Home remedies that promote natural hair growth have become very popular in the natural hair community. If you would like to try using simple home ingredients to experiment with natural DIY hair remedies such as Rice water, Onion Juice, Aloe Vera among others, then this article is for you.

I have natural 4C hair and I have found that natural home remedies have worked better for my hair. In this article I will cover the most commonly used home remedies for natural hair growth. Below is the detailed list.

1. Rice Water

Before you think of tossing that Rice Water away, think again because you will be shocked to learn that Rice Water is a very effective home remedy for growing natural hair.

Research on hair care practices show that that women in China, Japan and South East Asia have used rice water as a hair treatment for centuries. (1)

Rice water contains inositol an ingredient that has protective and beautifying effects on hair. (2) Rice is also packed with Vitamins and minerals that are required for hair growth such as: Vitamins B & E, Amino Acids and antioxidants.

Benefits of rice water include: (i) boosting hair growth (ii) detangling hair (iii) smoothening the hair cuticles and adding shine and (iv) strengthens the hair when used correctly.

There are several methods you can use to prepare rice water but the most effective method is to ferment the rice water by soaking some rice in water for up-to 48 hours.

Fermented rice water contains more antioxidants than plain rice water and therefore it is preferred for hair growth.

2. Onion Juice

Well, this could be the last thing on your mind when it comes to hair growth. However, onions are a magic not only in promoting overall health but also in hair care.

When applied to the hair, onion juice helps in minimizing thinning and breakage of hair because it is packed with beneficial nutrients.

Onions are packed with nutrients such as vitamins, fibre and minerals such as potassium. Onions are a wonderful source of antioxidants which makes it an excellent choice for hair growth. Antioxidants also help reverse premature graying and may delay the graying of hair.

One study done on hair loss demonstrates the possibility of onion juice in treating alopecia, a hair loss condition. Results from the study showed that onion juice was effective in hair regrowth and was particularly more effective in men. (3)

Onions are rich in Sulphur which helps in the strengthening hair and in regeneration of hair follicles. Sulphur also helps improve blood circulation.

Onion juice can be mixed together with other hair care oils or products including honey, coconut oil or olive oil.

3. Fenugreek/Methi

Fenugreek is an herb that is mostly grown in North America, Egypt, India and the Middle East. The Fenugreek plant contains tiny brown seeds which are the ones that are commonly used for hair care.

Fenugreek or Methi seeds are mostly known for their culinary and medicinal elements. However, research indicates that Fenugreek has a positive effect on hair growth. This herb has been used for decades as a natural hair remedy for conditions such as hair loss, itchy scalp, hair thinning and dry scalp. Fenugreek seeds come fully packed with nutrients which help in promoting hair growth.

Fenugreek seeds/powder can help in promoting a healthy scalp because if it’s anti-inflammatory properties. Fenugreek seeds are classified as one of the best anti-inflammatory foods. (4)

4. Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay is known for its healing properties hence popularly known as ‘The Healing Clay’. When it comes to hair, this clay also has numerous benefits. It has a moisturizing effect and can be used to draw out excess oil and dirt from the hair.

It is particularly helpful on a dry scalp, or damaged hair. Additionally, bentonite clay can be used to reduce frizz in hair. It also has a lustrous effect on hair.

Bentonite clay is especially good for low porosity hair because it contains negatively charged ions which get attracted to the positive ions present in low porosity hair. This therefore means the excess positive ions will be neutralized and balanced off hence reducing frizz.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

Popularly used for the no-poo method (washing hair without shampoo), Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is a great addition to your collection of natural hair growth remedies.

ACV contains acetic acid. It therefore helps to lower hair PH and will leave your alkaline dull, brittle hair healthy and more balanced.

Apple Cider Vinegar is rich in nutrients such as vitamins and minerals which contribute to the overall health of the hair.

6. Aloe Vera

Who would have thought that smearing your entire head with honey will be beneficial to hair! I certainly did not, but this was before I was all over natural hair growt discovered that honey is an effective addition to hair. I am here to tell you that, you don’t have to limit honey to sweetening food!

From adding it to your shampoo, conditioner or even just making a nourishing mask, you can use this sweet, sticky substance to achieve your hair goals.

There are several ways to use eggs to nourish your hair. The most popular way to use eggs is to make conditioning masks using eggs as a key ingredient.

9. Lemon for Cleansing Hair

Lemon juice contains vitamin C a nutrient that helps to strengthen hair. Lemon juice is also effective in stimulating hair growth and reverting hair loss.

Lemon juice can be used as hair rinse to provide the shimmery look or can be mixed with an essential oil for direct application into the scalp. Research has found lemon juice effective in dealing with dandruff. (5)

12. Pre-pooing Natural Hair

Pre-pooing is the process of applying an oil treatment or a conditioner to your hair before shampooing the hair. It therefore plays a role in giving your hair an extract layer of protection to avoid over stripping moisture from the hair.

For this reasons, it is a good practice to include pre-pooing hair as one of the hair remedies. You can use oils such as Olive Oil, Castor Oil or DIY treatments to pre-poo your hair.
