The Easy Pre Poo For Hair Growth Formula That Works!
This simple and easy formula will help you learn how to do a pre poo for hair growth right away!
But before we dive into it let me take you through what’s a pre poo and why it can help you with your hair growth.
What is a Pre-poo Queen?
In order for you to understand it best let me say that a pre-poo is something like a pre-shampoo treatment.
Oh yeah, it is similar to a hot oil treatment, but you apply it before shampooing your natural hair.
Since shampoos tend to strip your hair from their natural moisture and oils pre-poo’s are used as an extra step in natural hair care regimens to provide a shield that.
Pre-poo treatments usually consist of a water-based conditioner, oil, or a DIY blends that you then apply to your hair before washing it.
Now for my Queens that don’t have the time, there are also a lot of already made pre-poo treatments on the market so fear not!
Now that you know what a pre poo is let me give you some benefits of pre-pooing your hair before washing it:
You can argue that pre-poos are not necessary, but there are so many benefits you can reap from doing this extra step, such as
- Hydration & Moisture Retention
- Reduce the pH of the shampoo
- Improved Styling
- Strengthens Hair
- Less Breakage
- Hair is Easier to Detangle
Difference between a Pre-Poo and Deep Conditioner
This treatment is a pre-poo, and not a deep conditioner because it’s purpose is not to mend cracks and flaws from damaged hair, but to prevent moisture from escaping while adding extra moisture to your hair, during your wash day routine.
BASIC PRE- POO STEPS
1.) Section Hair Into 4 Sections
2.) Add Pre-poo of choice to hair
3.) Massage a liberal amount of your pre-poo directly into the scalp (optional)
4.) Detangle each section thoroughly.
5.) Add pre-poo to ends of your hair
6.) Create a single braid or twist
7.) Repeat the same steps on the rest of your hair
8.) Cover your head with a shower cap and you’re done
The Benefits of Oiling Hair Before Shampooing
Oils such as coconut oil and can penetrate the cuticle and significantly reduce cuticular damage, keeping the hair from expanding excessively when wet according to the Journal of Cosmetic Science (source).
As you shampoo your hair, the shampoo lifts oil from the surface of your hair. For many people, they are left with their hair feeling as if it has been stripped.
Here is where pre-poo comes in! Pre-poo treatments create oily hair or a greasy hair feeling.
In most cases, a single shampoo application will not remove all of the oil. As a result, the hair will not feel stripped.
It’s important to note that you can use pre-poo for transitioning hair as well as natural hair.
What Should Be Used for Pre-Poo?
While we prefer to use coconut oil for pre-poo treatments, you can use your favorite hair oil if you’ll willing to do a little trial and error.
Just remember to consider the needs of your hair and then react accordingly.
The 5 Step to a Simple Pre-poo!
Prepoo is a step you MUST follow before every wash day to infuse moisture and protect hair strands prior to shampooing.
It is highly recommended the use of penetrating oils which easily absorbs into our hair strands i.e Coconut or Olive oil.
In the video above she used Kentaste Coconut Oil and Aloe Vera Gel.
1. Pick A Penetrating Oil
Choose a penetrating oil or an oil mix with one, this oil will not only protect your hair strands on the outside, but it will also penetrate into the cuticle layers.
This will offer nourishment, malleability and more moisture to your hair even after it’s washed, providing a less stripping experience.
You shouldn’t wet your hair because your hair can only take so much in, and if it has water it will take less oil in which will offer less protection to your hair.
Here are some great options for a penetrating oil:
- Olive Oil. …
- Ucuuba Butter.
- Avocado Oil.
- Babassu Oil.
- Camellia Seed Oil.
- Castor Oil.
- Sunflower Oil
2. Apply On Dry Hair
The main goal of a pre-poo is to protect our hair from the cleansing effects of a shampoo, which completely removes sebum from our scalp and hair strands and leaves them dry.
Getting into the habit of doing a regular pre-poo will help protect the hair during the washing routine.
Although some people may want to have their hair wet or damp, the best way to do it is on dry hair.
When making an oil or oil mixture pre-poo on wet hair the water will repel any oil you apply to it, it will sit on top of the water and work more as a sealing agent, gliding through and perhaps offering a less protective action on the hair once the hair is cleansed.
3. Leave it Overnight…
Some oils such as Extra virgin olive oil takes some time before they penetrate through the hair strands so leaving it overnight might be the solution for you!
Some penetrating oils take longer than others and if you want to profit in on them leave them there for longer, preferably do it the night before your washing day.
By doing so pre-pooing won’t feel so much like extra work.
..Or Heat it up Sis!
Heat, when well managed, can work wonders on our natural or transitioning hair.
Start by applying a little bit of heat to your pre-poo treatment which can help the layers of your hair to open and let the oils in with ease.
There are several ways you can add some heat such as sitting under a dryer etc, and it will help you.
In case you don’t have time, forget or just prefer to do your pre-poo and wash routine in one go.
5. Don’t skip the Scalp Massage!
You should apply some oil on your finger pads and gently massage them on your scalp.
Be careful to not overdo it with oil as you can clog pores. You can as well add a few drops of peppermint or rosemary essential oil and take advantage of the scalp massage to stimulate those hair follicles that can lead to hair growth, yay!
Wash it off and proceed with your regular wash routine!
