The famous Denman brush for 4c hair, does it even work? That’s one of the questions I had when I first saw it and my hair is on the 4 range! So, gurl, I feel ya!

Did you know that our hair type tends to break or split when you run a brush through them? The Denman Brush is a very popular detangling tool among the natural hair community because it is used mainly to detangle natural hair Types like 3c and Type 4 hair when wet (that’s best!).

❤️ Sis, Before we continue, below are some helpful posts that will help you (you can check them out them later!✌️):

I dislike tangles but I know I need to get through the tangles, but it can be a challenge when almost any brush results in puff frizz mess.

Then I went for the finger coming method (You can also say finger detangling) and by that way, you are avoiding the brush altogether plus it’s safer.

But let’s be real, your hair won’t be like 10000% detanled, right? Now, thanks to Denman brushes I feel you can rest your fingers and start using a brush again because you are confident that this brush was made for your hair type as well in mind!

BUT HOLD, ON!  Which one will work for you? You might be overwhelmed when you see the varieties available online or in your local beauty supply store.

This brush is known among us naturals for helping you cut down time during your detangling session plus it also works to evenly distribute the product into your curly natural hair.

If you are also aiming for definition this brush helps achieve curl definition.

But holllldddd onnnn sis, since not everything works for everyone trying it will let you know if it works or not for your hair. Some women find that the brush pulls out too much hair and can even end up with frizzy hair.

I checked and the Denman has a higher price point than other brushes, ranging between the $10-$19 (I found the smaller in size for $8 here, one with wide pins for $13 here, and the classic for $9 here!!!).

denman brush for 4c hair: So is a Denman Brush better than a regular brush?

To answer that question, it depends on your detangling preference.

If your main focus is on curl definition and decreasing your detangling time, then a denman brush for 4c hair (and not only) may be the right thing for you.

I think it’s best to purchase a Denman brush that uses 5-7 rows of bristles but there is a variety of Denman Brushes to choose from!

One thing that I have noticed when it comes to trying new stuff, don’t be afrad if it doesnt live up to your expectations.

If the brush snags your hair don’t be discouraged on the first try, you may then need to modify the brush (check the video below, excellent for this option) to suit your hair curls.

Just like many other naturals you can remove every other row of bristles to create what is known as a “modified Denman.” Also, be sure to use the brush slowly to avoid unnecessary hair pulling (so don’t be in a rush when doing your hair!).

Detangling time? These are some must-have to help you!

Whether you pick your fingers or a Denman brush it’s essential to use a conditioner with “slip”.

Using such conditioner will allow the tool or your fingers to easily slide through your hair.

When detangling, it’s best to start from the end of your hair and slowly work your way to the root. I love to create sections and twist my detangled hair as I go to avoid feeling overwhelmed plus it helps me stay organized and know which sections are detangled (give it a try!).

As I mentioned earlier, take your time while detangling your hair. I know you might not have time, I don’t always but try to schedule your detangling session on a day when you’re not in a rush.

I’ve come to notice that rushing this process can cause hair breakage and no one likes setbacks!

So what are the types of denman brush for 4c hair or any type 4 hair? Which one should you go for first?

The Classic Denman Styling Brush

The Classic Denman Styling brush is the most commonly used brushes for styling and detangling.

I love that its bristles are nylon and are set in a “pin” style (meaning they have some space between them). It’s bristles sit on a half-rubber shaped pad, which I believe is great for smoothing your hair.

This Denman Brush comes in small, medium, large, and heavyweight and you can check them over here.

What to Pick? Pick the Classic Styling Denman Brush for Curly Natural Hair

If you have curly natural hair, you want to go for the classic styling brush. Here are some things that make it stand out from the other ones:

  • Narrow Base: Allows narrow exposure to focus on each curl section for clumps.
  • Rubber Padding: Prevents static, unlike plastic brushes that cause frizz!
  • Nylon Teeth: Vegan, flexible, and designed to be gentle on both tangled and detangled hair.
  • Adjustable bristles: Make changes to suit your style and curl pattern preference.

Now that you know which one to pick, here are some helpful tips that will help you when it comes to picking and using a Denman brush!

Detangle using your Denman brush and some product!

Since your curls are fragile you should never brush dry curly hair because brushing and tugging dry hair can cause breakage.

Best way to go about it is to apply your favorite leave-in conditioner (hope it has some slip) or curl cream.

If you are aiming for curl definition you should try to detangle with your fingers first and then use the Denman brush if you have like mid-length natural hair but be aware of product build up so don’t over do it or allow it to touch your scalp!

Even That Product Distribution sis

Anytime you are using a Denman brush with your favourite conditioner always try to spread the product properly all over your curly hair.

Denman for styling, but before gel

From what I’ve seen Denman-brushing with a gel can cause frizz so what you can do is

  • to detangle with your leave-in conditioner first,
  • next, graze your curl cream over and then
  • use the Denman to enable your desired curl pattern.

Once the curl clumps are formed, lock them with your gel of choice.

How to Use the Denman Brush for some great definition the Right Way in simple English steps 🙂

  • Start by applying your leave-in
  • Try some finger detangling
  • Next, go for your curl cream
  • Divide your hair into sections.
  • Start to move your Denman gently from mid-length.
  • Start Shaking the brushed section to encourage clumps.
  • Gel time! Lock and seal the curl clumps with gel, do the praying hands method.
  • For best results you should air dry for 1-2 hours (yikes!); You can always apply little gel again and diffuse dry your hair.

From where and how much did I buy it for?

You can find it at your local beauty supply store but If you’re leaving in a country that doesn’t really have items and products for natural hair you should try getting it from here for $9 and they ship worldwide so still do a search on the website!

Is Your Denman Brush Fake? Here is how to tell

  • The base will be bright orange (say what?!), instead of the original salmon orange colour.
  • The bristles will feel hard like plastic (no way!!), instead of the soft nylon teeth.
  • The handle will be dark brown (hmmm!!), instead of the original jet black colour.
