style (even when it’s not you could still experience that with product overload etc), so wash it regularly.

When Are you Taking Your Protective Style Down?
If you keep your protective style for too long it could lead to hair damage, tangling, and hair loss, yikes! We all know we should allow our hair to rest from over styling but sometimes we should give our hair a break from protective styles as well!
Where is Bobby? Bobby Who? Bobby Pin!
If you aren’t using bobby pins then gurl listens… they are a girl’s best friend, no joke! Thank God I do know how to twist or braid my hair when I can’t find some bobby pins but if you don’t then you should have them around.
Are Protective Styles for You?
I believe protective styles could do good for everyone with curly or kinky hair.
Why? Your hair needs to rest every once in a while. But if you are experiencing these few points you should consider trying some protective styles:
- Is your hair prone to breakage? Then you can reduce that by trying some protective styles!
- What’s the weather like over there? If you live in a cold, windy, highly-polluted, or harsh environment, Your hair could get some rest from the harsh environment.
- Struggling to style every day? Then why don’t you take a break and get a protective style?!
What Are the benefits of protective hairstyling?
- You protect your hair from the elements like rain, wind, sun etc.
- You somehow get to maintain your hair and keep the moisture in.
- I love this one, you get to retain your length! (Who doesn’t love that?!)
- You update your style and get a fresh look!
So now that you have an idea about protective hairstyles for natural hair growth let’s get into the styles!
This style is such a long style! Since I was young I would see everyone rock this style so it’s something basic for anyone that want’s a change.
A good thing about this style is that you can rock it in a bob or super long and still have an awesome look!
From most of the protective hairstyles for natural hair, Havana twists stand out the most to me. These twists are made from a variety of twists and turn in your natural hair.
If you always loved thick hair this is a great solution for your hair!
Learn how to make some here:
Beautiful Head Wraps
Can we appreciate the colorful African prints? Rocking a colorful head wrap is another great way to keep your hair covered while having to do minimal work as you get ready to start your day.
By that way you protect your hair and keep it stylish at the same time, woohoo!
Head Turning Faux Locks
From what I see the faux locs hairstyles is one of the most protective of all the protective styles. All of your hair except your roots will be safely wrapped inside of the braiding hair.
So none of your hair will be exposed to the elements that you’re trying to avoid.
The Natural Flat Twist Style
This is probably one of the most common protective styles because this style is a neat way to add a protective style to your hair life.
They lookalike cornrows, but are faster and easier to do, something that’s user friendly for newly naturals!
The Crochet Twists Hairstyle
There are a few care tips you should know about if you fancy going for something like this beautiful crochet twists look.
When you decide to try this look you should know that there are some things you need to do in order to maintain this beautiful style.
Using a silky or satin scarf over your head at night will help you keep your hair from frizzing up.
A great way to go about it is to air dry your hair instead of using heat tools.
Lastly, Oils works great with this style so apply some oil to your scalp to keep this style looking fresh from beginning to end
The Bantu Knots Hairstyle
I love this style! This is one of the traditional African hairstyles! They always look amazing and do an awesome job of protecting your natural hair. they also create some pretty amazing curls once they are taken down.
Jumbo Marley Twists
If you are a twists lover then you will like to give this style a try. A great thing with Marley twists is that they can be installed quickly and the take-down process is fairly easy.
Crochet Braids Style
We all know that crochet braids are on the top of the list of protective styles, why? They give you the style you aim to go for without taking super long hours.
Box Braids Hairstyle
If you are looking for a style that will also give you some length then box braids is the right style for you.
The beauty of box braids can be seen in any way you decide to get them.
If you properly take care of them they can protect your hair while you grow it and you will still look amazing!
The Fulani Braids Hairstyle
This hairstyle is for the bold women that love style and fashion. This style is a combination of flat cornrows, beads and braids which makes the style look amazing on any woman. Excellent for summer days!
The Twist Updo Hairstyle
Although I don’t really do many updos they are a great way to protect your natural hair and they are also comfortable and easy to remove.
If you compare them to those long braids I mentioned above, updos will ensure that you won’t get hair in your face as much as the other styles plus it will give you a sense of classiness.
Ombre Single Braids
We mentioned single braids above but let’s face it, they can get boring with time. So why not play with the coloring and style?! Lovely look!
The Wig Style
Although I am not a fun of wearing wigs, this style is for those that doesnt have time for styling or for those that have some serious hair and scalp issues.
A good thing about this style is that it’s the easiest way to keep your natural hair covered while the rest of you looks fresh and taken care of.
Fold and Tuck Protective Hairstyle
Although this style looks for the 50’s it’s perfect for those that love volume and all those bouffants, and pompadours kinda styles.
It sure is not for the faint of heart, but when it’s rocked well it look captivating!
This style is for those that love the side swept look then this is a style you should try. You can always add and play with the colors to make it look awesome!
Senegalese Twists Hairstyle
This style is known also as rope twists. In general Senegalese twists are a pretty easily worn protective style that most of the time use Marley hair, Kanekalon hair, and also Toyokalon hair.
Nubian Twists Protect Style
I’ve not seen many rocking this style but the Nubian twists use a special type of hair to create a mix between a kinky twist, a faux loc, and a curl.
If you have a closer look, the twists are like long springs and are easy to style and wear for all lengths of hair.
Jumbo Pony Braid
This style can be styled in multiple ways. As a regal chignon, or just let it be! All that is needed is a jumbo braid of hair, and some gel and edge control, this totally glam look can be achieved, (even without a stylist’s help!).
Classic Faux Bun Protective Style
This style looks so classy to me! This is a very simple look but sometimes simple things are the best.
Double Halo Braid with Added Hair Protective Style
simple because the braids are made entirely out of Kanekalon hair.
All that’s required after braiding them in is to pin them in place! You’re done! Don’t forget to accessorize them with some nice earrings!
