If you’re thinking to yourself, “Oh, I’m sure there’s a specific shampoo I should seek for that contains rice or rice water,” think again. This custom, which one TikTok user claims originated with the Yao ladies of Huangluo, an ancient Chinese village, boils down to exactly what it sounds like: people wash their hair in the water left over after soaking rice. Because a large bag of rice can be purchased for a few dollars at any grocery store, the beauty secret is fortunately incredibly accessible and cost-effective for everyone!

Is this rice water method, however, effective in thickening and lengthening your hair? Women’s Health reached out to Kavita Mariwalla, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and the founder of Mariwalla Dermatology, to see if the claims that it can speed up hair growth were true. Continue reading to learn if there are any substantial hair benefits to this method, as well as how to go about washing with rice water.

What are the advantages of rice water?

Rice water contains vitamins, minerals, and the hormone inositol, which can make your hair smoother, thicker, less knotty, and longer, according to Dr. Mariwalla. “The B vitamins and vitamin E, in theory, can help protect hair from oxidation and aging.”

While there is no definite scientific evidence, Dr. Mariwalla adds that hair can feel smoother because the rice starches rest on the hair shafts and act as a covering. Is it possible to encourage lightning-fast hair growth using it? No, most likely. However, the vitamins, when combined with the starchy coating, can add luster and strengthen hair.

How do you use rice water to wash your hair?
Now, let’s get down to business. To begin, gather one to one and a half cups of uncooked rice, a large mixing basin, a strainer, and an empty spray or shampoo bottle, according to Dr. Mariwalla.

Place your preferred rice in a sieve and give it a thorough rinse to remove any contaminants. The water should be completely clear. You’ll also see footage of people straining the rice after it’s been placed in a bowl with water.
Stir the rice and one or one and a half cups of water (to match your serving of rice) together in a basin or jar. On TikTok, you’ll see people putting it in a jar and shaking it, which also works. Before covering the jar or bowl with a lid, ensure sure the water has a milky appearance.
Allow the rice mixture to settle for at least 24 hours.
For the easiest application, pour the rice water into a clean spray or shampoo container. Dr. Mariwalla suggests taking this step after shampooing your hair in the shower. Apply a substantial amount of rice water to your hair, ensuring that your scalp is well covered and combed through.
Allow it to sit for about 20 minutes. Imagine it as a hair mask!
Rinse the rice water out of your hair thoroughly.
Are there any negative consequences?
Although there are no long-term hazards, rice water might cause residue to build up, making hair look dull. Dr. Mariwalla recommends just administering this treatment once a week to avoid potential residue buildup. It’s the ideal approach to give your strands a little TLC on a regular basis.

Make rice water your last resort if you’re experiencing hair loss.
First, get advice from a specialist. “There are no negative side effects to your hair,” Dr. Mariwalla explains, “but if your major worry is hair loss, you should visit with your dermatologist for therapy rather than trying at-home therapies.”
