Women lose their hair for the same reasons men do, according to a widespread hair loss myth. “However, the pattern of FPHL differs from that of male pattern hair loss,” says Francesca J. Fusco, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. “It’s usually diffuse, frontal, or temporal, and it’s passed down through female relatives.” While male pattern hair loss has received far more attention than female pattern hair loss, we do know that it is at least partly genetic and linked to androgen hormones, particularly dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In other words, hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors other than genes, such as stress, food, and other lifestyle variables.

“Hair loss can be caused by significant psychosocial stress,” says Dr. Zeichner. Stress causes hairs to enter the “resting” phase, in which they all fall out at once. “Protein is essential for healthy hair,” explains Dr. Fusco. “Good sources include lean meat, fish, chicken, and legumes. The good news is that this form of hair loss can be reversed with the right diet and treatment.” Biotin and zinc deficiency has also been linked to hair loss, while magnesium is required for good hair growth.
Consider taking a multivitamin.
According to Dr. Zeichner, taking a natural vitamin supplement meant to promote hair growth, as well as multivitamins, can assist. How to camouflage losing hair
It could take months for your hair to regrow (and truthfully, it may not grow back at all). In the interim, pay a visit to your hairdresser to lessen the appearance of hair loss. A good haircut and a few simple styling tips can easily fool the eye into thinking your hair is fuller. “Long or short layers can make a huge difference,” Dr. Fusco explains. “To give your hair a lift, change your part periodically, and use volumizers and dry shampoos.”
Batiste Dry Shampoos ($6; amazon.com) are great for adding volume to your hair. Trimming even a couple of inches off your hair will instantly enhance volume, remove the additional weight of longer hair, and help conceal any thinning areas. If you don’t want to go shorter, layer your hair to frame your face and hide fine hairlines.
According to Dr. Fusco, you can conceal thinning spots with spray-on root touchup treatments or even eyeshadow. For a quick repair, use Madison Reed Root Touch Up ($30; ulta.com).
