I mean, who doesn’t dream of long natural hair that can be styled in a ponytail, a bun, or simply down?

On the other hand, thinking of our lifestyles, dirt, and pollution, our long hair goals often seem unattainable.

How To Get Instant Hair Growth With Castor Oil

While castor oil or Ricinus communis is well-known for its amazing health benefits and has been in use for centuries across industries, its benefits for our natural hair often go unnoticed.

The majority of its nutritional content is made up of ricinoleic acid, omega-6 and 9 fatty acids, vitamin E, and minerals

Castor oil is an age-old beauty treatment that has been largely replaced over time by fancier beauty creams and products with more ingredients and a bigger price tag.

Castor oil has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties and is high in vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and omega-6 and -9 beneficial fatty acids. Its unusually high ricinoleic acid ratio makes it beneficial to your skin and natural hair.

To cut it short, castor oil has traditionally been used topically for acne and other skin conditions, as well as hair loss, rashes, and more.

What Does Castor Oil Do for Your Natural Hair?

Castor oil can be used on the scalp to help prevent and remedy hair loss and it is effective at this for several reasons.

There are three types of castor oil that are popularly used for our hair care – organic castor oil, Jamaican black castor oil, and hydrogenated castor oil. While the castor seeds are originally from Africa, they made their way to Jamaica due to the slave trade.

Let’s have a look at the Organic/Cold Pressed Castor Oil

• Extracted directly from the castor seed with no heat involved
• Uses a mechanical and non-chemical method called expeller pressing
• The cold pressing ensures there is no degradation of any of the nutrients present in the seed
• It is pale yellow in color
• If you have curly hair and an itchy or dry scalp that is prone to irritation, it is recommended that you use unrefined, hexane-free organic castor oil as it is less alkaline than JBCO.

My fave, the Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO)

• Initially roasted and then pressed for oil
• The ashes of the roasted castor seeds are added to the oil, which gives it its black color
• If you have straight hair and a healthy scalp, you are more likely to benefit from JBCO, which is better at penetrating and cleansing

Hydrogenated Castor Oil (Castor Wax)

• Made by hydrogenating pure castor oil with the help of a nickel catalyst
• Unlike regular castor oil, castor wax is brittle, odorless, and insoluble in water
• Mainly used in cosmetics, varnishes, and polishes

Remember: While the nutritional value of both JBCO and organic castor oil is about the same, JBCO is more alkaline, making it a more clarifying oil that can help open cuticles.

How to Use Castor Oil Treatments on Your Curly Hair

Castor oil can be very beneficial for hair growth if used correctly. Small amounts of plain oil can be used for an all-over treatment. Like many things in life, more is not always better, and only a few drops are needed per treatment. The additional oils are completely optional.

How Often Should You use Castor Oil on Your Hair?

You can use castor oil 1-2 times per week. It can be used more often, though you may not see any increased results with using it daily.

When to Use Castor Oil?

This treatment works better on damp but not wet hair. You can keep a spray bottle of water in the bathroom and just spritz your roots before applying.

For maximum benefit, leave the treatment on for several hours or overnight. After applying, use a shower cap or towel to avoid getting the oil on furniture or a pillow.

How to Remove the Oil

Removing the castor oil can be difficult, especially with natural shampoos. I’ve found that using a small amount and leaving it on overnight will result in most of the oil-absorbing into your hair and scalp and make cleanup easier.

In fact, I’ve been able to use dry shampoo and not wash on a few occasions. When You do shampoo, try to use a natural shampoo or mud shampoo as normal.

An alternate method to try is to crack an egg and whisk until smooth and then massage the egg into the scalp. This helps break down the oil and adds additional nutrients to your natural hair. It is messy though, so I’d recommend doing this in the shower.

Castor Oil Treatment For Hair Regrowth

We know that castor oil is an amazing ingredient to treat hair loss and to boost hair growth. But, its dense structure and distinctive smell might not appeal to some. In this case, you can combine castor oil with other beneficial oils to create a hair oil solution that is more to your liking.

The following potion is a combination of four oils – coconut, sweet almond, sesame, and castor. While you can add or remove oils depending on availability and preference, there is nothing like using all four of these together.

What You Will Need

• 2 tablespoons extra virgin coconut oil
• 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil
• 2 tablespoons sesame oil
• 1 tablespoon castor oil

How to get started

1. Mix the four oils and massage the mixture into your scalp and from the roots to the tips of your hair. You could warm the oil a little for quicker penetration.
2. Keep it on for a minimum of 60 minutes. Optionally, you could leave it in overnight for better results.
3. Shampoo your hair to wash it off.

This oil is perfect to induce natural hair growth. You can make it in large quantities and store it by adding a capsule of vitamin E oil to it to increase its shelf life.
