The Advantages of Rice Water for Hair
Rice is one of the most widely consumed grains on the planet. It’s high in folate, a B-vitamin that’s best known for treating anemia and is crucial for the formation of the neural tube during pregnancy. What does this mean in terms of encouraging healthier hair? Rice water is “laden in vitamins, amino acids, and other trace elements (zinc, magnesium, vitamins B and C, etc.) all of which can help treat the scalp and thicken hair,” according to Karen Flowers, licensed cosmetologist, certified trichologist, and creator of Curl House.
The two-ingredient treatment binds the hair with protein, which can help reverse dryness and damage, thanks to the starch in rice water.
How to Care for Your Hair with Rice Water
Because rice water functions as a protein treatment, you’ll want to use it on a regular basis in the same way you use protein-based masks and treatments to avoid brittle, dry hair. If you’re new to protein treatments or aren’t sure if your hair can benefit from one, color-treated, relaxed, heat-styled, and natural hair all benefit from a protein boost.
It’s best to leave this treatment on for up to 20 minutes. Adjust the length of time you leave it on if your hair is crunchy after you rinse it. Apply a hydrating deep conditioner after using any protein treatment, including rice water. Any hair type requires hydration and strength, and finding the proper balance might take time, so don’t give up if your hair doesn’t like protein straight away.
Rice water can be used for up to a week after it’s been produced, as long as it’s kept refrigerated.
